Description

Winsor & Newton Series 7 - The World's Finest Water Color Brush. More than any other tool, the brush is a direct and fluid extension of the artist’s hand, eye and expressive vision. It is with that principle in mind that Winsor & Newton has crafted fine artists’ brushes for over 150 years, earning a reputation for making the world’s finest from the very best raw materials. The standards of quality for this brush were set in 1866, when her majesty Queen Victoria gave orders that Winsor & Newton, holders of the Royal Warrant, be commanded to produce the very finest water color brushes in her favorite size the No. 7. The resulting brush known as the Series 7 and the standards of quality set in 1866 are the same today. There are three essential qualities that define the finest water color brush: Point, Snap & Spring and Flow Control. Since 1866, the handmade Series 7 has proven itself to be the standard –bearer in all those qualities, offering a rapier-like point, perfectly balanced spring with extraordinary capacity and flow control. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Winsor & Newton Series 7.

After months of research and considering the hype this brush gets from pro miniature painters, I finally caved in. I own other kolinsky sable brushes but have only one favorite "workhorse" that I use for every step of miniature painting (my grandfather's old brush). I felt I was ready to branch out and try some other brands, among them the highly recommended Winsor & Newton Series 7, size 1. The first one I ordered was packed well, complete with brush protector and tube. Out of the tube the tip looked great but it immediately failed the "flick" test by giving me a Vulcan salutation. After washing and trying to train the hairs with Masters brush soap for a day I introduced it to some paint and a miniature the following day. Again, hello Forky! The tip would split and fray immediately upon touching the miniature surface, even with extremely thinned down paint (think glaze consistency). I spent more time trying to reshape the point than actually getting paint on my mini. I started to doubt my ability to use a paintbrush, wondering if this one somehow "knew" that I wasn't a professional miniature painter, and even turned to various internet sources to rule out possible user error. As my frustration got the better of me, I decided to order a second one which came in today. After washing, I immediately subjected the new brush to the trusty flick test and lo and behold, it passed with flying colors. I then proceeded to paint my miniature with it and it held its point nicely with excellent paint retention in the belly. Oh what joy this brush is! The snap is wonderful and I feel I have excellent control of paint flow and placement. It had no issues on larger surfaces or getting those tiny details painted. Both brushes were packaged securely and looked pristine right out of the tube. Shipment did not seem to be the issue here. Considering the difference in both brushes and similar experiences reported by other reviewers I can only assume, that the manufacturer's quality control is inconsistent. I cannot comment on longevity yet or whether or not the brushes are authentic, as this is the first W&N series 7 I've ever owned. So, I guess the takeaway is to order two or three (if you can), test, and keep the best. If you get a good one, oh my! I've also included a couple of photos of the sable brushes I own (some of them are new and have not been used extensively yet) to establish and compare sizes in case you're trying to decide on your next purchase. From left to right (top to bottom) these are: 1. Escoda Reserva travel brush - size 2 2. Raphaël 8404 - size 2 3. Escoda Reserva - size 1 4. Reaper Pro - size 1 5. Winsor & Newton Series 7 - size 1 6. Da Vinci Maestro Series 10 - size 2 7. Artis Opus Series S - size 1 8. Grandpa's brush (Vang) - size 2 ... show more

I usually do not write reviews, but had to share my experience. It was hard to pay so much for one paint brush, but due to the nature of my project, I was not able to easily accomplish what I wanted with what I had. I bought all the different types of brushes, some more expensive that others. They were not cutting it. They say buy a good brush, but they are $$$. Out of desperation, I shelled out for the Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Watercolor Brush - Round #1. And three others, the same, only other sizes. I just used it, and I had only one thing in my mind as I painted with this brush-it is a dream of a brush! I think I am in love with a paint brush at this point. No stray wayward bristles, and a ability to paint a sharper point than I thought possible with this size. It held paint good, layed down the paint good, had a good feel with the handle, and just the right flexibility to the bristles. It was sooooo nice to finally have such a good experience with a brush! It made things so much more easy than the other brushes I have used. I never thought that there would be such a difference, but there is. It was easily worth the money to me and I have no regrets. And it is nice to actually get what I paid for a a lot more. They are right, it is good to invest in a good brush. ... show more

  • Best brush for miniature painting
Size: #1 Style: Round
This brush was recommended to me by a member of the GW heavy metal painting team and after using it for a a while now I am very impressed. I have painted thousands of miniatures and I find this to be well worth the extra money for detail painting. Do not use with washes or dry brushing, this is for detail and fine layer painting (miniature wise anyway). ... show more

Think I must have received someone else's return, the tip lost its point immediately after the first brush stroke. There were signs of wear on the handle. Going back. Sent the original one back, ordered another. Thought, what are the chances? Though I did wait until the order had shipped before sending back the old one. The images attached to this review are from the 2nd order. As you can see, there is dried paint in the bristles. ... show more

  • Mixed experiences
Size: #1 Style: Round
I bought this brush because the W&N Series 7 are well regarded by people in the miniature painting hobby. When it arrived I began using it, and for a few minutes it worked well. However the bristles soon began splitting into three parts. I washed it out with water and The Masters Brush Cleaner and reshaped the tip, then left it overnight. The next day I started painting with it, and after a few strokes the bristles split again. I've also experienced problems with paint flow, even if I load the brush up with watered down paint after a couple strokes it starts to dry out. I couldn't believe all these problems were occurring with such a highly rated brush, so I did some more research and discovered that at some point in the last few years W&N's quality control began going downhill. This thing was a waste of money, I have cheap Army Painter brushes that perform far better. Update: A few months after my initial review I decided to buy two more of these brushes just to see if I'd experience the same problem. I ordered a #0 and a #1, and I'm happy to say neither of them have any problems and work great. The first one I got must have been a result of poor quality control. ... show more
