  • Good extractor for home beekeeping
Style: Manual Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I love this little honey extractor. It's very convenient to have my own extractor rather than borrowing one from my beekeeping club. It works great and I was able to successfully harvest my first batch of honey with it. Great quality and very sturdy. Keep the box and use it to store the extractor when not in use. -------- Process: wash extractor and allowed to air dry use a sharp serrated bread knife warmed in hot water to cut the cappings off comb (collect cappings in a stainless bowl and strain the honey out later with a metal mesh strainer) extract two frames at a time starting the rotation slowly flip the frames once before gradually increasing speed to (protect the comb from blowing out) flip the frames again until the comb is clear give the empty comb frames back to the bees for them to refill strain honey through a double mesh strainer and use a stainless bowl or bucket to catch the honey ladle honey into sterilized glass jars using a canning funnel cover jars with clean sterilized lids Last steps: admire jars of honey and eat whole spoonfuls of honey! appreciate the bees and their hard work :-) ---------- It's tough to get the last bit of honey out of this extractor, but by tilting the extractor and using a silicon cooking paddle it was possible to remove most of the honey. The clear lid is a tight fit, but I got used to snapping it into place pretty quickly. The handle needed to be tightened a few times while I was using it and I don't exactly love the handle design- but, hey it still works. Clean up was simple and I washed it out on my deck using the hose, a rag, and some enviro-friendly dish soap. A bottle brush designed for cleaning water bottles helped to scrub out the bottom. ... show more

  • Must have for new-bees
Style: Manual Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I am a novice beekeeper but after one season of manually trying to harvest honey, I gave up and decided to get an extractor. This was easy to put together, able to secure to solid ground to be more sturdy and works great. I spun it as fast as I could and let the handle go until it slowed down a couple times and then flipped the frames and did it again and they were perfectly drained. In fact, it took me more time to scrape the wax capping off my frames then it took to spin it! Amazing. As for bottling the honey, I think it is a two person job. I used a canning funnel to help with the mess and the honey flows quickly so in order to stop it, I should have had someone to close the latch and hold it while switching jars (I managed to do it myself but it was a bit sticky. The last pint or two were removed by me tilting the extractor and having my son catch which was not too big of a hassle. As far as cleaning, it was easy and simple. I saved hours and tons of hassle with this extractor. Would definitely buy it again!! ... show more

  • Overall good - easy to use - cleaned easily - the honey gate nut broke.
Style: Manual Size: 3 Frame Rack
The unit is large, larger than I expected. The tank comes with the standard protective sticky plastic still on it, that's good, it protects against scratches, but it did take 20 minutes to get it all off. The legs, the side that goes against the tank, are sharp - sanded those a little to take off the edge. The gears make a little noise, more in reverse, but seem to be in good shape. The ball bearing in the bottom is stainless or chromed, perfectly smooth. The honey gate was a problem - the hold through the tank is not flattened, so there is a curve and the gate back/nut are flat - it takes some amount of pressure (hand only) to get the gate and O-Ring to press against the metal tank completely, to make a good seal. 24 hours later the nut was laying in the bottom of the tank, it had cracked. I went in search of replacements, thinking it might be a standard size, but it's not - no hardware store had ANYTHING that would match the thread diameter. I ended up using a hose clamp around the nut to maintain enough pressure to screw it back together - I will contact them about a replacement nut on Monday. It appears to be a good unit for the money, but, not flattening the metal around the honey-gate opening is a design/quality flaw - I can see more plastic honey-gate nuts breaking. ... show more

  • Worth the money
Style: Manual Size: 3 Frame Rack
When I purchased it there were only a few. But I will say that for the price it has been pretty good. I like the design with the cone shaped bottom so that most of the honey will come out without tipping it. I mounted mine on a base that made it sit up high enough that a bucket i will fit under the spout, plus gave me something to stand on while I cranked it. Overall I can't find any complaints. I have about outgrown it and am considering getting a larger one that is electric, but if you don't have that many hives or are fairly new at it then this is about as good of a product as you can ask for. But this is a great extractor. It is built sturdy and the cage to hold the frames is very heavy. I was quite surprised to see that it was as good of quality as it was. I would suggest to anchor it down to something, there were concrete anchors included in the box to use but I mounted it to a plywood platform which if I stand on it holds it down pretty good. A 5 gallon bucket will fit under the honey gate but if you have a double screen on top of it then it won't clear and you can't tip it to get the last of the honey out of the gate either with it like that. So, I chose to put it on a platform to elevate it and I can also tip it. The bottom is cone shaped instead of flat which impressed me because from what I could tell most of them were flat. There is an edge where they punch the hole for the honey gate that you might want to debur with a half round file or some embry cloth. Be very careful because the stainless steel slivers will get you good and got me a couple times. Just something you have dealing with stainless. I washed it out in the tub before assembling it and used Dawn dish soap to remove any oils or whatever before using it. All in all I am very satisfied with it. ... show more

