  • I trust Winsor and Newton. LIghtfastness issues, though.
I have other water color pencils but I wanted to try these since I love Winsor and Newton watercolors and have used those for 30 years. Both Cotman and Artists paint. They are very nice! I wish they had lightfastness ratings but I understand those are coming. Meanwhile I have put them up in my window to test. See results below. They work beautifully if you do not mind this issue.and this is as compared to Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle and Albrecht Durer. The pencil is thinner to hold than either of those but feels like a quality product in the hand. They have a sheerness that mimics watercolor from a tube or pan (they are not exactly the same, which is impossible), while still having very good color payout. They melt very well on cold pressed water color paper and they flow. The price on Amazon is very good. Otherwise I only see them at MIchael's where they are a bit expensive even with coupon. I wish they were available open stock. I love the tin, but TBH I don't love the plastic insets which hold the pencil and are already looking fragile. But the pencils themselves seem strong. There is a good color selection in the 24 set. There is just one grey, but you can apply the black lightly for another. UPDATE: It's been one month since I bought them and started a lightfastness test in my not very sunny (winter) window. The pinks and the plum have noticeably faded. I will update in a month and say whether or not this gets worse. The other colors are fine so far though. 2nd UPDATE: Most of the pinks, peaches and purples have vanished or changed so much they aren't recognizable. The red is fading. It is true that these colors are the least lightfast in most sets, but its not a plus for these pencils. My prismacolor watercolor pencils do much better in this regard (though they have sharpening problems). I'm taking off a star because of this. If you are going to display your art, don't use this brand but they will be a nice choice for coloring books or journalling. 3rd UPDATE: this is the last report I will make on my window test, because my point is made, these are not lightfast. However, I did want to clarify something. Interestingly enough it's only when they are used as watercolors that the lightfastness is bad. Used a a dry pencil, only the purple changes color (to a blue). ... show more

  • Good For Coloring
Harder, waxy colored pencils that hold up to use when coloring. Not as great as watercolor pigments. Too waxy to release enough pigments that can be picked up when water is added. The pastel-like soft watercolor crayons are easier to use with wet brushes than these. These leave the drawing marks after pressing hard to get the pigments on the paper. ... show more

  • Great product
The media could not be loaded. This color pencils are the perfect tool , it combine the precision of the pencil with the watercolor technique, and it look amazing, great pigments and are erasable before put water in, I’m happy and recommended!

  • Worst Watercolor Pencils on the Market........Definitely NOT for Artists
These arrived 20 minutes ago. I own the 48pc. W&N Studio Colored Pencils and found my set to be just right size, color selection and pigmentation for etc. and the price was excellent. So, I thought I'd buy the 24 pc. Watercolor Pencils to complement them. It's W&N, so they must be as good as their watercolor. I was so very, very wrong. These pencils are so poor I loaded a picture of them for you to see. They are awful. I had to press hard on quality handmade 140 lb paper for a decent lay down. If you need to press for a watercolor pencil there is something wrong. And you'll crush the tooth of the paper. Watercolor pencils should glide onto the paper. Several are completely misnamed and so unpigmented that you can barely see them. Well folks, they're made in Vietnam and not France where we think W&N watercolors are made. After all, watercolor pencils are watercolor in core form and these should be at least as good as their student grade Cotman brand, even though they say they are "Winsor and Newton," pencils. That logo being synonymous with their Artist Grade pigments. These wouldn't have made it off the assembly line in France. Please see the attached picture and the color labels. The picture of preblended swatches and water added swatches are 4 to 6 hard pressed layers. The last color in the top row is labeled "Royal Blue." Colors that were too weak were left off the blend. ... show more

  • Good Student Quality
These are a great learning tool for a beginning watercolor artist. The pigments are not as strong but they lend themselves to layering. Great watercolor pencil starter set.

  • Best water color pencil
Very nice colors…looks terrific when water is added with a brush. You can layer ink or other colored pencil over the top when the surface is dry. 👍

  • Nice pencils
These pencils are good and work almost as nicely as my much more expensive Caron de Arche pencils which are slightly more intense and have more color options. I enjoy using these pencils and if more colors were available I would probably purchase them. They seem to be color fast and more info on color fastness will be coming from Winsor &Newton. They come in a very classy tin box. ... show more
