  • Great beginners kit for brewing mead.
Style: Mead Making Kit
This kit is great fun if you wanted to learn to make mead. The instructions are easy to follow and the online resources are vast. My first mead, aged for 2 months, came out great. I backsweetened with Splenda so it was a great, low carb, after work treat. Worth the price as you can reuse all hardware and buy replacement kit of yeast, nutrients and sanitizer. I'm currently making a cyser now, mead and hard cider mix. Only thing I would purchase is an auto-siphon. I found that made bottling easier. ... show more

  • HUGE SUCCESS! FUN! GREAT FOR PARTY
Style: Mead Making Kit
This was my first time ever making anything remotely close to a fermented anything. I was very confused but the guide and video I watched online made it super easy to make. Reminded me when I learned how to make mozzarella. I started about over a month ago and aged mine for a total of 42 days. The recipe calls for 30 days but I had a party with some friends and let it age for longer. My biggest advice is be very cautious when doing the day 2 and day 5 steps. I accidentally added way too much day 2 packet and it bubbled over and caused a huge mess. They don't give instructions for calculating ABV, so pick up a hygrometer and get the starting measurement on day 1 and a final measurement on your bottling day to calculate the ABV. They also don't teach you how to siphon and provide a tube and staw and expect you to look online how to siphon. I recommend instead buying a separate siphon online that has a pump attached for easy and clean bottling. The taste: While I was expecting for this to taste super sweet and rich. It was quite the opposite. The yeast had eaten all of the sugars and thus produced a sour and bitter wine. The smell was of a rich beer and very pleasing. I think I loved the smell the most. It's not carbonated and it sat well in the gut. However after drinking a whole bottle I certainly was all giggles and hiccuping a lot. I felt like I was in a Tom and Jerry cartoon after they drink the wine. Could I drink a whole bottle again? No. But a small glass goes tremendously well with a well equipped meal. My friends also certainly approved of the final product. Except for a few who don't particularly enjoy fermented beverages. My ideas for next time is to do more research on different flavors. Adding things like orange peels or strawberries might spruce up this lovely drink. Final note: Watching videos online and doing research about making mead and it's history was certainly eye opening and very helpful. Remember to stay clean and sanitary for success! ... show more

Solid little kit! It is simple and straightforward. Got my first mead bubbling away. I’m also glad at how fast it got to me considering I live abroad. Cheers guys!

  • Good starter kit - Instructions seem fun but overwrought
Style: Mead Making Kit
Just to be upfront: my first batch sucked - horribly - and I did follow the instructions. My second is great though. But I used different instructions for it (found on brighthelm dot org) that were much less interactive. The only thing I bought for my second try was more sanitizer, more yeast, an auto siphon (about $15), and a large stock pot ($15 from Wal-Mart if you don't already have one in the kitchen). I would suggest adding the yeast and sanitizer for a 2nd batch to the kit for ease of use. Here's what I think someone should be aware of to make this a much better experience: - The internet is rife with how to guides on this topic, if you're ever in doubt or want to make it better - An auto siphon will make your life easier, but not dramatically - When the 4 weeks are up, it may not be done fermenting yet (my first batch failed here) - You can use a sanitized 1 gallon pitcher to hold your brew while you clean/sanitize the demijohn, before placing it back to see if it carries on fermenting after the first 4 weeks - Retail honeys can taste funny and/or bad - but there are ways to fix that, before you start the fermentation ... show more

  • Good buy
Style: Mead Making Kit
I failed my first time since I didn’t keep it in the recommended temperature, but this was a very good purchase for trying it out. Better yet, the kit allows you to retry as many times as you’d like. The instructions were clear and I felt it was a great value for my money.

  • Arrived damaged or I'd have given it 5 stars (See Update)
Style: Mead Making Kit
The instructions are well written and easy to understand and it comes with everything you need. I saw a video that recommended this kit for beginners and I'm impressed with the quality. The only negative was that the airlock arrived with a crack. It still holds water but I was hoping to get multiple uses out of this kit. UPDATE: Kyle, the founder of Craft a Brew reached out to me directly and asked if I was the person who gave the review about the cracked airlock because he could only see the first name on the review. When I said I was, he apologized and promptly shipped me a replacement. I can't say enough about this outstanding customer service! To track me down and offer a replacement was above and beyond. Most sellers would have been happy with the 4 star review but Kyle went out of the way to provide 5 star service and earned a life long customer in the process ... show more
