cannot beat the quality you get for this price point period. its heavy and has a great build quality to it. a little long for a 16mm but fine. the aperture ring gets bumped then you cant change it from the camera until its set back. thats my only gripe. other than that its sharp and quick.

I bought this lens shortly before visiting a flower festival, so I had a good opportunity to use this lens with my Sony A6500. The picture quality is pretty good. I also took various pictures of objects in my room ranging from f/1.2 to f/10. This gives you an idea of what the bokeh looks like at f/1.2 as well as what the theoretical max image quality looks like at f/10 and ISO 100. Premium feeling lens with an option to adjust the aperture on the lens instead of only the camera. A minimum focusing distance of 11 in (28cm) lets you get fairly close to objects, but it is NOT a macro lens. My main gripe with the lens is the auto focus. I understand that the lens is big and bulky. That's to be expected for f/1.2 and having premium construction. However, with the size and weight compromise, you should expect better performance. The image quality may be nice, but the auto focus hunts often even in well to moderately lit locations. I didn't bother to test in dark areas because the auto focus is already struggling with sufficient light. YouTube videos mentioned the focus hunting happening often when shooting videos, but I also see it happening for pictures. I'm kind of tempted to return this lens, but I'm holding out hope that Viltrox improves the auto focus in a future firmware update. To understand where I'm coming from, I already have quite a few lenses for my A6500. The Sony 11mm f/1.8 has by far the best auto focus that I've used. I would give it a 10/10 since I haven't used anything better. Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 would be a 9/10. Sigma 18-50mm would be 8/10. This Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 would be 7/10. As a bulky prime lens, I think this lens should be at least on par with the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 (a zoom lens with better minimum focusing distance). If you need good auto focus, this lens isn’t for you. If you’re ok with dealing with occasional focus hunting or shoot mainly manual, this lens might be worth considering. My absolute favorite lens. i'm sticking to Viltrox permanently! There's no reason not to ❤️🔥 I have absolutely no issues while working, and have no sacrifices on quality. It doesn't feel cheap, and most importantly it WORKS well.

I really wanted to love this lens because I need a second 85mm. While I did get some great images from this 85mm, there were some things that I couldn't get my mind off while using it and reviewing the images. The good: this lens has great bokeh and it is reasonably sharp for the value. There are many instances where this lens creates images that are just as good as Sony GM 85mm (which I also own). The autofocus was also good. Too many people are complaining about the weight of the lens. I think the size and weight make it feel worth the money. Tamron lenses feel like toys to me, but this feels like good tech to me. I can confirm that skin renders a "creamy" look. Something about the blues and magentas in this lens come out with a cool dramatic look that could only be described as creamy. I was a little surprised when youtubers kept using that phrasing but I get it now. It makes the Viltrox brand stand out from other third party competition. The bad: I was shocked to receive a box that was dented/bent. I have purchased several lenses from Amazon (either from Amazon or through Amazon with a third party) and I have never received a beat up box. There were a few moments where I was shooting supper fast @1/8,000, f2.8-4.0 and the auto focus wouldn't catch just right as I was clicking the shutter button. There were a few misses on the auto focus and maybe that is because there is no image stabilization and I was just moving a little bit too much while shooting. Here is why I am returning it: This lens was sold to me on Amazon but through another entity that sells on Amazon. What I did find odd was that the warranty card did not have the stamp from the seller and Vilxtrox writes on the warranty card that it isn't valid unless the stamp is present. So, if I did have troubles, I wouldn't want to get the work around with the warranty that I saw mentioned on a reddit thread. While I can appreciate the auto focus, the auto focus motor keeps rocking back and forth (audibly). All the youtube video reviews I saw on this lens made a note about it and said that it was normal. I cannot help but be completely aware of it when I am shooting. It makes me double-think my hand movements. I find myself paying attention to the gear more than my model/participants. If Viltrox could get that rocking sound to stop being present in an updated hardware version, I would gladly purchase and own it. I wouldn't care if the lens was bigger or smaller, but that sound is really hard for me to ignore while I am at a photoshoot. I would totally recommend this Viltrox over Sony's native 85mm lens (the one that isn't a GM). Really solid color and a great tool to help a younger photographer level up their portraits. ... show more
