I just opened and installed this system about 2 hours ago. First impression: WOAH. That’s exactly what I wanted when spending this much money on a sound system! The design is very sleek and modern. The satellites have some decent weight to them and look good. The subwoofer is the biggest and heaviest that I have ever seen with a sound bar. The sub looks like it would fit in well with any hardwired true 5.1 or 5.2 system. Set up was easy as expected. Overall sound quality was very impressive from the start. The audio was well balanced with lows mids and highs. The sub was very strong but controllable with the smart cast app/remote. Seriously this system was impressive at first play. Much more impressive than the NAKAMICHI 7.2 DTS-X system. The nakamichi lacked a lot in the mid range and the subs were buzzy with certain content. This is not the case with the vizio so far. The Dolby ATMOS works with my Xbox one without any issues so far. It’s hard to describe atmos with words so I’d suggest doing your own research on that. The height speakers in this system are VERY noticeable and ad a very cool touch. I love them. The cons: This system isn’t very user friendly. The remote is kind of hard to navigate. The app makes it easier but the only display that the sound bar has is a series of LED dots that are hard to interpret without the user guide. There isn’t a solid way to see what format you are currently in ie: atmos dts, or DD. Those features aren’t a deal breaker in my opinion. Maybe it can be updated to give an on screen menu with vizio TVs later on. DTS-X: this isn’t supported by this sound bar. Support isn’t noted anywhere in the user guide, box, or website. However, on Facebook, the vizio account responded to a comment on one of the pictures of this system and said that the sound bar DOES support DTSX, idk who to believe. Surly DTSX support can be added via firmware update later on, fingers crossed. I will update this review as I go along. So far it’s a 5 star!! Edit: 12/2/2018, I have looked back and reviewed my correspondance with the vizio people on facebook They actually didn't confirm the use of actual DTS-X. They said real DTS and DTS virtual X. I have also confirmed that on the system, it would not play in DTS X. Otherwise, The system has continued to impress in terms of sound quality. I have had a few instances where the system would shut off unexpectedly. This would require me to turn it back on manually. Once the system is on again all of the previous settings are restored and things are back to normal. I have not contacted vizio support yet, I am waiting for either a firmware update or the system to become more frequent with its power downs, whichever comes first. 1/10/19 UPDATE: The system continues to play very well with my xbox one as my audio source. The previously mentioned technical issues have continued to happen to me. They have not become more or less frequent. I would guess 1 out of every 15-20 times the system is powered on through the TVs CEC control, I will experience the issue. The screen may go black, the sound will cut, then the picture will suddenly re appear and the sound will be back to where it was. I think about 2 times i have lost CEC connectivity between the tv and the system and ive had to un plug the bar and re plug it back in for it to re connect. These issues are too infrequent for me to stop enjoying the system. The sound continues to satisfy me with all types of content. Overall, with a couple of hiccups, the system continues to play clear and strong. It is the most convenient, affordable and impressive surround soundbar that I have yet come across.

