Frequently asked questions

The Whynter ARC-148MS is designed with a powerful air conditioning capability, a dehumidifier, and a fan function. It efficiently cools rooms up to 500 square feet by pulling in warm air, cooling it, and then circulating the chilled air back into the room. The dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air, which helps in improving air quality and providing a more comfortable living environment especially in humid conditions. The fan can be used alone to circulate air without cooling, making it versatile for different weather conditions.

The Whynter ARC-148MS is designed as a portable air conditioner, meaning it does not require permanent installation and can be moved from one room to another. It comes with caster wheels for easy mobility and includes a window venting kit, which is easy to set up or remove. This makes it convenient for cooling different rooms as needed without the hassle of a permanent installation.

The Whynter ARC-148MS requires regular maintenance to function efficiently, including cleaning or replacing the air filter to ensure unrestricted airflow, draining the collected moisture from the dehumidifying process depending on the humidity level of your environment, and ensuring the exhaust hose is properly installed and not obstructed. It is recommended to clean the filter bi-weekly or more frequently if it's used in a dusty environment, and to follow the manufacturer's instructions for any additional maintenance or care.

The Whynter ARC-148MS is designed with energy efficiency in mind, featuring a programmable timer and adjustable thermostat to help control energy use. While the actual increase to your electricity bill will depend on how frequently you use the air conditioner and your local energy rates, the ARC-148MS's energy-saving features allow for more precise cooling control and less wasted energy. Additionally, using the dehumidifier function can help make your room feel cooler without lowering the thermostat, potentially saving on energy costs.

  • a great buy and value, tested
Style: Cooling Only
I got this air conditioner yesterday and will give my review and tests on it now, first I already own a whynter 122 model which is 7000BTU DOE and 12000 BTU ashre. it has worked wonderfully for a year now. NOW to THIS modelarc 148ms. this arrived yesterday with the bottom of the box bent up, UPS is hard as hell on products they ship, a horrible carrier. HOWEVER NO damage was done to the unit itself. installation was easier than on my previous duel hose whynter. it took me 20 minutes to get it all set up. THEN I waited 4 hours for the freon to settle before turning it on as whynter suggests. I have this in a 28 X 16.5 foot living room . NOW the tests. First it cools like crazy!, in a room at a hot 84 degrees I got a outlet temp of 58 degrees which is 26 dregees below room temp which is VERY Good!. ( air condition pros state that a good/OK air conditioner outlet temp thats 15-20 degrees below room temp is good, Less than 14 degrees and something is wrong with the AC). it cooled my room down 1 degree in just 5 minutes!. . NEXT, power draw. this AC draws the rated 11.3 amps and 1300 watts on high with the AC going full blast. fan only is 77 watts. NOTE!, if you have this hooked up to a 15 AMP circuit I reccommend no other lights or applience be hooked on the circuit. for a 20 AMP circuit you can run some lights ot a TV on the same circuit. ( NOTE: Im not an electrician or a AC repairman, these are my suggestions from personal experience). NEXXT....sound level. this unit is loud. on high it generates 62DBA at 4 feet from the unit in a live room with NO carpet or curtins. on low it generated 59DBA at 4 feet. HOWEVER at 10 feet from the unit watching TV its not too loud but I do have to turn the volume up a bit. for sleeping this noise should be great for sleeping as its a whuiute noise type noise. in a room with carpet, drapes and lots of heavy furnature or a bed it will be quieter as these thing soak up the noise.. againm my room is "live" and soaks up very little sound. reliability?? I dont know as Ive only had it one day, but with proper care its expected to last 7-10 years. overall this was a GREAT buy at $387 that I paid!. especially for a 14000 BTU ashrea/10300BTU DOE unit. NOTE 2!!!!: do not worry about whether an AC is one or two hose!, the ONLY thing that matters is the BTU DOE rating, the BTU ASHREA rating us useless for portable AC's. ... show more

  • Nice portable AC. Cools my medium size bedroom to 68 degrees when its 110 F outside. Nice portable AC. Cools my medium size bedroom to 68 degrees when its 110 F outside.
Style: Cooling Only
This Whynter ARC-148MS portable AC seems to be well built (heavy) and Whynter has been in this business for a long time. I chose Whynter because of this and their US based support. Generally this AC is a typical design (good) with the 5.9 inch exhaust hose I need to plug right into my through-the-wall port. It has a stylish design and cools my medium sized bedroom down to about 68 F when it’s 110 F outside here in the Nevada desert. I believe my success with cooling is due to my optimized hot air exhaust and the fact my bedroom is inside a home with central air so it doesn’t have to work so hard. I've had portable air conditioners for 15 years and I've learned a few things. Most importantly keep your exhaust hose as short as possible and as straight as possible. Rather than mess with my windows and all the issues that brings I elected to go straight out through a wall to the outside. To do this I bought online a 6 inch exhaust vent complete with wind damper and a bug screen. This provides the optimal exhaust path with the least resistance so heat is pushed outside efficiently. (Luxury Metals Co.) Don't be tempted to use a "dryer vent" as these are typically only 4 inch diameter and too small for your AC. If you do or if you use a long, snaking hose with many bends you'll be saying "Why isn't my new AC working as well as I had hoped. I expected more cooling". Once installed I caulked it and painted it to match my house. Then just simply plug your 5.9 inch diameter AC hose into it. SEE PHOTOS The automatic moisture removal through the hot exhaust works well and I see little or no water at the drains. Of course it helps that our desert climate has low humidity. The only issue I had was the first Whynter AC arrived damaged due, in my opinion, to packaging not robust enough for freight handling. Luckily the replacement arrived OK. I recommend this AC. ... show more

