Description

The EVDC300 delivers whole-room humidification driven by an Energy Smart DC motor. With more power than a standard Vornado, it delivers our whole-room humidity circulation using 90% less energy versus a comparable Vornado AC motor-driven humidifier. The minimalistic design features a clear, easy-fill 1-gallon tank that is simple to use and maintain, with a low-water indicator that shows when it’s time to refill. Customizable humidity settings paired with precise auto humidity control allow you to tailor the natural evaporation process, leaving a perfectly humidified space free from the white dust that mist leaves behind. The EVDC300 ensures a comfortable breathing environment with the peace of mind of a 5-year satisfaction and 10-year motor . • Among the best on the market but flawed
Size: EVDC500 - 2 gallon Style: Humidifier
UPDATE 3: It's now been 3 years since Vornado replaced my original defective tanks which were causing my units to leak. I've had no problems since. Upgrading the rating to 4 stars now that long term durability and reliability has been established. I also want to update the original review to note that I always use the eco mode now. I can't verify whether it uses less energy - but it's a lot quieter. UPDATE 2: My machine is no longer leaking after Vornado replaced all 4 tanks on my two machines. There needs to be no air inside for them to work properly, and once there's an air leak, they will drain themselves without stopping, causing the water leak. The plastic these tanks are made of is not strong enough to handle the weight when filled, so I expect this to happen again. I'm raising my rating for to 3 stars because of the excellent customer service, but the design is still flawed, so this will never get the 5 stars in my original review. Vornado said they will replace tanks indefinitely even past the the warranty, which tells me they're aware of the flaw. But at least they stand by the product. So if yours leaks, call for new tanks. I still like it despite all this. UPDATE: I purchased two of these in January 2018. As you can see below, I originally gave it a glowing 5 star review. That's now down to 2 stars. Why? Because I'm having the same leaking problem so many others are having within both units. It's happening to far too many people to be a random manufacturing defect. It's a design defect. I can no longer recommend this product until Vornado sorts this out. I rarely give 5 stars unless a product approaches perfection. This one does. After having had ultrasonic humidifiers, I can definitively say I'm not going back after owning this model. Evaporative is definitely the better technology. The ultrasonics will spew bacteria in your air unless you clean them daily. And they will leave white dust all over the place unless you exclusively use distilled water, which is expensive and impractical. Any evaporative model eliminates all that. Traditionally, the knock on the evaporative models has been they are loud and thus not appropriate for bedrooms. This model is whisper quiet on the low speed - you can barely hear anything. High speed is loud, but you only need to use that if it's been turned off and you want to raise the humidity as quickly as possible. It can operate most of the time on low and maintain your preferred humidity. This model is on a pricier side, but it's worth every penny given the superior features, design, and build quality compared to the competition. It includes a humidistat that has a setting range of 40-60% humidity. When it comes reaches your set level, it'll turn off and come back on again when needed. This is a mandatory feature in any humidifier in my opinion - and many cheap ones lack it. The electronic display is photosensitive and will darken as your room does, which is huge for us sleepers sensitive to light. The two 1 gallon tanks are easy to remove and fill. They won't fit in most sinks though. Either use your tub or a sink with a hand sprayer faucet. The tanks have a very subtle backlighting that will blink when both are empty. This feature is defeatable if it annoys you. Don't worry, you can't really see it in the dark. The best part is the DC motor for the fan. These are far more energy efficient and durable than the typical AC fan motor - as evidenced by the 10 year warranty you get on the motor. Lastly, it is easily comes apart for cleaning thanks to good design. Cons are few and really nitpicking more than true flaws. There's an eco button that supposedly provides better energy efficiency. From what I can tell, this is a dubious claim. It basically allows the fan to run in various speeds as needed beyond just high and low. But when my unit was off because the set humidity was reached, hitting the eco button resulted in the fan coming on and staying on - albeit at a speed slower than the normal low speed. I don't see how causing the fan to run when it otherwise wouldn't is more efficient. So I leave that feature off. My other issue is the lack of an on board hygrometer, which is a readout that tells you what the humidity in the room currently is. Finally, the fact that this requires two filter wicks means you have a consumable that incurres a lifetime recurring expense to operate this. They run about $13-$14 a pair and the manual states they'll last 6-8 weeks on average. That will add up over the years, and they can be tough to find. Two are included to get you started. In conclusion, I highly recommend this evaporative model over ultrasonics. No white dust + no bacteria in the air = yes please. And I recommend this Vornado because it's high quality. It's relatively expensive, but you get what you pay for. They have a cheaper 1 gallon model with the DC motor, the EVDC300. They also have some even cheaper models with AC motors and varying water tank capacities if you want to save more. I'll conclude with a piece of advice: if you use an evaporative unit, get some bacteriostat solution to add to the water. It'll keep the unit and water clear of microorganisms and will greatly extend the life of the filter wicks beyond the estimated 8 weeks. I consider its use mandatory. ... show more