I needed (well, wanted) surround sound in our family room, but the physical setup would not allow for a true rig with receiver, individually wired center & L/R speakers, etc. My tv is on the Mantel Mount (another product I highly recommend), which extends down to eye level from above the (unused) fireplace. I previously had Vizio's 38" 3.1 soundbar attached, but immediately wanted to upgrade to the Atmos bar once I heard about it over a year ago; I can't do a proper wired center channel and front speakers with such a configuration, so having the soundbar coupled with rear speakers wired into the wireless subwoofer was the ideal solution for me (I did have to buy the soundbar extenders for the mount, as it is so much wider than the bar before). Even though I knew I wanted the 5.1.4, I waited and read the few reviews that were out there, which solidified my decision; I waited for Cyber Monday (missing the Black Friday price) and pulled the trigger. It has been one of the best "big" purchases I've made in electronics. Most people do not have surround sound in their homes, so don't know what they're missing; or, if they do, may not have things connected properly, hence aren't getting the most out of their system. For someone looking for a solid and impressive system, without breaking the bank or going full "home theater" this is an excellent option. Obviously the selling point is the fact that this supports Atmos, so you'll need to know how to actually achieve that, because too many people assume they will get the full effect via ARC (they won't). The biggest complaint I've seen about the bar is there's only 1 HDMI input, which is a fair point, but there are workarounds. My setup is a little complicated, but I like having the option of not having to use the system, so split my signals. I have cable going straight into the TV and use the ARC connection for surround (cable doesn't support any high-end audio, so I don't need anything beyond ARC support there). I also have a Roku Ultra and Panasonic 4k Blu Ray player, which I obviously want to get the best audio from. The Panasonic player comes with a separate "audio out", which helped tremendously; Roku made things a bit more complicated. After searching and searching and searching, I finally arrived at the HDFury AVR Key 18Gbps | HDMI Audio Extractor | 4K HDR Splitter; it splits the audio and video signal from my Roku the way the Panasonic does and has been a life safer. Next, the audio signal from the Panasonic and Roku go to an HDMI selector, which runs to the soundbar, and their video signals go to a separate selector that runs to the TV--a bit robust, I know, but it works and has not given me any headaches (both selectors are from ROOFull, which looks like many other brands, but has been the most solid in terms of performance for me and fully supports 4k and Atmos). The only problem is my wife has no clue how to select anything (but I see that as a "plus"!). Once you make sure audio is set to "auto" on any player/streaming device, you're good to go--watching the little light go green for "Atmos" or red for "DTS" is awesome...and boy, do you truly hear it all around you. Even basic 5.1 Dolby surround from the cable box sounds more encompassing when the EQ is set to "movie". The bar being 46" really does help with L, center, R channel separation--the "movement" across channels becomes more apparent. In terms of Atmos, when it's kicked in, it shines. Fair warning, even though some movies have Atmos tracks, it does not always mean you're going to be looking up, thinking something is above you; it's not ALWAYS an "up and down" movement, but most definitely creates a "fuller" soundscape that is tough to beat. Additionally, the subwoofer has really solid bass that keeps everything tight. Pros: -Awesome sound quality (regardless of price) -Straight forward use (after going through remote once) -Simplifies a surround setup for the average family room -Solid construction Cons: -Bluetooth connection can be spotty (not a huge deal--not really why I have the system) -Sometimes you need to cycle through the inputs for the signal to kick in -Only 1 HDMI input (issue if you have more than one high-end audio source that ARC won't support, but can be dealt with as mentioned above) -Won't work with vaulted ceilings (this is true of any up-firing speakers, and is not exclusive to this system) I would highly recommend this system to anyone--you won't be disappointed.

The app only works 1/3 of the time and will crash the entire Soundbar connection if you change too many settings too quickly. Once it's crashed even unplugging it from power often times wont reset the connection. It can take up to a day for it to decide to connect with the app again. It's especially annoying because depending on if it's playing ATMOS content or not I need to significantly tweak the EQ or turn on Night Mode because the neighbors will complain. It's possible with the remote, but the remote is very difficult to use. There should be presets built into the remote to make it usable, but there are no preset functions. The soundbar will freak out and literally become unusable if you plug/unplug something. I plugged in a laptop and the lights began to cycle on the soundbar. Quickly the LEDs would light up one after another like a meter and bounce from a full bar of lights to all off. This has happened twice with my own bar and once with a friend with the 5.1.2 bar during the first hour of use. When it's doing this it will become completely unresponsive. Two of the times it only required a factory reset to fix. The 5.1.2 bar was unrecoverable until forcing the firmware to reinstall itself which is a 30 minute ordeal. I was on the current firmware with the latest breakage, and it has happened across the previous two versions of firmware on each of the previous two occurrences. The voice channel will frequently cut out entirely and require the sound stream to be reset by either restarting the bar or changing the content enough (restarting the app or streaming device, etc) to force the stream to renegotiate the format. This is the most common complaint I see but honestly not nearly the biggest inconvenience for me. It's not especially difficult to get it working again in this case and only rarely happens when the audio format changes. I only use a single Apple TV connected directly to the bar and have Eco mode off. I do not encounter the issues of the bar turning off spontaneously or cutting out. Far and away the worst experience for me comes from never knowing if I mess with plugging in new devices or changing the cabling that it will totally break and become unusable until I force a reset or reinstall the firmware. It's rare but its a giant pain, especially having to pair the bar with the app again after it's reset. I feel like the app was working pretty well until it broke the latest time and it's been nearly unusable since then. All things said, it sounds great. With a little tuning to your preferences it is easily the best for the price. It impressed friends until it broke on movie night when someone wanted to play something off their laptop and wasn't working again until everyone decided to leave. Embarrassing. UPDATE 4/29/2020 2 Stars -> 4 Stars: The soundbar is still a nuisance. The app frequently doesn't connect, and I still (rarely) have to completely unplug it and wait before replugging to get the sound to work. Overall though, over the past few months I've been less likely to run into problems. Based purely on the fact the soundbar sounds amazing and I don't use it with anything other than an apple TV 4K with two 42gbps HDMI cables, I'm willing to up my rating. If your needs are simple and you know the dance to not be frustrated with it, this sound bar can be a really good product for you. It's either Stockholm Syndrome or I've made peace with it.

