Description

He’s the hottest hockey player in the nation, and I just agreed to be his fake girlfriend. Theo Brooks is hard not to notice. With his coy smirk, rock-hard abs, and skilled agility on the ice, he’s the cockiest of all the jocks and, unfortunately for me, my new roommate. When Admissions mixes up my first and last name and I end up living in the male dorms, I feel my perfectly tied schedule loosening with every string Theo pulls. And he likes to pull every single one. It isn’t until I find out that my long-time boyfriend is sampling other girls that things get interesting. Theo proposes a solution to my problem—he helps me make my ex jealous, and I help him fend off the relentless puck bunnies that are doing nothing but distracting him from sealing his future with the best NHL team there is. So, we fake date. We kill two birds with one stone. The puck bunnies think he’s taken. My ex is regretting his poor choices. But the more Theo Brooks shows up by my side and places his hand around my waist, the more I realize that the lines we drew are blurring. This may have started out as a fake-dating scheme, but with each misleading kiss, we may both get more than we bargained for. Weak Side is a spicy fake dating/forced proximity college sports romance. It is a complete stand-alone. Read more

  • I liked it!
The story starts with some fun, chaotic tension between the characters due to their shared living situation, which made their journey from annoyance to friendship—and eventually something deeper—feel natural and engaging. It was a really enjoyable read with a great mix of humor and heart. I had a genuinely good time watching their relationship grow. ... show more

  • Dreamy
This is such a dreamy book, Claire and Theo are great characters. Their love story has a very natural feeling progression, and Theo is absolutely a catch! I love the way he falls for her and how supportive his team is of her. The way Theo is captivated by her art and the way he takes care of her is so sweet and endearing. The fun they have together and the way they appreciate each other as people, their drives and goals, how supportive they are of each other's lives, and how much Theo does to get her to see what a catch she is and why she should value herself and not settle for anyone who doesn't value her, even at the end when he thinks he's losing her. Now for the things that made this a 4 instead of a 5. 1. At the beginning of the book, on every other page Theo complains about puck bunnies, wanting them to leave him alone. On the in-between pages, we hear about how he is getting sucked off or having sex with them in his room every day and before every game. This makes ZERO sense, like of course they aren't going to leave you alone - you keep giving them what they want. 2. Renters aren't responsible for fixing damaged floors that they didn't damage. If a pipe bursts or something like that, causing water damage, that is the landlord's responsibility. I would have e overlooked this detail if it weren't a big plot point that came up several times. !!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!! 3. Everything about Claire's mom. Claire periodically says things like she and her mom are partners. Her mom is selfless, how great her mom is - but there are no memories or evidence of this. It would be ok if her mom wasn't a character in the book, but she plays a big role indirectly. She briefly asked Claire how she was doing ONCE. Everything else in that conversation and every other conversation we saw between them was about her problem and her demanding Claire send money. One other thing that could be considered as her trying to do something for Claire is trying to get the Dean to sleep with her to reduce Claire's tuition. Considering the repercussions of that with either decision he could make that's pretty stupid and since every interaction we have is her asking Claire for money or getting deeper in debt with Chad's parents, I think this wasn't doing something for Claire, it was all about making it so Claire would have more $$ to send to her mom. She told Claire her whole life that Claire's father left them because sports were more important. Why didn't Claire ever ask wtf they weren't getting child support? She spent all of Claire's life angry at jocks, bad-mouthing jocks, etc. Then we meet Tom, who had a professional hockey career but was in a car accident and was going to be a "cripple"...she left him the next day in the hospital because she didn't think she could take care of a kid and a "cripple". Part of me scoffs because yeah, right, this *itch just thinks her cash cow is gone (I think she was puck bunny!). If she was in love with him, then she still sucks. Either way, why change your name and not ask for child support? That whole thing just doesn't make sense. Then at the end, we're supposed to think that she's not a bad person, she's a nice mom, and that the "jocks suck", and "your father abandoned us" were just a harmless front and can be easily forgiven by Claire who has so many trust issues and insecurities as a result of these cruel lies...nah man....everything EVERYTHING about Claire's mom brings this book down...after typing it all up I'm tempted to lower it to a 3, but Theo, Claire, and their friends are so great I just can't. 4. The last scene with Chad was very disappointing, she's being nice to him, but it almost seems more like she's letting him down gently when she's saying "You don't love me", "you don't do XYZ to someone you love" etc etc...while all of that is true and can be said in righteous anger...the way it is written that emotion just doesn't come across. Also, why would she decide that saying that to Chad is more important than Theo getting the wrong idea? She could tell Chad to eff off while going after Theo, or heck, if she felt like she had to talk to Chad, then she could come back after straightening things out with Theo. I'm honestly not sure why she decided to deal with Chad first since her mom was already out from under the thumb of his family. 5. The epilogue. First, it does not make it clear at what point in time of Theo's career we are...the timing seems to indicate that he would be out of college and on the NHL team, the jersey she's wearing indicates it too, but something is said about him not being on the team yet. He is out on that team's ice, there are announcers and a national anthem, jumbo tron being used in the same manner as on a game, not a tryout, so I'm just not sure. She says she's got the best seats, no the 2nd best seats, having chosen not to get the best because she didn't want to take any more of Tom's money after he paid her tuition. It mentions how he is in the owner's box. Like....surely Tom would have pointed out that getting seats from him or joining him in the owner's box wouldn't cost him money. Either way, best or 2nd best if she's paying for them, how? I'd assume that actually, Theo would be getting her seats. It's the small things. I hope the critique doesn't make you skip this book because you absolutely must read it, this is a wonderful story, the characters are great, it's got some good spice to it, and the love is divine! My critique is more for the author, nothing is perfect and there are always things that can be improved so don't think that just because I have some negative feedback the story isn't worth your time fellow reader. ... show more

