The first grinder delivered had to be returned because it vibrated so bad the flexible light would not stay put when positioned, and it just didn't appear proper. A good speed range for sharpening chisels, wood turning tools and mower blades. the product could be improved by making the flexible light neck more firm so it would stay put when the grinder is in use. Also having the light operate even while the grinder is not turning would be helpful. My grinder has a significant wobble when coming up to speed. The wobble is slight but still present at all speeds. Changing wheels did not change the wobble, so I assume the problem is excess runout of the arbor. Finally, the two mounting holes for the grinder are located directly in line of and beneath the arbor on both sides, and are thus awkward to access - you can’t sight straight down to align the holes to whatever base you want to fasten the grinder to. Finally, the tool rest are a bit cheap, but still useable.

I will allow that some buyers may have received defective unit, which resulted in a negative review. However, with the exception of a few minor details, the unit I received was just fine. Right off the bat, except for a few small differences, this grinder seems to be the same one Grizzly sells for $160.00, plus $19.00 shipping. The differences are that the Grizzly has different wheel grits and does not come with either a dressing tool or an extra tool rest. Plus, the Grizzly owners manual is much better than the Wen. I don't mean to put Grizzly down here because their customer support is outstanding. But if money is tight, you CAN save $69.00 on Wen vrs the Grizzly, which would allow you to buy a couple of extra wheels and a diamond grit dressing tool if you want, Some buyers have complained that the light won't work unless the main power switch is turned on. Wen apparently has taken note of this because on the unit I received you can turn the light on whether or not the main power switch is turned on. Both wheels wobble side to side a very small amount. But this doesn't cause any noticeable vibration. I will eventually bolt the unit to a home made stand. Surprisingly however, the grinder I got runs so smoothly and is heavy enough that I can use it for the time being sitting directly on its rubber feet on my work bench. I had a definite reason for buying this grinder. I am just beginning to take up turning and got a great deal on a used Delta 1460 wood lathe. However I have found that a set of the best lathe chisels are going to run north of $350.00. I decided instead to buy this grinder and a set of HSS chisels from Harbor Freight for $64.00. The chisels are really quite nice except they are useless unless you sharpen them first. So now I have lathe chisels that work just fine, plus a dandy grinder - all for maybe half what a deluxe set of chisels would have cost.

The grinder seemed fine at first, but after just one year of light occasional use, it has stopped working. When you turn on the switch there is a slight hum but the wheels don't turn, even with a little push to get them going. I'm your basic DIY'er, and I've only used the grinder dozen times or so, mostly on aluminum (so its not like its been in a machine shop with constant heavy use). I'm contacting customer service currently (as I type this), so depending on how they respond I may change my rating. UPDATE: Changed the ratting to 4 stars, because after calling the support number, I spoke to Phil (who was just outside of Chicago) and explained the issue. He said that the issue was probably due to a bad capacitor and he said that he would send me a new one. He explained where it was located, and told me to look at the parts diagram in the manual or on-line. Being a relatively handy man I knew that it would not be difficult to replace. I would think that most of the people (99%) working with a grinder in the first place would be able to do the repair, however you will need a new butt connector or small wire nuts to do the job. I received the new capacitor in about 3 days and replaced it and and the grinder (after turning it on and off a few times...not sure why) it worked. I would give the grinder 3 stars because I still think its odd that the capacitor went out after a year of light use...but Phil's (customer support) quick response to the issue and easy of getting me a replacement part brought it up another star...Thanks Phil.