This soundbar has been an adventure. From receiving the huge and heavy box, through some glitches with the smartcast app, to setup and listening. I've had mine for a couple months now, so here's my impressions. The first thing you'll notice (once you get the box through your door) is just how big the subwoofer is. It's HUGE. The soundbar is longer than most, but you'd almost miss it in the box buried under the sub and rear speakers. The rear satellites are fairly diminutive - although they have a decent heft they still feel almost like toys after lugging the sub into place. Installation is fairly simple - plug the soundbar into your TV and a power outlet; plug the subwoofer into power and plug the rear satellites into the subwoofer via their included cables. All of the cables are neatly bundled - kudos to Vizio for including nearly every cable you could possibly need (RCA, 3.5mm, optical, HDMI). The rear satellite cables are nicely done with double RCA ends and color coding. The only drawback I noticed is that because the cables are so nicely finished, you may have difficulty hiding them (I have some speaker stands that have a pathway for speaker wire, but the Vizio cables can't use this because the ends are permanently attached.) I had some issues getting the unit to pair with the smartcast app - I was getting duplicates from google home and the Vizio app kept forgetting and requiring to be re-paired with the speakers. I ended up solving this with a factory reset of the soundbar and by removing the google home app and removing and re-installing the smartcast app on my phone. So far, so good. I've even managed to re-install the google home app without triggering any duplicates or issues. For some reason the Vizio app also requires 'high-accuracy' location permissions - seems unnecessary as most other apps can locate things on wifi with just basic location services. If not for these issues, I would have given five stars for installation ease. Once everything was hooked up and set up, I settled in for some viewing/listening. One of the first things I noticed was just how 'boomy' the subwoofer was - I like my bass, but I feel like it tends to cut in and be noticeable on certain shows or movies - anything with continuous bass is fine (action scenes, etc.) but shows with dialog or sporadic ambiance that get low enough to kick in the sub can make the crossover stand out. I dealt with this by using the volume controls to knock the subwoofer only down in volume by -2 to -3. This seems to help reduce the crossover 'breathiness' and the sub still has plenty of power to make any low-end sound effects stand out. (For what it's worth - I thought my brothers 5.1 Vizio system had the same boomy-sub type issue - so if you like other Vizio soundbars, you'll probably be fine with this) Other issues I've had with the audio include a 'morse-code' faint beeping sound coming from the rear height speakers - it comes and goes a bit, but as near as I can tell this is caused by having the unit in the Movie mode. Changing it to the Direct profile seems to get rid of the beeping and just leaves a faint static sound. I've also noticed the sound of the power supply in the main soundbar - again, very faint (must be within a couple feet of the soundbar) and honestly it's most noticeable when the unit is off. The supply seems to go into some kind of hiccup mode that makes some extra noise. Finally - even though it's hooked up to my Vizio P65-F1 TV, the display on the TV for the audio-system volume has the soundbar at max volume when the TV says the audio system is at volume 39. And on the low-end, it can be kinda twitchy - usually we've got it around 8 or 9, but at night when trying to be quiet it can get down to 5 or 6 and the difference between 4,5,or 6 can be quite noticeable. I wish Vizio could adjust the firmware for the TV or Soundbar to help with this volume control. The biggest issue, however - the soundbar randomly powers off. Every so often (maybe once every couple of days) the soundbar will just turn off in the middle of a show or movie. I don't think it's a CEC issue (the soundbar is attached to a Vizio TV - so even if it is, it's still Vizio's issue). I can turn the soundbar back on and everything continues just fine, but it's still kind of annoying to need to grab the remote in the middle of a movie after you realize the audio just disappeared. And this isn't an issue of someone sitting on the remote - I was in the kitchen today with nobody else in the house and thought my movie turned off because the audio just stopped. Here's the kicker - before you say I got a dud unit, I did contact Vizio support and they managed to get a replacement unit sent out to me. I've had it a couple of days, and it behaves exactly like the first one. 