It does what it's supposed to. Recently got a composter so this has come in handy for the garden and landscaping. It's solid enough from what I see. Holding up just fine and spreading compost as expected. Does take up space, so bear that in mind. I don't know that I'd get one of these unless I was going to be spreading peat moss or compost on the regular. It's done a good job though and spreads it much more evenly and quicker than other methods I've tried. Recommended ... show more

This compost spreader needs assembly. I just followed the instructions. It is a straightforward process. All tools are included, but one is better off using pro tools than included disposable tools. The spreader looks good. I like the combination of green and black, but no ball bearing is included, so moving it is difficult. It's sturdy, and all parts are made of metal. One needs to put some effort into using it. It's hard work to spread the compost in a big area. This spreader assists me in doing a faster and more consistent job. This arrives completely disassembled with everything needed to build it. The instructions are clear enough to follow, and all of the hardware was included. Parts of my yard get a lot of erosion from rainfall run-off, so I need to add topsoil on a pretty regular basis. This "hopper" is much better at spreading an even layer of dirt vs. my old method of dumping and manual raking. Obviously this is another lawn gadget that takes up space when not in use, so if you only occasionally spread dirt it wouldn't be worth having. This thing requires FULL assembly, start to finish. There are lots of nuts/bolts/washers and they aren't easy to get into place and properly tightened. I grabbed some of my own tools to make it easier and still had steps where I asked my spouse for their extra pair of hands. Instructions were not clear that the solid circular ends of the hopper actually go inside the perforated sides (see photo); we initially thought it went the other way around and were really struggling to line up the holes for the nuts. If this spreader had come mostly assembled (needing to attach the handle alone, for example), then I would be fine with the hundred buck investment. But considering that I had to build this thing from scratch like a factory worker, I feel I got cheated a bit. NOTE ABOUT SOIL PARTICLE SIZE: the perforations in the hopper are not very big, so the type of soil you load may or may not come through completely. Notice in the photo I am showing the "leftover" stuff from a couple of bags of the bargain-basement topsoil. The bags of better potting-soil stuff came through pretty well. But NO WAY this hopper would disperse mulch or soils that are very "chunky." ... show more
