This tester does exactly what it claims. The red laser is strong enough to punch through long runs and still be visible in daylight, which makes tracing fibers and spotting breaks/bends straightforward. I’ve used it on both patch cables and multi-kilometer lines, and it handled both without issue. The pen-style body is aluminum rather than plastic, which feels solid in hand and gives it some durability against the inevitable drop. The clicky top power button is easy to use even when juggling connectors, and the beam has both constant and pulse modes depending on how you want to track a run. Battery life has been good so far — still running on the original set after multiple tests. Compatibility is another plus. Out of the box it slots into SC, FC, and LC connectors without adapters, which covers most of what I run into. For a quick sanity check when something isn’t passing light or to confirm continuity during a run, it’s a tool that saves time and guesswork. At this price point, there isn’t much more to ask for. Works well. The sheath it comes with is flimsy and doesn't hold the adapter that you will need when switching from lc to sc or st fiber connectors. You will probably just want to carry two different patch cables with you and only utilize the larger hole this comes with by default. It has a plastic hinge cover over the lens rather than a rubber cap. The plastic of the cover seems lightweight and brittle so I assume I will break it at some point. I think I prefer other designs that are more rectangle and able to stand up without holding it or laying it sideways when testing. ... show more

    • Very bright fault finder, a glance and you'll see spots for hours!

I was not allowed to take photos of the break that I found with this pen but when I did find it I had a coworker hook up his 10mw tester and this one definitely made the break brighter. That helps in brightly lit environments like server rooms and some factory settings. It also feels nicer than my coworkers that cost about $10 more, that being said the switch on this thing feels like the one on those flashlights kids got in the 90's at like skate city or for Halloween. The on light could be brighter it is very hard to see from more than a few feet away in a server room. The body and fiber connector feel very solid being metal and the plastic top and flip cap feel pretty good too it's just that switch that feels cheap. These are super super bright UNCOLLIMATED laser for fiber testing and will not produce a "laser dot" at any distance but that does NOT mean it is not a "good" laser, it's just uncollimated, do NOT look at the beam it is MUCH brighter than a standard laser pointer. It is made to show through the inner and outer coverings of fiber cables shining out from the broken fiber within. ... show more

This is a standard Visual Fault Locator (VFL). It's the same layout and basic features that all the others at work have. It works as you would expect of a VFL. That's all good news because any of our techs can use it, and it's similar to what they are used to. This VFL stands out from the rest of them because it's silver, not black, making it easy to identify. And it's a good 10mW more powerful than most others. This lets me identify and check cables all the way across town instead of just a few blocks away! Additionally, it doesn't timeout and turn off the laser after a few minutes. So I can plug it in at the head end, hop in the car, drive out to the remote end, and still see the laser light and verify the cable! It's nice that it comes with an adapter, which works great for LC, For SC/APC and SC/UPC you don't need the adapter; just plug it right in. It also comes with a nylon case, which is nice, and keeps it from getting beaten up in the toolbox. It takes AA batteries, which can be purchased and replaced in the field without much hassle. Overall, this is one of the nicest VFLs I've had the pleasure of using. ... show more

A Visual Fault Indicator is a very simple tool and this one works perfectly. The build quality is a little off. The aluminum is very finely machined and very high quality. The plastic parts, however, are misaligned and look and feel very cheap. It is easy to use which is good because you get a slip of paper for instructions. Twinkle/glint is flashing and it works good enough to find faults. It is not clear how to change out the included ceramic core. I do like that it is very lightweight so it doesn’t add weight to my bag for a seldom used tool. If I was a full time low voltage tech and not a systems support tech/end user tech and would need it regularly I might have considered a more expensive one. It does include the LC adapter. I figure if I wear it out I will upgrade but this should be fine for my tool bag. It is the size of small flashlight that uses 2x AA batteries. I think the value is medium. If it cost 20% less I would give it one more star. ... show more

I have to troubleshoot fiber optics about one a month and I generally end up using a VFL to either locate damage in a panel or light up a connector. This is a replacement of one I lost. It is very bright and I have used it in a link over 7 miles to find a port. The cover on this does seem like it will break off like my last one. I think they are all like that though.
