  • Works ok out of box in upper bands, must tune if you want low bands.
Out of the box (with a solid ground plane), assembling with the tip as short as it will go got me “OK” results on 2M and 70CM. 6M not great. Was even able to get some decent results with no ground plane, but much higher SWR. After trimming about 40mm off the tip, I was able to shorten it far enough to get balanced performance across all 4 advertised bands, plus “useable” in 1.25M, but not great. If you don’t have access to a good tuner, you can probably get darn near similar results by having the tip out 19.5mm as measured from base of ball to top of clamp. Do not even bother trying to use this outside of 2M/70CM if you don’t have a perfect ground plane first. Update #1: Folds over driving on freeway. Might be the bounce of the truck bed, might be wind loading, I don’t know. Going to retire it after 1 day and it will go on top of the travel trailer and transported stowed. Will be trying the Comet UHV-4, which has a locking threaded ring to prevent unplanned folding. ... show more

  • Good antenna but
What I liked the antenna SWR’s out the box were 1.5/1 and has great reception. What I don’t like and this is my fault I have a 99 dodge pickup and I mounted it on the roof. The first time I hit a low hanging branch it came apart at the top coil instead of what others complain about “the antenna lays down “ no problem I had bought anouther for out at my hunt camp I will put on my truck and try again. Oh by the way replace the cheap set screws as they strip out or back out. Use red loctite ... show more

  • Does not come close to specs
I purchased the HH-9000 quad band mobile antenna to use with a new TYT TH-9800 quad band radio as it was advertised to be used with that radio. ISSUES: 1. No instruction manual is included. 2. It arrived missing one of the 2 set screws on the base section. 3. Over the past 3 weeks, using a NanoVNA with 101 data points, I have attempted to fine tune the antenna for resonance across the various bands and to tune for the lowest SWR. Specs call for SWR below 1.5:1, however: adjusting the various segments from the maximum to the minimum lengths possible, the best readings I had were: 420M-450M: inconsistent, and affected by tuning attempts on the lower bands; 144-148M: SWR went from 3.2 to 1.69 to 4.6 across the band; 50-54M: was not resonant, and was over 9 until I removed the top segment - then SWR dropped to 4.3 to 5.6 (but impedance varied from 32 ohm to 118 ohm across the band, with no frequency segment matching close to 50 ohm); 28-29.78M: best SWR was 3.7 to 5.6 across the band, and both SWR and impedance were greatly affected by coax movement within the vehicle. Measurements made on a stationary vehicle. I have not taken this mobile so I cannot address the reports of a weak fold-over spring causing the antenna to fold over while driving at highway speeds BOTTOM LINE: I don't recommend this product - invest in a higher quality antenna from Comet or Diamond. • A good core to build your multi band antenna
This is a good antenna, not a great antenna. It does not have a ground plain, a mounting bracket, or cable. This antenna is a project antenna and not complete. It is a very solid and good performing antenna. You just have to make a ground plain, a magnet mount, or a mounting bracket. You will also have to get quality coaxial cable like RG-8, RG-8m, RG-8x, or something equivalent or better. Build your antenna system with this as the core. You will not regret it. It is a great start. A lot of people complain of a high standing wave. Though, this was not my situation, the standing wave ratio was a bit high for my liking. That being said, all antennas are made in a way that they are not perfect for your application. You must tune every antenna you ever get. I tuned the individual segments to get the standing wave ratio below 1.5 on all bands. If you do not know how to tune an antenna, perhaps you should pay to have someone install an antenna for you. This antenna is a good core to start with. You will have to tune it, add a ground plane, get a bracket or mount, and add coaxial cable. If you do not want to pay someone to tune your antenna and you do not know how to do so, carefully take your transceiver and clean all dust and fingerprints off it. Disconnect the power supply, microphone, and meters attached to the transceiver. Look for the original packaging and box and very carefully place the transceiver, microphone, cords, and manual back in the box. Wrap the transceiver in the plastic it came in as well. Using clear tape, close the box to seal it. Look for the original receipt and return to place of purchase. Then exchange the transceiver for a walkie talkie with an antenna already on it. As a bonus, repackage the antenna, coaxial cable, and power supply in their original boxes and return them to the original vendor. You will have lots of money left over and still have a perfectly good walkie talkie for your needs. ... show more

  • Not an antenna for driving you put it up when you're stopped, Or moving slow
Not an antenna for driving!! you put it up when you're stopped, Or moving slow!! I get the best SWR match on all channels with this antenna and then a matter of fact the needle doesn't even move when checking SWR. People who are writing these reviews are Not using this antenna as it should be used, But then complain about how the antenna performs, if it is used in the way it's intended there's no problems with it. And for some of the other reviews, Please don't follow their examples, one Review actually put it on upside down and complained it didn't work right? Use this antenna as intended and it's an awesome antenna ... show more

  • Folds over too easily; center load falls apart
Spring holding foldover portion is way too weak and lacks additional retainer. Driving at 40mph was enough to fold it over on the 1st one (returned); 2nd one did well until 70mph; had to fasten it down myself to keep it from scooting up and slamming over. Separately, over less than a year's driving, the plastic cover housing the center load fell apart (not from being whacked -- through normal driving the plastic let the threads strip & slip, then sideways pressure cracked it) and now it's trash. ... show more