'Morse-code' Movie mode, boomy sub, soundbar power supply noise, low-numbered volume scaling, and just today, another random power off. But it sure does sound great once you turn up the volume. I really, really want to like this system. It sounds great while listening to TV and Movies (I haven't done much music - but a few 'cast' sessions on Pandora sounded good to me) and getting some of the ATMOS demos make it sound great considering how little setup there is involved. I'm sitting here debating whether I should keep it and hope Vizio comes up with some kind of firmware fix for the power-off issue, or wondering if I can just deal with it happening every so often. Hopefully these aren't systemic issues, because if you can get this thing at a decent discount off the list price, I think it provides a great value. Update 2022: Sound bar still has issues where it locks up and won't output sound, despite showing input switching in the app, etc. Could be great but glitchy firmware means I spend almost as much time troubleshooting sound issues and unplugging the bar for hard reset (soft reset doesn't cut it) as I do listening to content.

Changing my review to 5 stars: How it sounds to you, to me, it's all relative. In my small 15x15 room these speakers and sub-woofer sounds absolutely incredible, far better for movies and music than the expensive bookshelf speakers that replaces. Atmos movies are amazing, I didn't knew what I was missing. Currently there is no soundbar in the market with a better subwoofer than this one Vizio includes. I haven't experienced any subwoofer or rear speakers disconnecting issues. The remote is absolutely horrible, but I knew that. I was thinking, well they have a good app, but the app is also terrible. So many steps in order to get to the soundbar controls. The app is more oriented to empty your packets with paid content. When I try to change some sound parameters, either don't allow me to change it or the little bars jump all over the place like possessed, so the app is not very helpful in order to tweak the sound for different movies etc. Communication between the app and the soundbar is very slow and faulty. Very frustrating. The soundbar keeps "updating" itself, but hey there is no new updates available. Many people having this issue at this time. Not a big deal, it happens quickly and you can continue listening. Sometimes I can't shut the soundbar off, neither with the remote or soundbar buttons. Same applies when trying to turn it on. It gets fixed with a power cycle. A real shame than Vizio can't offer a decent full feature remote. Update few days later after purchase: I was giving a 1 star rate. Changing to 5 because finally I was able to find a way to watch high quality 4K MKV files with Dolby Atmos, or DTS HD sound. I was new to the soundbar world, and to make the soundbar work properly with Windows 10 was a real challenge. This is what it worked for me: Make sure you have the "Dolby Access app" installed. Open the app and set it up with your soundbar. Under "speaker set up" select "Dolby Atmos for Home Theater". The are many audio codecs for Windows; I use which I believe to be the best, "K-Lite Codec Pack", the "Mega" version. Install "K-Lite Codec Pack" and then go to "Codec Tweak Tool", and click into "Audio Output". Then under "Audio Decoder Output" select "same as input". Then under "Audio Bitstreaming To External Device" select "Enabled (= receiver decodes audio)". Once you selected that, more options will open and then select "HDMI connection", and under "Bitstreaming Formats" click and select everything. Make sure that you also install Windows Media Player Classic and you're done. Windows Media Player Classic is included with K-Lite Codec Pack, and it is very necessary because it will be the only way you have to play each and every single 4K file with Dolby Atmos and DTS HD without a single problem. Prior this configuration I was having video and audio issues while playing these large 4K video files, but now everything is perfect. And of course don't expect Vizio to help you with this, that's not their job, neither they know. You can easily know if you getting Atmos by seeing a green light blinking in the soundbar. Whenever you get DTS HD