    • The best GoPro I've owned yet - still suffers poor power options
Yes, it's better than any cheap knockoff, and yes, it's better than the GoPro 4 and 7 I've owned. Shallow waterproof by default without a housing is super nice, but it also means investing in lens protectors. I still feel GoPro's batteries don't last as long as they should for their size - maybe it's a density vs weight decision they've made, but it feels it's absolutely necessary to carry a minimum of 3 batteries for a day-trip, so invest in those accessories! (I also haven't seen a higher capacity battery option for this model, yet, either, so maybe down the road?) Also, still trying to understand why they insist on putting the charge port inside the battery compartment (instead of behind a rubber grommet like so many other electronics), so you have to have the side of the camera open to the world if you want to set this up with an external power source (in vehicle or powered tripod setup, for instance). But at least it's USB C now! But you're not here for my nitpicking quality of life concerns. You want to know about the quality and features. As with past GoPro models, they continue to push the industry forward with their tech - always 6-12 months ahead of what the cheaper knockoffs are capable of, and with an interface and software that is best in class. Total control of the camera from a smartphone and/or your voice - everything works like it should. The variety of video modes is excellent (I really like the 4K/30 Cinematic mode) and quick access to 240fps slow-mo shots is awesome. I've only had it for a couple weeks with a couple day-trips under the belt, and it's definitely my favorite GoPro yet, but we'll see how well it wears over time. Cable came quickly and the installation was fairly straight forward. I used a 1-1/8" (29 mm) hole saw (shown in attached picture) to create a hole for the receptacle end of the cable. This allows it to have a snug and flush fit. Such a tight hole may not have allowed for the cover which was supplied with the cable, however, I didn't intend to use the cover. The cable was supplied with two nuts, both of which were quite tight when threading onto the receptacle end of the cable. I used some lubricant but it didn't help too much. While I was able to get the nut tightened, it was not as easy as it should have been. This lost the cable 1/2 star. My main issue with the cable is that it has a significant voltage drop and this causes me to drop the rating another whole star. To test the voltage drop I first place my USB DMM on an Anker 4-port USB car power supply (AK-A2240011) Anker Quick Charge 3.0 & USB Type-C 54W 4-Port USB Car Charger, PowerDrive+ 4 for Galaxy S7/S6/Edge/Plus, Note 5/4 and PowerIQ for iPhone 7/6s/Plus, iPad Pro/Air 2/mini, LG, Nexus, HTC and More . This thing, BTW, *rocks*. The power supply easily supplied 1.00A at 5.12V as shown in the attached photo. I then plugged the male end of the USB cable into the same Anker power supply and put the DMM into the receptacle of the cable. I found that drawing the same 1.00A the voltage was down to 4.55V. That's a drop of 0.57V! Now this cable doesn't purport to conform to the USB 3.0 standard (it actually doesn't say what standard it's built to as far as I can see), so perhaps I'm expecting too much. Assuming it's a USB 2.0 cable it should be able to deliver 0.5A without a problem, and I've got some similar 6' USB 2.0 cables which don't seem to have a problem supplying 1.00A with a minimal voltage drop. Therefore I'd like to see significantly less than a 0.5V drop with this cable at 1.00A. As I don't expect to use the USB portion of this cable too frequently, and the audio jack does work fine, I've rounded my overall score up to 4-stars. ... show more

    • Quirky little thing
I like it but I also expected it to work with no problems since its a 400$ camera. First issue: Sometimes it won't turn on, even if battery is charged. Have to re-insert battery to fix this issue. Second issue: I thought it wouldn't turn on because the battery died but it kept recording even though there was no indication of it. I realized this after i viewed my footage. Additionally, if its off and you press record, it should turn on and start recording, sometimes this button does not work until you turn the GoPro on first. Third issue: Battery life is less than 2 hours. For everyone who's battery does not come close to 2hrs, make sure the GoPro Wireless connection is OFF when you're not using it, you're welcome. (btw the more features/boosts that are active, the less battery life you will have) Fourth Issue: Pairing the GoPro phone app to the camera is easy but it doesn't always connect when you ask it to. Either takes multiple tries or gotta cycle power on the camera (re-insert battery) Overall I like the camera from a basic point of use. I mounted it to my helmet mount but have yet to play with editing. The GoPro app seems legit for viewing and snipping. One sweet feature is the live stream to your phone whatever the camera see's (probably limited to wirelessBT range) I hope to see firmware updates in the future to fix the issues I've experienced so far. ... show more
