  • Great beginners kit for brewing mead.
Style: Mead Making Kit
This kit is great fun if you wanted to learn to make mead. The instructions are easy to follow and the online resources are vast. My first mead, aged for 2 months, came out great. I backsweetened with Splenda so it was a great, low carb, after work treat. Worth the price as you can reuse all hardware and buy replacement kit of yeast, nutrients and sanitizer. I'm currently making a cyser now, mead and hard cider mix. Only thing I would purchase is an auto-siphon. I found that made bottling easier. ... show more

  • HUGE SUCCESS! FUN! GREAT FOR PARTY
Style: Mead Making Kit
This was my first time ever making anything remotely close to a fermented anything. I was very confused but the guide and video I watched online made it super easy to make. Reminded me when I learned how to make mozzarella. I started about over a month ago and aged mine for a total of 42 days. The recipe calls for 30 days but I had a party with some friends and let it age for longer. My biggest advice is be very cautious when doing the day 2 and day 5 steps. I accidentally added way too much day 2 packet and it bubbled over and caused a huge mess. They don't give instructions for calculating ABV, so pick up a hygrometer and get the starting measurement on day 1 and a final measurement on your bottling day to calculate the ABV. They also don't teach you how to siphon and provide a tube and staw and expect you to look online how to siphon. I recommend instead buying a separate siphon online that has a pump attached for easy and clean bottling. The taste: While I was expecting for this to taste super sweet and rich. It was quite the opposite. The yeast had eaten all of the sugars and thus produced a sour and bitter wine. The smell was of a rich beer and very pleasing. I think I loved the smell the most. It's not carbonated and it sat well in the gut. However after drinking a whole bottle I certainly was all giggles and hiccuping a lot. I felt like I was in a Tom and Jerry cartoon after they drink the wine. Could I drink a whole bottle again? No. But a small glass goes tremendously well with a well equipped meal. My friends also certainly approved of the final product. Except for a few who don't particularly enjoy fermented beverages. My ideas for next time is to do more research on different flavors. Adding things like orange peels or strawberries might spruce up this lovely drink. Final note: Watching videos online and doing research about making mead and it's history was certainly eye opening and very helpful. Remember to stay clean and sanitary for success! ... show more

  • First-Time Mead Brewer Approved!
Style: Mead Making Kit Deluxe
This was my first journey into the world of mead-making, and Craft a Brew’s Deluxe Mead Kit made it feel like I was forging something legendary. The instructions were clear, the materials solid, and everything arrived safely except for a small crack in the auto-siphon cane. I contacted Craft a Brew and they replied quickly, proving they honor their customers like any good clan should. I also appreciated that the company supports clean water initiatives — a noble cause worthy of a toast. My first batch has already begun to stir and come alive, and I’m excited to see how it turns out. Craft a Brew has definitely earned a lifelong customer… inmead. (Yes, that pun was absolutely intended.) Skål. ... show more

  • Great for beginners, even better with some adjustments.
Style: Mead Making Kit
Craft-A-Brew’s Mead Making Kit is a DIY kit for making mead in a one-gallon carboy container. It contains everything needed to make mead, except for the honey required for fermentation. Because it includes reusable components and a guide for continuing to brew after the included ingredients are used, it’s meant to be an affordable entry into homebrewing as a hobby, retailing at $49.95. Having more knowledge about homebrewing now than when I started using this exact kit, I can safely say that it is useful for getting started but does not include everything you might need and could be improved with a few tweaks. My criteria for this evaluation are price, quality of components, and usability. Starting with price, the kit is relatively affordable at $49.95 and comes with a one-gallon glass carboy, two packets of nutrients, sanitizer, a racking cane, an airlock, and yeast. However, buying all these components separately can be cheaper and may total under $50. An argument could be made that the included guide to making mead justifies the cost, especially for beginners. The quality of the components is generally very good. I have since purchased carboys from other companies, but I still prefer the one included in this kit. The yeast and nutrients made a very tasty batch of mead, and the racking cane has held up well after several months. The only issue I had with quality was that the included airlock was made of cheap plastic and broke the first time I tried to insert it into the bung. I had to improvise a blowoff tube into a bowl of sanitizer to save my batch, which meant I also had to purchase more sanitizer and a new airlock. As for usability, this is where the kit falls a bit short. For beginners, the included racking cane is not ideal, as the manual siphoning process can be tricky to get right on the first attempt. I would have preferred an auto siphon, which is easy to find on Amazon for a low price. Additionally, I think the guide should include instructions for setting up a blowoff tube, as mead can get very foamy during the first few days of fermentation, and foam getting into the airlock can cause a mess. A blowoff tube would solve this issue. Finally, the yeast nutrient was clumpy and difficult to remove from the packet, even though the guide emphasizes the importance of adding it carefully. Overall, I think this is a very good product that, with some minor improvements like a better airlock and an auto siphon, could be well worth the price for new homebrew enthusiasts. I give the product 4 out of 5 stars and would absolutely recommend it to someone who is curious about the hobby but not yet fully committed. ... show more

  • Good buy
Style: Mead Making Kit
I failed my first time since I didn’t keep it in the recommended temperature, but this was a very good purchase for trying it out. Better yet, the kit allows you to retry as many times as you’d like. The instructions were clear and I felt it was a great value for my money.