the light will be red. Those lights will stay on for only few seconds. I can Imagine that you would not have any issues if you're just playing your content with a streaming device or bluray player. Another thing I want to mention. Bigger doesn't mean better. If you want to watch movies or videos, choose a soundbar or home theater system. Do not make the same mistake I did by listening to audiophile people; those people will always give you the worst piece of advice, because all they care is about the size and "quality" of the speakers (it's like a creepy cult)... Is like they don't understand than the source of audio is way more important. I bought a very expensive pair of speakers under their recommendation, and they didn't sounded bad, but all I was getting was stereo sound, and not the best source of audio from the optical cable from the TV. Having switched to this system was the best decision ever. The speakers can be small, but they must be of high quality because they sound really really good, and of course now I can hear all these high quality surround sound formats. This soundbar sounds great with music too. You can use it at low volume without changing any setting, and still sounds very good.

Dislikes: Frequency from soundbar is lacking (Moved from Vizio 54 inch that voices sounded much, much better on. Voices sound tinny and that's the majority of the sound you get from movies and TV) Over powered subwoofer compared to soundbar. Subwoofer drastically overpowers front speakers. Smart cast took a long time to setup and a call to Vizio tech support, which is overseas. I spelled out my name 3 times, read off the model number and was told this unit didn't support wifi... I was later transferred to a tier 2 support that was more helpful, but still limited due to the newness of the product. Like: Atmos option for specific content Strength of subwoofer Surround sound quality. I may return this product, but I'm sure it'll cost a fortune in return shipping cost. I preferred the overall sound of my old Vizio 54 inch 5.1 system and am very frustrated with my customer service experience. Dialogue just sounds too poor. It's a shame because I was really excited about this products release and have been happy with Vizio in the past.

Topline: Great room filling sound, but to avoid distortion and dropped connections, you have to use ethernet cables on every device in your console to avoid interference--to which the soundbar is obscenely susceptible. Out of box and with a bunch of wireless components nearby, you'll be banging your head against a wall. The sound quality *is* fantastic, but the documentation is either wrong, misleading, or incomplete. (I recommend you look at the manuals available on the website to see what I mean.) Additionally, the Vizio SmartCast app is incredibly finicky, particularly when it comes to recognizing your device. Which wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that the Vizio remotes are just difficult to use (why don't they backlight the VERY DARK, VERY SMALL LCD screen on them?). Finally, the Subwoofer is huge. HUGE. Doublecheck its measurements to make sure you can accommodate it in your space. (And make sure you have a power outlet near your couch.) INTERFERENCE/SURROUND DISTORTED/DROPPED: The problem with the SB46514-F6 is that the signal it sends to the subwoofer is prone to interference. I know this because it was plagued with "popping" distortion, disappearing voices, and dropped surround. Attempting to reproduce the effect was hit-or-miss. Sometimes I just needed to return to a menu and then re-start a video. Sometimes I needed to re-pair the subwoofer (a ridiculously laborious process). But the repair wouldn't last: Soon, the popping and dropping resurfaced. On one forum, a user mentioned marginal improvement by *turning the subwoofer around* so its rear faced the soundbar (and away from the power strip it was close to). I tried it, and indeed, the sound cut out less frequently--it seems the receiving circuitry on the subwoofer is in the back. So, I deactivated the wireless on pretty much all of my peripherals. I wired all the connections in the media console--from my TV, to my PS4, to my AppleTV--and deactivated all wifi components except the router. With that, I achieved seamless, uninterrupted surround sound. I won't attempt a teardown of the soundbar to get into the details, but my theory is that the soundbar concentrates its antennae all together on the left side, away from the power supply to avoid