  • Quick Cute Read
Genre: Hockey Romance Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Heat: 🌶️ POV: Dual Burn: Slow Tropes: Hockey Romance, College Romance, Slow Burn, Fake Dating, Forced Proximity/Roommates Claire Bryant, our FMC, is a ballet dancer juggling a whirlwind of responsibilities—classes, rehearsals, waitressing, and navigating a complicated relationship. Just when her plate couldn’t seem fuller, a mix-up in the athletic department’s paperwork lands her in the male dorms. To make matters more chaotic, her new roommate is none other than campus hockey star Theo Brooks. Theo Brooks, our MMC, is the charming and popular hockey player with one clear goal for his senior year: stay focused on getting to the NHL and avoid distractions, especially puck bunnies. But his plans take a detour when he discovers that Claire’s boyfriend is cheating on her. Theo can’t let that slide, and suddenly, it’s game on. The banter and chemistry between Theo and Claire were spot-on! While some reviews criticize the fact that the fake dating trope doesn’t kick in until about halfway through the book or that both characters are initially involved with other people, I personally enjoyed these aspects. It felt like a refreshing departure from the typical storyline. Theo was everything I look for in a book boyfriend—protective, caring, and swoon-worthy. I finished this book in a day; it was such a quick, fun, and easy read. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the series! My only wish? A little more spice 🤭. If you’re looking for a lighthearted hockey romance with humor, chemistry, and a happy ending, I highly recommend this one! ... show more

  • Claire and Theo
3.5 ⭐️ 1 🌶️ Dual POV M/F No cheating OM drama This was my first SJ Sylvis book. It was cute, kinda slow, and not a lot of spice. I have read better enemies to lovers where you still feel the connection between the main characters, I did not feel it with these two. I mean the story was cute and they ended up “being a cute couple”, but I expected more. Their s*x scenes (only 2) were kinda boring and all you read about is Theo hooking up with other girls while they are “enemies” and focusing on his hockey. So when it comes time to start bringing their relationship together, you just can’t feel it because he never truly was interested in her- at least his dialogue didn’t say he was. Claire is okay. I liked her but also despised her pushover attitude as far as her Ex went. All in all, author is a great writer. It’s nice to read a book where there are no issues in grammar, the story doesn’t skip, and you actually know who is speaking. ... show more

  • Weak side turns to Strong Side!
This is my intro to SJ Sylvis, but I am quickly becoming a fan! I must check out the other books in this series and more by her. I loved everything about this story, from the meet-cute to the ending. There was a third quarter breakup, which I usually hate, but this one made you realize of how strong a love connection could be between the two main characters. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the ex boyfriend with his entitlement attitude. Claire wished him well when he actually finds someone he loves, but I wish him an STD for his actions. Claire and Theo were the real deal from the very beginning, and I hope we see glimpses of the in the other books in this series! Highly recommended!!! ... show more