  • Pretty quiet. Effective for a home office. Internal hygrometer is kind of an idiot, though.
Size: EVDC300 - 1 gallon Style: Humidifier
I use the 1L version to maintain humidity in my home office during these cold months, mostly to help my guitars out. The fan noise is certainly audible, but to me it equates more to white noise than a distraction. The major downside is that the internal hygrometer does not actually know how humid the room is. My target humidity is 40-50%. To keep it there, I need to set this unit's target humidity to 55%. When it shuts off, the other hygrometers around the room read 45, 47, 50. So, this humidifier thinks the room is 5-10 points more humid than it actually is. I'm coming from an ultrasonic that was right in sync with the other hygrometers. Set it to 45% and it was keeping them at right around 45%. Maybe it has to do with how quickly humidity spreads from an ultrasonic vs an evaporative like this one. At any rate, this is something worth knowing if you go with this humidifier. It's wrong about the humidity levels of the room, but it's consistently wrong, so you can still make it useful. ... show more

  • The best humidifier I've used, but it's only as good as the availability and quality of the wicks.
Size: EVDC500 - 2 gallon Style: Humidifier
Edit 10/9/2018 ----------------------- Stock up on wicks while you can!!!!!!! The wicks finally were in stock on Amazon and in stores like Bed Bath & Beyond starting in the spring of 2018. The new wicks MD1-0034 seem stable to me - as stable as the original wicks that came with the unit. I'm am happy again. I am going to buy up to a dozen wicks to have stock for the winter (I own two EVDC500's). If it's anything like last winter they were out of stock for at least 4 months. ------Original Review Below------ This review will stay at 1 star until I can get my hands on replacement wick filters that are the same quality as the wicks that came with the humidifier (MD1-0034). First and foremost, the wicks are sold out everywhere, online and in-store, including Vornado's website. This has been the case for many weeks. Secondly, the reviews for the replacement wicks are complaining that they are thinner than the originals that came in the factory box, and disintegrate after a few weeks of use. I'm worried that the out-of-stock issue could be due to some sort of recall due to defective manufacturing or bad engineering decision making. OK now for the EVDC500 review. This is hands down the best humidifier I've ever used. I bought two EVDC500's at the end of November 2017, one for a guitar room, the other for my bedroom. For a relative humidity (RH) baseline, I live in the northeast of USA, in eastern PA. EVDC500 in the guitar room: I require 45% humidity in a 12x12 guitar "room". This guitar room is currently a corner of a large finished basement. 2 walls are drywall, the other 2 are plastic sheeting that I hung to create a humidity controlled space. There are no HVAC vents or returns in this space. With the EVDC500 set at 50%, I maintain a constant 45-50% RH in the room with ease (I monitor with a hygrometer). I only have to fill the water every few days. This makes me extremely happy as I worry about Winter RH and shrinking wood. Without a humidifier, RH in the space would drop below 25% in the winter time. EVDC500 in 8x10 bedroom: The bedroom is on the 2nd floor and is connected to a larger room. The door to the room remains slightly closed at all times(about a few inches opened. There is airflow from the adjacent room). There are 2 HVAC vents and 1 return in the bedroom. With the EVDC500 set to 50% RH, it runs almost constantly and the water must be completely filled daily. I do not have a hygrometer in the bedroom currently so I won't report on RH (maybe I will test and update the review later). Having seen the EVDC500 truly work in the guitar room, I use the 2nd one in the bedroom for the usual winter RH benefits. Wick Maintenance: -I use standard tap water with no additives. You'll notice that the wick turns yellow with hard mineral deposits towards the upper outer edge. -I flip and turn the wicks every few days to rotate the mineral deposits. -Once a week I soak the wicks in warm water and vinegar for about an hour. I gently press the wicks to help release the minerals. I rinse them and let dry. Then I return the wicks to the EVDC500. I am extremely careful during the whole process. -I disinfect the base and water jugs every few weeks as directed in the manual. Wick status: After 2 months of constant use, the wicks from the bedroom unit, which uses more water than the guitar room, are semi-hard and yellow even after soaking. The edges that come in contact with the inside of unit have disintegrated somewhat, but for the most part, the wicks are physically stable. Before the last soaking the wicks were very dark-yellow and had a few brown spots. I feel that I need to replace these wicks ASAP but I can't find any in stock. The guitar rooms wicks are more white than the bedroom wicks and are not as hard. I think I can get a few more months out of these with continual maintenance. Wick worries: From what I said in the beginning, there are many bad reviews for the replacement wicks. From what I've read, they are thinner and tend to disintegrate in 2-3 weeks. Final conclusion: Once I get my hands on replacements wicks, if they do not last as long as the factory originals I will throw the EVDC500's away and continue my search for the best humidifier. ... show more