  • Want a great portable air conditioner? Look no further!
Style: Cooling Only
I live in the Pacific Northwest, an area known more for its incessant rain (at least that is what we tell the Californians) then prolonged heat waves. No more. Like the rest of the planet, we are having record breaking and substained highs in the nineties. Thus, my husband and I began to research portable air conditioner units. The WynterARC-148MS had the most positive reviews, is made in the US, and promises the most coverage under a thousand bucks. It came on a Monday. After setting it right side up for the recommended four hours, we turned it on. It has been running ever since. We have a fifteen foot ceiling in our living/dining room area, and have yet to install a ceiling fan in this area. However, with some judiciously placed floor fans, I have been able to route the cool air into other rooms in our condo. It just hums away, cranking out that delicious cold air Notice, I said hums. No, it does’t clank, clatter, walk across the room, or sound like a landing Concorde. It is a white noise that disappears with softly played music, the television, or conversation. Because I am using it to cool exponentially more area then the factory promises, it never cools to the temperature selected, nor is it supposed to. I looked at many portable air units and they have all became a jumble, but a review I read regarding some unit of this ilk, complained that his or unit wasn’t as good as central air. That comment makes as much sense as saying “ You can’t drive it anywhere.”.The specs are clearly stated in the unit’s description. The unit comes with a window kit that is good for a four foot opening. There are two pieces that slide up and down, or in and out. They will fit on a four foot window. If your window is larger, you may want an extra window kit, or make your own extension. The unit has casters, so one can roll it to the desired location. It does weigh close to eighty pounds. I drained the unit today (Friday) and only got a half a cup of water out of it. I do not live in a humid climate. If one does live where humidity is a problem, the unit will have to be drained more frequently So, in conclusion, I must say that I am more then pleased with the Wynter ARC-148MS. I can not find one thing wrong with it. It performs better then its expectations in a quiet manner. Still can’t drive it. ... show more

  • Warranty/Replacement Unit
Style: Cooling Only
I purchased my 1st Whynter A/C unit in 2020. It has worked properly each summer and provided my apartment w/ the cool air needed. I plugged the unit in this past May (2023) & no cold air was coming out of the vent and no warm air was coming out of the exhaust hose. I contacted Whynter regarding the issue & I was put in contact with Jose G. He asked me to do a little trouble shooting with the unit & he came to the conclusion it was possibly the compressor which was still under it's 3 year warranty and he asked me to send the unit to the Whynter address provided in the email. I sent the unit in and within a week or two, Jose G. informed me that a new unit was being shipped out to my address. I was not only impressed with the replacement unit but with the customer service Jose G. provided throughout the entire process. He is a very professional, timely, well informed and kind Whynter employee. He kept in contact with me & efficiently answered any questions I had. Not only do I feel Whynter has high quality products, I feel they have high quality employees as well. ... show more

  • BEWARE: Warranty is just a word starting with "W"
Style: Cooling Only
I loved the apparent quality of the product. I have had major exhaust hose connection and deterioration issues with other manufacturers. The Whynter connections were just the best. Remote worked great, fan turned on.....oh,uh....compressor did not turn on. So, OK, stuff happens. I read the manual, worked through the troubleshooting tips..nada. I then email customer service. They send me a lengthy email of what more I can try. Some I can do, but sending the unit to Wynter service center (as they suggested as they DO NOT have tech support nor do they contract with a repair service) or returning it to Amazon is outside my stamina level. EVEN if I got it re-boxed....there is no way, without hiring "muscle" to get this piece of equipment into my SUV to get it anywhere. I am 73 years old, working 3 jobs and COME ON.... A warranty in my situation is meaningless. I now have to hire an outside repair person (which will, of course, void the non-existent warranty)....or use the AC as a giant door stop. ... show more

  • Good unit, but expect it to last 2 years or less.
Style: Cooling Only
I have purchased 2 of these units in the past. The first one died 1 month shy of the warranty. Manufacturer did replace it, but it took a while. I had to buy another in the meantime. When the warranty replacement showed up, I stored it. When the second unit died, I pulled the warranty replacement unit out (didn't bother doing a warranty claim on the second unit. The warranty replacement unit ust died. So here's what I can tell you about it. When it works, it works very well. What seems to happen is that it loses coolant over time, and there is no way to service it. You will get about 2 years of use out of it max before you start noticing it is running continuously, not cooling, and you'll find the unit frozen up (ice). You can let it thaw and turn it back on, but it won't cool at that point, and just builds up ice again. So if you buy this unit, just know you'll get about 2 years out of it, and that will be it. This seems to be quite common with these in room units (and none of them are servicable). Not sure why that is. ... show more

  • Why Whynter!
Style: Cooling Only
I bought this product to keep my house cool while I was away. It is well undersized for the job but it kept the place cool enough and dry, which is what I needed it for most. I started it up to get ready for this summer season and it tested fine but when I put it into place it stopped cooling. I couldn't see or hear anything obviously wrong with it so I called Whynter customer support. I was aware of the 1 year warranty and only expected to get tips on how to service it myself. I was surprised by Angel's attentive ear and she caught on that I had exceeded the 1 year warranty, but the compressor had another 2 years. She asked for a few simple temperature tests and basic troubleshooting to confirm it was the compressor. 2 weeks later, this review, and the cost of shipping I am cooling again with a new unit. Angel with Whynter deserves acknowledgment for her keen ear, knowledge of their system, and shipping logistics to create a lasting positive customer experience. When I was performing the checks I opened the housing and noticed how much attention was taken to dampening noise and clean designs. Other than the force coming out of the vent it is quiet. ... show more
