7/7 water proof update. Now that I've had it up for a while and weathered a few storms i would say it is not waterPROOF, rather it is water resistant. Like a tent, where the water pools it eventually leaks through. The ties sewn on the sides have stayed intacted even after several very windy days. I am still very pleased and would recommend this! Update: as you can see from the pics I've got it up and I'm loving it. The color is a golden color and because it is water proof (has a rubber treated feeling to the material) it is thick and does a very good job shading. We have only had a light rain so far and its has been water proof. I also treat all my outdoor fabrics with a uv and waterproofing solution but I really feel this would not have needed it. You will need to poke the puddles that form like you do when water collects on a tent roof. All in all I am very pleased and hight recommend! Previous review; I like the material, sturdy feeling without being super thick and stiff. It is winter here so I won't be installing to right now so I cannot attest to its waterproofness. I also plan on using waterproofing liquid on it that I use for all my outdoor materials. It is a bit shorter,15'8" than the advertised 16 ft. The company is really responsive. ... show more

This Pergola Canopy has these important claims: + 260 GSM + UPF50+ - 100% UV Blocking NOTE: It is not possible to have a UPF50+ rating and only 95% UV Blocking. In reality, after close inspection, I can not tell any differences between the Pergola Canopy brands that I have received and tested. I have created a sort of buying guide below with what I consider to be the 4 major considerations in priority order: 1) Ordering the correct size (important) 2) Pergola Canopy Corner Hardware 3) Pergola Canopy Fabric 4) Warranty *** Pergola Canopy sizing *** Pergola Canopy sizing is much simpler than Shade Sail sizing because it is not under tension. Do expect it to shrink if you do not secure it to the structure. Many sellers offer custom sizing of Pergola Canopy, there is a small cost added to custom sizes. It does not seem to be as much as a custom Shade Sail. *** Pergola Canopy Hardware *** There does not seem to be a difference between Pergola Canopy hardware. The end rods come in 1 foot lengths that screw together then insert into the end of the canopy. All the brands that were tested seemed to use the same hardware (Alion, Amgo, ColourTree, *** Shade Fabric *** Material choices vary for Shade Sail and Pergola Canopy fabrics; there are several important properties to be aware of to make an informed purchase: + GSM is Grams per Square Meter, and is how much material is in a unit area + 160 GSM is the lowest I have found, limited to waterproof pergola canopies + 200 GSM is lighter and has less material + 260 GSM is heavier and has more material + A higher GSM with a smaller UPF value may be overall thicker, which will last longer. + UPF is Ultraviolet (UV) Protection Factor + UPF is used to measure fabrics, such as shirts, hats and also sun shade fabric (sails, shades, pergolas). + SPF (sunscreen rating) and UPF (fabric rating) are not the same + SPF measures Solar Energy dose (research 'SPF fda.gov') + UPF measures UV light filtered (research 'UPF nlm.nih.gov') + UPF rating of 15 correspond to clothing that blocks 93.3% of UV + UPF rating of 30 blocks 96.7% UV + UPF rating of 50 blocks 98% UV + UPF rating of 50+ blocks more than 98% UV + In other words, if you burn easily, get UPF50+ which blocks at least 98%. + The higher the UPF, the darker it will be when using the same color fabric + A lighter color (tan or beige) can transmit more visible light than a darker color (brown or gray) and have the same or better UPF. + UV Blocking is almost always specified, and should correspond to the UPF (not always listed) + 100% is limited to waterproof fabrics + 98% UV Blocking should be the same as UPF50+ - 95% UV Blocking seems to be a typo on some of the brands out of China, I think they mean 98%. - Amgo products seem to have this incorrect rating. - if the 95% is correct, then the UPF ratings would be around UPF20. The standard material for Shade fabric is HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), which is just plastic, however is the most common plastic. Some products differentiate themselves by claiming to be made with Virgin HDPE. Love the cover. Extremely strong. Has faded a bit in the sun, but it truly does not let water through it...maybe a little too well. It fills up on the top with water when it rains. Great for shade and sun protection, though.

READ DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY. This cover would be fine if I still lived in California. But in Oregon, where it rains constantly in the fall winter, this has been the biggest waste of money. I wanted something waterproof so I could still sit outside in the rain, but this cover collects ENORMOUS pools of water in between the slats of the pergola and I have to push it out with a broom at least twice daily right now. The pools are so big they'd never evaporate in a single day, and as they sit there, they leak through the fabric. When I push it out the water splashes down forcefully and gets me soaked and the side of my house covered in mud. I wish I had saved the hundred bucks to put toward an actual proper rain proof pergola cover. When I messaged customer service, the only response was that I'd have to push it out or remove the cover. WHICH KIND OF DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF HAVING A COVER.. I thought bc it was advertised as waterproof it would be okay in normal not too heavy rains, but it's definitely not. This is a decent cover for protection from sun (if it's facing the right direction) and maybe light drizzles, but wholly impractical and practically useless for actual rain. ... show more

Overall the design is great, good quality with the exception of horrible color fade resistance. It has faded so bad that I cannot adjust the cover since the faded color shows. I expect to replace these yearly, not every 4 months. The design is great, it is waterproof and sun blocking is good. The color should last more than four months. ... show more

Very sturdy and beautiful in appearance holds water on top which makes it difficult to keep it from sagging but keeps you dry. I’ve had it only for A few months since spring and already faded from dark burgundy to pale burgundy almost pink big time. Disappointed
