I recently moved into an apartment in the heart of my city and I love it, but this being the heart *and* the entertainment district, it's...lively. Thumping club music, loud drunk tourists, revving cars, you name it. I'm also down the road from a busy fire station. And across the street there's daily construction on a skyscraper and even though I'm quite high up, well, so is the construction. I can handle city noise, but I also work from home and sometimes I need peace and quiet to focus. As anyone who's worn earplugs knows, you can only wear them so much before your ears physically can't take it anymore. So I went in search of the best noise cancelling headphones I could find and came across these. I didn't even hesitate before throwing down the $350, desperate for relief. I was optimistic but wasn't sure that they would be able to cope with all the loud, abrupt noises of my environment. These headphones have blown my expectations out of the water. I'm writing this review as they're pouring concrete at the construction site (for those who don't know, it sounds like a cannon going off every 30 seconds) and I can't. Hear. Anything. Construction crews hammering away at metal poles? Barely hear it. Sirens on the street below me? Barely hear it. Loud party music? Can't hear it. And that's without playing any music, just having the headphones on in silence. If I play any music at all the environmental noise is 100% gone. In my case I find the noise cancelling power of these headphones easily worth the full MSRP. But the rest of the features are fantastic too. The sound quality is solid; I'm not an audiophile though and don't have much to compare it too so I won't comment any more on that. The battery life is phenomenal. I use these for hours every day and have to charge them maybe once a week, and they charge very fast. They're very comfortable to wear and can easily stay on for hours. The smartphone app that controls these headphones (which you'll need, I'll get to that in a minute) lets you select from a number of profiles, including custom ones, which make these great for listening to different genres. The app also lets you control the aggressiveness of the active noise cancellation; I usually leave it on max (for obvious reasons) but when it's quieter I like to let in more ambient noise. The headphones also let you pair to two different devices simultaneously which is extremely useful while working. I have these paired to my work computer and phone, so I can listen to music and take calls on my phone, while also being able to hop onto calls at work the very next second. Incredibly convenient. Also convenient is the long range on these headphones; I can leave my computer and phone on one end of my 1000+ sqft apartment and walk to the other and still be connected. Another convenience is that you don't have to pause music when you need to take these off. Just take them off and they pause whatever you're listening to. Put them back on and it starts right back off from where you stopped. That said, this can be annoying when I just need to itch my ear and the pause kicks in, causing my work computer to open up its music app. Worth it though. A couple of other small negatives are that the built in touch controls on the headphone are awful and unintuitive, so as I mentioned above you absolutely need the smartphone app. And having these on, even if I'm not playing anything, drains my phone's battery much faster than normal (though this may be an issue with all bluetooth devices). These issues are too minor for me to detract a star though. So, to sum it up, if you're looking for a great pair of headphones, these are it. If you're looking for the best pair of noise cancelling headphones money can buy, these are it.

I've had these earphones for a year now and I feel like they are the best noise cancelling headphones I have ever owned. My previous ones were an older model Bose and then a comparable Sennheiser. My job requires that I do inspections in various industrial facilites. The ambient noise levels I deal with vary between 78-82db. My initial work is about five hours in an office, but the decibel level is still around 70dB. At that level, the Sony WH-1000XM4 remove about 95% of the ambient noise. Music, computer videos and telephone conversations are excellent. These headphones are very good at that level. I next spend up to four hours inspecting out on the equipment floor. The noise level, while not painfully loud at that volume, can cause short term hearing damage in short sessions, but 5hrs/day on a regular basis can permenantly affect your hearing. To give you a reference point, you would have to shout at someone standing about 3ft away for them to understand you. So it's not jet engine loud, but it's uncomfortable and in addition to hearing damage, long term exposure can raise your blood pressure and cause other negative effects on your physical and mental health. And yet, the level at which OSHA requires hearing protection is 85dB. All this is to say that I take sound cancellation seriously, and I also take my music seriously too. These earphones are great on both fronts. I'm very comfortable at work and I can listen to my playlists and don't feel as if I have to turn up the volume to drown out the noise of the machinery. It's really pretty cool. My total shift is about ten hours, and I feel no discomfort wearing these over my ears. I'm also bald, and there is plenty of padding on the band where it contacts the top of my head. I'm very happy with these, and even though I've spent more for earphones, I've never had a better pair for my needs. The only downside is that they are not great when using them to make phone calls in the loud enviroment. I honestly didn't expect them to function great in that respect, but it would have been great if they did. I use them continuously throughout my shift. They tether to my computer for video conferencing, and for watching videos. They work with my phone for calls in the office, and for music out on the inspeciton floor. Honestly, I did not expect them to be so versatile and so useful. The Sony app has numerous ways to customize your experience. More than I actually use. The adaptive sound kept changing the noise cancellation as I moved, so I turned it off. The Speak to Chat feature could be handy, but if you use it, don't sing along with your music or it will switch off the cancellation. So I turned that feature off also. They charge quickly and hold a charge for a good 20hrs of use. I usually recharge them every other day. While not particularly light, they are comfortable and fit me really well. No pressure on my ears. I really don't notice them once they've been on for a few minute. I've added photos to show the condition of the ear pads headpiece after a year of wear. They look great, although I admit I do take care of them. PROS: Very comfortable to wear for long hours at a time. Excellent sound cancellation. Love that they pause the playback when you remove the headphones. Great that just holding a hand over the right ear cup will turn off cancellation so you can have a conversation without removing your earphones. Very good music reproduction. Bass is not quite true, but if it was really pronounced, I could adjust the equalizer. The app is very good and has a lot of features, I was pleasantly surprised even though I don't need or use many of them. It's very helpful. Love the ability to stay connected to two devices at the same time. My phone and my computer work well with the earphones. Sensitive enough that I can change tracks and volume wearing leather gloves. Cons: Sometimes I wish they were a little more snug (maybe I have a small head?) The app is almost TOO helpful. It can take some trial and error to get everything set up as you like it. Overall, these are a total win, and a bargain at the price. You could probably get something just a shade better, but it would be at a significantly higher price. These are perfect for me and my situation. I would defintely buy them again.
