I was looking for an additional bowl gouge for my lathe. Found this one and thought I'd give it a try. It says it's ready to go out out of the box, which it seemed to be. It seemed to have a really sharp edge on it. Even if it wasn't ready to go out of the box, it's not a big issue, because you have to constantly sharpen these anyway. As a maker in general, my hobbies jump around a bit, so I'm not a super experienced woodturner but I know that some of the tools I started with are well past the point they should be replaced, or as I've been wanting to try some larger turning projects, some longer tools. When I saw this Cryo treated HSS bowl gouge available, I decided to give it a shot. Right off the bat, this was sharp enough to work on a purpleheart bowl blank I wanted to turn. Not only was it sharp, but it also stayed sharp. I've turned enough that I know it's worth touching up the edge but this needed much less sharpening than some of my other entry-level turning tools not to mention the extra leverage available with the full length of the tool. I know the prices for good turning tools can add up pretty quickly, and at $65 these seem to be pretty competitive with some of the other intermediate-level brands out there so I know I'm going to consider more of UF-SHARP's offerings when I look at upgrading some more of my turning equipment ... show more