electrical interference. But it has several antennae for a few purposes. You're bound to get interference. It appears to have Bluetooth, some variety of NFC antenna, a wifi antenna, and another radio antenna that carries the signal to the subwoofer. That's four, in one small enclosure. If it's under your wifi activated tv, and near your wifi activated (and bluetooth remote-controlled) apple tv, and all by your router, that's just a lot of potential for interference. DOCUMENTATION: The quick start guide is a decent walkthrough, and the manual has some useful tips, but the language is ambiguous about whether you can get ATMOS sound from any device routed through your TV, or if it needs to be plugged directly into your soundbar's ARC HDMI port. (My understanding: You need to be plugged directly into the ARC HDMI port, and it may work with a hub that passes 4k through as well.) Does HDMI-CEC need to be on? Yes! Kind of. But additional documentation is maddeningly hard to find: The distortion issue seems to be a crisis for Vizio, to the point they've attempted to roll out new firmware (enjoy updating it using the SmartCast app, which is awful in this venture). But nowhere do they acknowledge the reality of interference. REMOTE: Hard to see. No backlight. Dark screen. SMARTCAST APP: Takes a number of different approaches to identifying your soundbar, insists on putting your soundbar on wifi at first, requires you to place your phone on it for some reason, sometimes doesn't detect it, and once set up, doesn't detect the soundbar in subsequent uses. (Even after deleting and going through the process again.) Its most consistent reliability comes when the soundbar is hardwired into the router. Additionally, if you want to check settings, it *still* requires you to request them through the app, and then the speaker... says them to you. Out loud. SOUND: It's great. Really and truly: If you can get it to work properly, you'll love it, and your neighbors will hate you. My only complaint sound wise is that the sound doesn't seem to go very low before totally cutting out.

I'd like to start this review off by trying to answer a lot of questions that many just like myself had before purchase. The Echogear mounts come with the needed screw to mount the Vizio speakers to their mount. They mount easily and hold the speakers just fine. Make sure to adjust them then mount as they are very tight when adjusting. Satellite Speaker Mounts: Echogear Universal Speaker Wall & Ceiling Mount Pair - Tilt & Swivel Without Tools - Easy to Install Indoors & Outdoors - Works with Vizio, Sony, Bose & More The next thing that was a huge concern was getting RCA cables that fit in the RCA plug on the back of the sub and the satellite speakers. Took me three sets before I found some that worked. The Amazon Basics and the Media bridge ones do not work for Vizio, they are crooked and do not plug all the way in cause their end connector is too fat. One pic included showing. (KabelDirekt RCAs work) For the KabelDirekt RCAs plug one side in and ensure your heights are on doing the Vizio speaker-test, then plug the other side in. Your speaker-test should produce rear speaker left and rear speaker right as well as rear height left and rear height right if not your cables are mismatched. Once put in correctly and all speakers are connected make sure you're on "Movie" and that surround slider is on. If for any reason you're not getting full surround from all speakers to slide the surround sound slider off and back on and that will reset at least it did for me. Within the Audio settings of the app, surround balance is not what you adjust for the rear volume. You want to adjust "Surround Volume" to turn the rear satellite speakers up. They get plenty loud. I only have mine on 4 and they go to 10. RCA Cables that will replace the proprietary Vizio Satellite speaker cables for lengths longer than 26' are KabelDirekt. I needed a good 50’. The reason I couldn’t use the provided Vizio satellite speaker RCAs. Combining the KabelDirekt gave me the distance I needed, and the speakers sound great no issues. Had to buy 4 of these: RCA Extension Cable, Cord (25 feet short, 1 RCA Female to 1 RCA Male, Subwoofer, Mono, Audio Video Cable, Digital & Analogue, Double Shielded, Pro Series) by KabelDirekt Had to buy two of these: KabelDirekt RCA Stereo Cable, Cord (25 feet Long, Dual 2 x RCA Male to 2 x RCA Male Audio Cable, Digital & Analogue, Double-Shielded, Pro Series) Supports (Amplifiers, AV Receivers, Hi-Fi)
