  • High value purchase at refurb pricing
For being a refurb, it looks like new. There was a slight scuff on the carrying case that I have yet to try to remedy. Mostly because I don't care. The sound is great to these old ears. I think the limiting factor is my source material. I have tried both bluetooth and corded connections and both sounded great. I was disappointed at having to create an account and installing a phone app. I just view it a corporations trying to create an extra revenue stream from gleaning my personal data. If one doesn't feel the need to update the firmware or just uses a corded connection, you could skip the app. I don't understand the need for the app. Higher end headphones and DAP shouldn't need an equalizer, or other sound shapers and effects. The corded connection is rated at 32 ohms which makes the product reasonably sensitive so my portable DAP doesn't need a high volume setting. After all these years the noise cancelling I don't need to crank up the volume. I don't know how cancellation is active and how much is passive but it is quite effective. Low volume delivers the clarity, detail, and presence I crave. I find the headset quite comfortable for my head and ears. I would recommend. ... show more

  • One of the top Bluetooth headphone sets available for the price
This “B” (renewed) version of the Sony 1000/5’s is probably one of the best values for a top quality Bluetooth headphone currently available. It’s a no-frills presentation with the Sony “B” when it arrives. Brown Amazon box, zippered headphone case in a plastic bag, 90 day warranty info, the plug-in cord (yes, you can plug these in AND use them as Bluetooth phones!) and the power cord - see the photo. For a really in-depth review of these phones, refer to John Darko’s review of them on Darko Audio on the web. John’s review covers all the finer points in great detail. John’s video was recorded on 10/11/22 and compares the Sony WH-5000XM5’s to Bowers and Wilkins Px7 s2’s which are also $399 - the same price as the new Sony model. My take on the Sonys - - they fit well and are comfortable for a few hours - they can be used as a corded phone by leaving the power off and just plugging them in - the fold flat but they don’t fold up like the version 1-4 did. That’s not a big deal for me, I travel with ear buds, not over ear phones. - the app has a LOT of flexibility for adjusting the sound and system. - the controls work well on the right ear cup. Volume up and down, play/pause, track back or advance to name a few. - audio evaluations are inherently subjective. I have a pair of Meze 99’s Classics that I use daily as well. The Sony have great bass, the Meze phones do as well. The mid-range on the Meze seems more refined but I’m using the Ifi Zen Can amp tuned for the Meze 99’s so it’s not really a fair comparison. - not a mark or any visible defect anywhere on the “B” version that I bought. They look and sound brand new. For rhe $130 off off list for the “B” versus new, I don’t think you can get a better sound quality and app flexibility from a closed, over ear cordless phone for the price. Hope that helps! ... show more

  • Excellent is excellent
Last Christmas we gave our son a pair of Sony WH-CH520 headphones and he liked them. He earned some money this summer and decided he wanted to upgrade to the high dollar pair. But we've had good experiences with renewed items on Amazon, the only return came from finding a better price on a new item after already receiving an item. So of course this is a great deal compared to new. The noise cancelling is very effective and since they're over ear headphones its very easy to become immersed in what you're listening to. The sound quality is impressive but made better when you use the app to activate surround. They're very light for headphones. There's a nice thick cushion on the band and the cups so you could wear these all day. I guess the only complaint is that it didn't come with any cables but we've got plenty of usb-c cables and these will never be used corded anyway. ... show more

  • Incredible Sound & Travel-Ready – With a Few Long-Term Concerns
I’ve had the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones for about a year now, and they’ve easily become one of my favorite pieces of tech. Pros: Top-Tier Sound – Clear highs, rich mids, and just the right amount of bass. Whether I’m listening to music, podcasts, or watching movies, the audio is consistently excellent. Outstanding Noise Cancellation – The Auto NC Optimizer works like a charm, especially on flights or in noisy environments. It genuinely makes a difference. Seamless Connectivity – They pair quickly and reliably, and (as far as I can tell) support simultaneous connection to two Bluetooth devices. No lag or hiccups between my phone and laptop. Cross-Platform Compatibility – Works great with Apple devices, Android, Mac, and PC. The included cable is long enough for most situations and has been totally trouble-free. Long Battery Life – I regularly go several days without charging, even with heavy use. No complaints there. Travel-Friendly Case – The included case is well-designed, durable, and perfect for keeping everything safe on the go. Cons: Not Great for Side-Lying or Resting Against Surfaces – If you try to wear them while leaning against a window or lying on your side, you’ll start to feel discomfort. The cups are plush but not immune to pressure points. Call Quality is Just OK – It works, but the mic tends to pick up surrounding noise during calls. Fine for casual use, but not the best in loud environments. Durability Concern – While mine have held up well, the rotating ear pieces feel a bit fragile. I’m careful with them, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that joint is a long-term weak spot. Overall, these are premium headphones that justify their price. If you’re using them for work, travel, or everyday listening, they’re hard to beat—just handle them with a bit of care. ... show more

  • THIS ITEM COMPLETELY **PHYSICALLY** BROKE AFTER FOUR MONTHS.
Absolute garbage durability. THIS ITEM COMPLETELY **PHYSICALLY** BROKE AFTER FOUR MONTHS. Cannot stress this enough. I am a very soft user of headphones and I am never the type to aggressively fit them and etc, but what happened today was absolutely shocking. I've had these headphones for about 4 months or so, and I've constantly had issues where the headphones would auotmatically play Spotify on my iPhone app whilst being connected to my computer, basically creating an endless loop of my computer never being able to play anything. I don't even use the Spotify app, it just opened it so much that I just had to delete it, and still, it would open Apple Music (even though I don't use that either). And then, to top off the cake, the headphones today just snapped. The tight area connecting the headband to the earmuffs just snapped totally in half for literally no reason. No stress, no pulling, no tugging. I pulled the headphones out to simply put them over my head and they snapped. You can search up all over the internet how prevalent this issue is if you are somebody interested in buying. ... show more

  • Top tier noise, cancellation
Sounds awesome

  • Almost. But not quite.
The noise cancellation on these is incredible, as is the sound quality. As others have noted, these are also very light. I have decided to return them, however. Although the cups that fit over your ears are comfortable, the band that goes over your head is not. Or at least, maybe not for bald folks like me. The band is really narrow from front to back. Usually there is a sweet spot in terms of adjustment where the cups against the side of your head and the band over your head evenly distribute the weight of the headphones so you don't feel too much pressure at any point. No matter how I adjusted these, they were uncomfortable after just a few minutes. I have a pair of lower quality headphones that don't sound nearly as good but the band and padding that contact the top of your head are much better. The weight is evenly distributed with no pressure points. I can wear them all day when I'm doing a lot of programming. I couldn't say the same about these Sony headphones. So although they sound wonderful, they don't meet my needs. Also, Sony's app for the headphones hits you with various marketing offers and wants to exchange more data than is necessary during setup. Totally unnecessary. I just want to quickly set up EQ and gestures and move on. ... show more
