  • Unit was difficult to adjust until I cleaned it up and re-lubed
1. The vise was very difficult to adjust so I had to disassemble, clean and re-lube. The vise was wrapped in plastic and somewhat oily, but still bound up until I cleaned it. 2. The bottom worm gear is barely secured within the pilot hole on the opposite side of the adjustment crank. Not a problem yet but I wonder about it. Gear should be about 3/8" longer. 3. Bolt down slots are tightest with 7/16" bolts. Because I want to use T-Bolts to secure it to my drill press table and 7/16" are not available for T-Bolts, I had to use 3/8" T-Bolts which require over tightening to compensate for the sloppiness within the slot. Not sure why a reputable vise maker would slots oversized for 3/8" or undersized for 1/2" market available T-Bolts. ... show more

  • Gets the job done
My favorite part about this vise is being able to make small adjustments quickly while drilling custom parts. I bought this to make multiple consistent cuts and quick change ups on my drill. With a set of good parallels, this gets the jobs done for me with ease.

  • but I cannot recommend it because I think it has a serious design ...
In many ways I found the vise I received to be a reasonabe quality piece of equipment for the price, but I cannot recommend it because I think it has a serious design flaw. As others who have reviewed the vise have noted, mine came with grime in the ways and the slides were not well adjusted. By a combination of partly disassembling it, oiling it generously, operating its slides, and then wiping up the grime, I was able to get it cleaned up. However, the sliding T-handle on the clamp is a poor design because when the top sliding part is moved in the direction away from the T-handle, that handle comes in contact with the body before the top slide is at its limit (this is not clear in the product image which shows the T-handle in the horizontal position--in use the T-handle tends to end up in the vertical position with the handle slid downward). In the process of adjusting the top slide, which was hard to move, I didn't notice that the T-handle was against the body and, when I put a little pressure on the slide handle, the end of the screw with the T-bar snapped off. The Wilton website offers replacement handle assemblies for $39 and I am sure that shipping would be added on to that. It's clear that I won't be buying a replacement part. ... show more

  • Wilton Cross Slide Vise
When I saw the name "WILTON" I associated it with the Wilton Vises of yesteryear, the 1st Class #1 Quality Vise That was built in the U S A. I think Ho Che Min snuck in on the blueprints on this one. It'a a little cheesy on the quality side, but it's better than holding things in your hand while you drill. The base mounting on the vise does NOT match the table on the drill press (poor engineering all drill tables are standard) so I had to fabricate a custom mounting base to mount it to the table, which was in my best interest so you would have enough room to operate the bottom slide crank without hitting your knuckles on the table. It's a long way from the "WILTON" brand quality I used to know. ... show more