  • Good quality extractor at a great price
Style: Manual Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I'm a small scale beekeeper and this was our first honey harvest. I decided to use an extractor because I wanted to leave the wax on the frames to save my girls some work next year. We had 3 medium supers full of honey to harvest. Got this because it was made in USA and they seemed to have good customer service. It was easy to assemble and worked great at extracting. Our experience was that you had to get it spinning super fast to get all the honey out of the frames. We collected 107 pounds from 27 frames in about 3 hours. Note- it will wobble but we used the predrilled holes in the feet of the stand legs to attach to wooden blocks then steadied the extractor as we spun it. ... show more

  • Good Extractor for Our First harvest
Style: Manual Size: 3 Frame Rack
Completed first harvest. This extractor performed well; the drain spout cover sealed well, didn't notice sharp edges as other reviews did - except the plexiglass covers' edges could be considered to have an edge, plexiglass protective film remnants remained under screwheads which is just a small, unprofessional detail. The crank assembly was greased, though sparsely and the bottom cage ball bearing had what looked like axle grease. I cleaned these out and used a quality, food-based grease which worked very well. The legs felt a little flimsy and were welded sufficiently to the base. I did bolt the legs to a 2x4 wood base which helped with stability. The extractor included bolts for this. The extractor cleaned out easily by leaving out in the sun and using a strong hose spray. Residual wax sprayed out easily the second time after a short soak. ... show more

  • Good unit.
Style: Manual Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
It worked well. I spun off 5 gallons. Drum is nice thick sheet metal, legs a little less so, but adaquate; horizontal braces on legs might help stabolize. I attached the feet to plywood, but still need to hold it down as it rocks a bit. Bearing is raised, but not enough to avoid being submerged in honey. Gate is raised a bit off the bottom edge, so must tip the barrel to get out the last few quarts (so, leave a flat edge if you mount on a sheet of plywood). Must push handle past the rod a bit to line up indentation for screw--and tighten with a wrench to avoid loosening. Some sharp spots on cages so be careful when cleaning. Would sure be nice if the clear top were on hindges. Super fast shipping. Excellent customer service. Good solid unit. ... show more

  • More cheap low grade manufacutring.
Style: Manual Size: 3 Frame Rack
Picked this up from UPS today. I like that it is made in America, that being said it makes me wonder about our manufacturing capabilities here in the states. I can tell right off the bat that the welding is being done by hand because it looks like it was done by a 10th grade shop class. No offense to the up and coming welders, but for the money you put out for this it definitely could have been better. I could also see where there were problems in the past and they took the easy way out instead of re-engineering something better. Fro example, there must have been a problem with the pivot point at the bottom not turning smoothly. Instead of designing a sealed bearing as a pivot point they chose to put a small ball bearing in the bottom for the cage to rotate on top of. Good thing I looked in the bucket before I started washing it as there was no mention of this loose bearing just rolling around the bottom of the bucket. The honey valve sits about 3/4 - 1 inch up from the bottom which will cause honey to be left in the bottom and result in a loss of honey. Unless you want to figure out how to put blocks under the legs to prop it up to one side. Here's a thought, how about engineering a funnel that creates a funnel down to a stainless steel valve that has been welded into place. They do it in brewing, maybe take some pointers from that industry. The cage that holds the frames, while they rotate ok, the craftsmanship in welding the cages together again looks like an amateur did it. Definitely makes me wonder who exactly they hire to work in this factory (NOT!). Then there is the definite cost savings and cutting corners where ever they can. While the whole thing is made out of stainless steel, the bolts that they give you to put the thing together with are not stainless steel. Just some cheap crap bolts that will rust at the first sign of any kind of moisture. Guess they did not plan on a person washing this. So there you have it. Is it worth the money? It will probably work. For how long is the question? I would say that there is probably better out there, but my take is that they are all made by the same company and sold under different names. In other words there isn't much of a choice, so unless you make your own your stuck with this crap. ... show more
