Description

"Richards pieces together each woman's story as artfully as a quilter creates a quilt... Transcendent, endowed with warmth and compassion."—Booklist Three generations of women discover the healing gift of family, memories and love Needing time to contemplate her troubled marriage, Tessa MacRae agrees to spend the summer helping her mother and grandmother clean out the family home in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. But the three women have never been close. Helen, the family matriarch, is domineering and sharp-tongued. Nancy, Tessa's mother, appears to be little more than a social climber. And Tessa herself is in turmoil following a family tragedy that has affected them all. Now, with the gift of time, Tessa's eyes are opened, and she begins to see her mother and grandmother for the flawed but courageous women they are. As she restores a vintage wedding ring quilt pieced by her grandmother and quilted by her mother, the secrets that have shadowed their lives unfold at last. And each woman discovers that sometimes you have to clean house to find the things you thought were lost forever. Previously published Read more

  • Southern Roots
WEDDING RING by Emilie Richards Here's a book I would recommend to women who love to read about southern traditions and families. WEDDING RING by Emilie Richards takes place in the Shenandoah Valley --- Toms Brook, Virginia --- and centers on three generations of women that are learning to deal with each other and come to terms with a death in the family that occurred three years ago. Tessa McCrae had lost her only child Kayley in a car accident, and is still not able to deal with the emotions from this tragedy. She blames herself, and has shut out her husband to the point that she's driving him away, using the excuse of helping out with her grandmother to stay away from Mack during this particular summer. In the mean time, her mother Nancy has asked Tessa to help her with cleaning up Grandmother Helen's home in Toms Brook, and to their dismay they find that it's a mess. The term "pack rat" doesn't even describe the condition of this house. The many different quilts that are found in the house help bring the bickering women together. Helen and Nancy open up their souls and tell the stories of their childhoods and early years of marriage with the discovery of each quilt. It's a side that Tessa has never seen of each woman and it changes her perspective of both of them. The Wedding Ring quilt is one that helps unite the three women, and there is a history behind it. Tessa learns how the quilt was created, through the stories told by both Nancy and Helen, and it is a touching story. While the purpose of the title is not apparent from the start, by the end of the book the reader will understand how the Wedding Ring quilt is central to the story. The first of a trilogy of books called the Shenandoah Album trilogy, based on these traditional quilts, I found WEDDING RING a very enjoyable read. It's a type of book that will be enjoyed by women who like to read about family and traditions, in particular those families deeply rooted in the south. ... show more

  • Redemption and forgiveness - beautifully written
First in the Shenandoah Album stories, it revolves around three generations of women: Helen, crotchety quilter and hoarder, Nancy, the social climber, and Tessa, griever of the loss of her 5-year-old daughter. When Helen needs help, her daughter (Nancy) and granddaughter (Tessa) move in with her, determined to set things right, which includes moving Helen out of the messy house and cleaning it up in order to sell it. Those goals gradually change when Tessa discovers all manner of secrets in the house, including beautiful quilts made by Helen, some deemed "rejects," others beautiful works of art that Helen doesn't really recognize. Each of these women come to learn about themselves and their relatives, but mostly about their intertwining relationships with one another and their respective spouses: Helen's died on the Arizona after getting her pregnant. Nancy seems to have lost touch, though she still loves her successful husband from a prominent Richmond family. Tessa's grief places her at odds with her attorney husband, who also suffers the loss of their daughter, but also his marriage to Tessa. Will they ultimately divorce, as she seems to want to do? Or does she? An affecting, beautifully written tale of redemption and forgiveness amidst a greater awareness of family togetherness. ... show more

  • Finally. A real Author!
This was the first book that started me on the road to involved reading again. It was very good. Emilie Richards is an exceptional writer! Her stories grab you in the very beginning, and hold-on to your interest. She combines intrigue with romance and mystery. Definitely NOT the run-of-the-mill "smut" paperback :) Every one of her Shenandoah Album series carried me along tenaciously. I'm sorry there are only 5 novels in that series. I wished she would have branched out and created more in depth stories surrounding other characters, as they appeared in the series. But this book is DEFINITELY worth reading. Everyone to whom I loaned this book, is now an avid Emilie fan, and can't wait to sink their teeth into her succeeding books. Enjoy! ... show more

  • Delightful
I have read many of Emilie Richards books and even met her once at the Houston Quilt Show. Very interesting lady that writes books over a great field of interest but her Shenandoah series I found particularly appealing because of my quilting hobby. Even though she does not dwell on the quilting aspect of the book she does weave it into the story. It is a story of family values and unity with the rediscovery and appreciation in the relationships between multigenerational women and their secretes and solutions. Through the interchange the lead character, Tessa is learning insights into her own marriage and the tragedy that is ripping it apart. Very enjoyable for some light reading. Of course getting it from 1-Click on Amazon the reading fun begins immediately. ... show more

  • I loved this book
There is so much pain and misunderstandings in the lives of the 3 generations of women living under the same roof for the first time in a long time. Seeing the growth in all of their lives and the want to get help when needed left me feeling good when I finished the book. I have lost an adult son and 9 year old grandson in a car accident. The situation was different, an elderly person feel asleep driving, but the grief and anger felt like it was something the author was acquainted with. Sometimes you realize you need help but the things you try aren't the right fit. I am glad the character didn't give up. ... show more

  • Agile crafting
Woven together with deft experience there are many points of view to any series of events in a family. Making peace is difficult too and left unresolved...which is realistic.
