  • Sturdy and Efficient Wine Degasser Attachment Sturdy and Efficient Wine Degasser Attachment
This Wyckoff degasser is exactly what I needed for home brewing. The SUS316 stainless steel construction feels very solid and durable, and it attaches easily to any standard drill. Using it makes degassing wine, mead, or beer much faster and more thorough compared to doing it by hand. I really like the different mixing components, the stirrer, mixer rod, and paddle, they all work as advertised and handle different batches well. It’s also easy to clean after use, which is a big plus. Overall, this is a high-quality, well-made degasser that saves a lot of time and effort for home brewers. Worth the investment if you’re serious about your craft beverages. ... show more

  • Seems like a nice idea but way too violent and oxidative at least for 1 gallon
I had high hopes for this wine degasser drill attachment. In the past I have used a wine saver pump to degass my brews, which (so far) are 1 gallon or smaller. Normally the pump is used to put left-over wine under vacuum, in its bottle, to keep oxygen out so it will last longer. For my use, the vacuum pulls dissolved fermentation gasses out of solution; but then I have to release the vacuum, which draws air (and oxygen) into the container. Half the reason you use an airlock when brewing is to avoid oxygenating the brew, so this definitely not ideal (but was cheap). I do not currently have any brews waiting or upcoming for degassing so I tested with water. The results are sadly disappointing, as you can see in my videos. This degasser is designed to have the little wings fling out from centrifugal force, but they typically don't under the max speed of my drill. Even under this speed, without the wings opening up, in a 1 gallon container it is enough to create a vortex deep enough to mix tons of air into your brew. I can probably avoid this by going slower, but the wings already don't open as it is. I can get the wings to open up if I pulse the drill, but the result is violent agitation that is far worse than the whirlpool, so *not* having them open is actually better, but contrary to how the degasser is designed to function (if you're not going to have the hinged wings swing out, there is no reason to have wings, hinged or otherwise). I don't have any brew containers larger than 1 gallon, so I did not test with anything larger. I will grant that with a 5 or 6 gallon carboy the wings may be deep enough that vortices and agitation won't be enough to draw the surface down and agitate air into your brew, especially if you are careful and use only short pulses and let the brew settle before trying again. But as it is advertised to be for 1 to 6 gallon brews, and all I currently do are 1 gallon, I think with my results I sadly would be better off with a simple degassing whip (manual or drill). ... show more
