Description

Read by the author | Now featuring new bonus content! Nearly 500,000 copies sold! | A Southern Living Book of the Month Selection From New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin comes the moving story of a heart surgeon who's hiding his own heart, a little girl whose heart won't last much longer, and a shared journey toward healing for both of them--for fans looks for the emotional depth of Fredrik Backman and the Southern atmosphere of Delia Owens. It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl's pretty yellow dress can't quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives. Before it's over, they'll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry . . . and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners. With its beautiful, lyrical writing, engaging characters who stick with you, and a storyline that will touch your own heart, it's no wonder why so many readers adore When Crickets Cry. • Wow!
Format: Kindle
One of my favorite books -ever! I learned so much about the heart, medically and emotionally as one of God’s greatest life-giving gifts. After I finished the book, I went back and re-read the last two chapters. This book was so well written. I loved the quotes, Annie’s sweet, heart and all the characters just drew you in. Thank you, Charles Martin, for taking me on this wonderful journey! This is such a touching story. Highly recommended!! ... show more

  • A Beautiful Story That Stays With You Long After the Last Page
Format: Paperback
When Crickets Cry” is one of those rare books that touches both the heart and the soul. Charles Martin has a gift for weaving deep emotion with beautifully written prose. The story of Reese and Annie is tender, heartbreaking, and ultimately full of hope and redemption. The characters feel so real that you can’t help but root for them — flawed, courageous, and human in every way. Martin’s descriptions are vivid and lyrical, painting scenes you can see and feel. Beyond being a love story, it’s also a powerful exploration of loss, forgiveness, and second chances. This isn’t just a book you read; it’s one you experience. It made me laugh, cry, and reflect on what truly matters in life. I can’t recommend it highly enough. ... show more

  • Martin Shares His Gift of Writing With Us
Format: Kindle
The first book I read by Mr. Martin was “Long Way Gone.” The writing was so well done and the story so moving, that I looked for another of his books. This book, “When Crickets Cry”, was as good as the first. His stories are so unpredictable and fresh. There is no foreshadowing of where the story is going so every word, sentence, phrase is like opening a gift. This story chronicles Reese’s love affair with a small, strong, beautiful little girl, Annie, with a heart of gold. She is loved by everyone she encounters, but she is expected to die unless they find a new heart for her. At this point, the reader could put the book aside expecting that the little girl will get a new heart and there will be a nice happy ending, but there is so much more to the story. Reese, the protagonist, slowly tells his story intertwined with hers. Subtle hints are dropped along the way that let us know he has a deep and sad story that he keeps hidden from himself and the world. Mr. Martin takes us on a long, engaging, interesting, and emotional journey to save Annie. Note: I gave it 4 stars because I don't like story lines that are obvious. We know how the story will end, but it's a trip through small town America and the lives of those who live there. Bon appetit… ... show more

  • Highly Recommended.
Format: Kindle
I've just finished When Crickets Cry written by Charles Martin. What a joy to read. The dynamics between all the characters is realistic and relatable. And the information about crickets and transplants most interesting but not over the top. In turns heartbreaking and joyful, the story grabs you and doesn't let go until the very last full stop. Highly recommended, and I'm so looking forward to reading more of his books. ... show more

  • Amazing book!!! Loved it!
Format: Kindle
Beautifully written... enjoyed the book so much. It was a slower read for me as I wanted to enjoy the beauty of the work. Very medical (I am a nurse) so I also enjoyed that aspect... could easily see it made into a movie - but would hate to lose the thoughts of the main character... excellent.

  • Engaging story
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed the story line and characters, which reflected complexity and connection. I didn’t find it believable that the main character would be able to jump right into surgery after 5 years of hiding, or that other professionals would let him. The ending was unexpected. Overall an engaging story.
