The media could not be loaded. Easy to assemble if your familiar with working with wood. Otherwise I recommend you get smaller screws and use them rather than the nails they provide. Some of the frames were split or cracked. The brood box and super are far from square and symmetrical with each other. The wood is rather nice and overall the hive is beautiful....besides the manufacturer not taking pride in their craftsmanship. I am able to assemble with nails although expect the wood to split on some frame pieces...be careful. My biggest complaint is the un square and non symmetrical boxes. I am not nit picking either the overhang is nearly an inch. This is almost a gap. I find this to be very problematic with temperature and pest issues to be more significant threats. Spend the extra money and get better craftsmanship or build the box yourself. ... show more

First of all, this is a kit. If you are looking for a beehive that is already assembled, there are others out there at a higher price. Overall this is a good product at a good price, but in order to assemble the kit without tearing your hair out, you need either some experience with woodworking or much better instructions. Here is the bottom line, and then I'll provide additional details which augment the instructions: Pros: Good value, well packaged, no damage in shipping, materials (except for nails) are solid, full kit with a queen excluder Cons: Instructions are inadequate, nails are the wrong size and type It took me 2-3 hours to put the kit together including some time getting familiar with the parts. The instructions are horrible. There are three QR codes on the front page and I thought perhaps that would lead to an instructional video, but that was not the case; they were just links to Amazon, Instagram and Facebook pages about the company with no information on the beehive. The box assembly: This seemed to be the most challenging and the one that may reviewers complained about. When I first tried to assemble the boxes it looked like they didn't fit and then I discovered that if you need to fiddle with the dovetail joints and keep the boards level with each other and then they fit perfectly. You need to align them and then slide one into the other (see the first picture). Once I put the boxes together I got out the nails and noticed a problem. The nails provided are the wrong size 1". You can see from the second picture that the nails are not long enough to go through the dovetail joints into the box and they also have heads so they stick out slightly. I happened to have a box of 3D finish nails that were 1 1/4" and they worked great (see the third picture). They do not have a head, so they are flush with the wood and make it easier to sand and paint. Other reviewers used screws which is ok, but I had the nails so I used them. There was no mention of this in the instructions but if you pre-drill holes for the nails they will go in easily. For my nails a 1/16" drill bit worked well. I also decided to use glue, and again I had some Elmer's glue. If I wanted to make a trip to the store I would have bought wood glue, but this all-purpose glue worked fine. As for the placement of the nails, their instructions show nails in all the dovetails, but you really don't need to do that. Two or three nails are fine. Frame Assembly: Here the instructions were actually helpful and mentioned using glue. I also pre-drilled the nail holes for the frames and just used one nail rather than the two they suggested on the top bar. So, to do the assembly, you will need some 1 1/4" finish nails, wood glue and a 1/16" drill bit and things will go fine. I will be painting the outside of the hive and I don't expect to have any issues with the wood not weathering well. If you don't paint the hive you will have problems in a year or so. You can also use oil or varnish, but paint works very well. Good luck and make sure to get in touch with your local beekeeping group for tips on beekeeping in your area. ... show more

I'm very pleased with the hive. The wood is seemingly good quality cedar. The dove-tails fit together securely. Assembly was quick and simple enough for this unskilled person. There were some issues with the description as the hive was described as an "8 frame" and I received a"10 Frame" hive with only 8 frames per box. The wood used is clearly cedar and has that pleasant cedar smell. There are very few knots and none appear at the ends or edges. I've never assembled a hive before and I've little experience with assembling wood craft projects. The instructions were poor but sufficient to get the job done. The instructions show hive boxes pre-drilled for nails, however the hive box parts were not pre-drilled for nails and no nails of adequate length we're provided for use on the hive body boxes. I believe that the nails provides were intended for assembling the frames NOT the hive bodies. I also believe that the hive bodies were intended to be glued at the dove-tailed joints without nails. The lack of pre-drilled nail holes was fortuitous as I was using a nail gun. Again, I believe the hive boxes could be securely and squarely glued without nails while using a "square". The shipped item was not exactly as described.. Like others, I received 10 frame hive boxes shipped with 8 frames for each box. I consider this another fortuitous bonus.. I will simply add 2 additional frames per hive body. Others may not be happy with a 10 frame box with 8 frames. Many who order an 8 frame hive box are doing so due to weight or space management issues. ... show more

Value is determined by what a customer is willing to pay. Even though this is the only beehive box I’ve ever put together, I’m assuming I can get better value from another company. Once completed, the box as a whole looks nice and seems structurally functional, however the poor directions, that’s only achieved by using wood glue (not included), drilling pilot holes for the nails (not in directions) or else wood will split, and using a square and screws to secure the outer box. The dovetail joints are always a great choice for durability but many of mine arrived chipped and I will have to use an outdoor caulk to fill in the gaps because currently I can see through it. ... show more

Update - strong smell is cedar wood, not chemical like I was originally concerned about. Joints are really nice and snug but it does leave weird large gaps in places (bees will fill the gaps) overall for the money I’m happy and we would buy again for the price. This is my first impression and I will update once I set it up. Very important - Frames are not waxed, you will need to wax these yourself. Very simple to do - check out Kamon Reynolds on Youtube on how he does it. Box weighs 50+ pounds and is packed well. I will say that there is a very strong smell to the wood, like a chemical smell which I hope will air out. I will be applying propolis and wax to the inside of the brood box and supers to make it feel more lived in but as of right now it’s very strong smelling. ... show more
