I've been on Lathes now for 40 years, including professional fabrication for custom staircases. I have a wonderful set up but my son just got a free lathe and needed tools so until he gets experience I figured these would be a good starter set. That they are with 1x important note: As mentioned these need to be sharpened before use. Seriously! the tools have grind grooves and FAR from sharp, on a lathe that is dangerous! I have a Tormek and self sharpen everything in my shop so getting these ready for use is not a problem, but these are not a light grind & polish, these need to be fully ground and shaped and then honed to be a quality tool..... On the good side, if you do that these are wonderful actually, HSS steel took well and polished to a mirror finish. In regard to edge retention, I'll need to see after use, this is just an initial purchase review. If there are any issues I'll update, but for now these are a solid buy if you get them ready for use first...

I'll start by saying that I did end up being successful with these tools, after learning how to sharpen them correctly, and in one case, re-grinding the profile of one of the spindle gouges. These tools are not a great fit for beginners. The profile of the chisels provided doesn't really match what's used by most woodturners, so it would be difficult to follow along with a Youtube series or something. I ended up getting them to work for me, but it was more effort than I would hope for from a "ready to use" set. It's missing a "spindle roughing gouge," which is a large tool with a semicircular, deep flute and a flat profile. (I reground the larger of the spindle gouges, the one with the 45deg angle, to have a flat profile like this.) The detail spindle gouge (the really skinny one) works quite well after regrinding to a fingernail profile (I think having to regrind these from the factory is pretty normal, so I don't really have a complaint here). But my biggest complaint is that I don't think these are actually HSS. They go dull super, super quickly with use, so I'm having to sharpen them quite often. It's okay for me, I have a small shop, this is just for hobby, but it's pretty annoying to have to sharpen multiple times for one larger piece. Do yourself a favor and buy a spindle roughing gouge, detail spindle gouge, parting tool, and skew chisel from a reputable manufacturer. 8 sounds like a lot, but a couple of these tools are redundant (I don't need two sizes of skew chisel, for example). If you want to do bowls, this set doesn't have any of the things you need for bowls.

These arrived nicely packaged, correctly sharpened and ready to use. They are well made, comfortable to hold and worthy of being included in any beginner wood turner's kit. That said, they're worthy of a seasoned wood turner's collection if value is a factor.
