If you were a pro, you wouldn't be looking at this machine or reading this review - so this review is for us: the non-professionals that need this machine once or twice a year. The TL;DR answer for you is: buy it, and deal with its quirks for the price. But read on if you want to know WHY. My house has a septic system with a run of about 100 ft. down a hill to the tanks. Over the 35 years since the house was built, this 4" pipe has developed a couple of spots where tree roots have infiltrated, and no matter how clean I get the pipe, eventually I'll have another clog somewhere. Until now, that meant a trip to the Despot to rent a machine for 4 hours, at about $70 a pop all-in. It was always a stressful event, as I didn't know if I could find and fix the clog in the 4 hours, minus the travel and unloading/loading time. At least a couple times, an elusive clog resulted in a full-day rental for substantially more $$$. If you're thinking I'm slow at this, remember I admitted I'm not a pro plumber. This latest clog pushed me over the edge. I have grown tired of the rental trips, hauling that heavy machine back and forth in my truck... and this time, with my truck out of commission, the transportation fell to the wife's Lexus SUV. She said something like "no poo in my vehicle" (Amazon forbids the use of her exact words) and we settled on purchasing this unit. My requirements were for a machine with a 75' long, 1/2" cable, and minimal cost. This no-frills unit filled the bill, and was cheaper than similar units at the various brick and mortar stores. It has the necessary items like a footswitch and GFCI plug. It comes with a pair of gloves, but other reviewers dissed them as inappropriate for this use, and I believe they're right... the faux leather looks like it could get grabbed by the cable while rotating, possibly resulting in a few ripped-off fingers. I don't KNOW this to be the case, but I didn't want to take any chances, and I had a pair of gloves that the Despot gave me on a previous rental. If you don't have any, you should check out Amazon for an appropriate pair (everyone seems to stress LEATHER). So... it arrived in mint condition - well packed. I immediately took it to the cleanout port on my 4" pipe, and encountered the first problem: this is a top-heavy unit with very short "back legs". My cleanout is right on the edge of a hill, and in order to get the cable aligned with the pipe, the machine had to straddle the pipe and sit tilted back due to the hill. Nope, the machine just wanted to tip backwards from the weight of the motor. Half my time augering was spent trying to keep stabilizing boards in place under the back legs, with the little black rubber caps coming off constantly. And beyond that, this is a heavy machine and you're going to want to have wheels back there to help moving it. I know I will eventually use pipe or boards to somehow build up those back legs, for future ease of use and transport. Once I got it settled in place as well as I could, I tested the GFCI (nice unit) and started it up (switch set to clockwise, foot pedal depressed). It rumbled to life and rotated appropriately. I started with the basic coil head, cleverly hung on a handy wire rack below the motor (along with an Allen wrench to make the attachment to the cable). Feeding the cable went well but I'm still quite awkward about trying to use my foot on the footswitch, while kneeling down on the ground to feed the cable. I need to watch some pros doing this to see what I'm doing wrong. I hit the clog and did get some trickle flow, but it was going to take a cutter to bust the clog. So I started retracting the cable... and hit the second, somewhat major problem: the end of the cable is secured to the back of the drum, RIGHT in the way of where the cable feeds back inside. As I pushed the cable back inside, it would catch on that cable end, and not go out to the edge of the drum as you'd expect it to. I know this is hard to follow, but you'll know what I mean when you try it. It seems that the end of the cable should have been secured either at the top of the drum or in the center, where it would have been out of the way of the cable you're trying to push inside. You'll encounter this snag on every revolution of the cable inside the drum. Yes, you can jockey the cable a bit and work around it, but it's annoying. I am going to see if I can drill a new mount hole, either near the center or the top of the drum, to avoid this snag. I used the "C" cutter bit on the next try, and it tore up the clog and fixed my problem... for now. So, with a couple of annoyances that I attribute to being a low-cost item, it got the job done, and I'm happy. NOW I have to find a place to store it until the next time it's needed!     • Missing a critical part
I was trying to figure out why this kept binding. Then it would randomly catch not really on something in the pipe but enough friction to tangle up the cable inside and would have to stop the machine, untangle it. Several times I'd have to pull all the cable out of the basket and refill it. I Though it might have been wound in there wrong the wrong way and tried winding the other way and that just made it dangerous and worse. The problem is it's missing a lock on the basket to stop twisting the cable in the basket. If you are going to get one then I would suggest getting the one with the lock screw and feed lever. You'll notice the rental units without the feed have a some kind of screw to lock the cablenin place where you can pull it into the drain then when you have an obstruction, lock the screw, start the motoe and let it drive into the obstruction and when you see the cable seem to run freely the stop, feed more cable and repeat until the pipe is clean. Also I realized with this 1/2 cable after a certain length it was dry and just grabbed and ripped the gloves. Another time the cable in the cage lossened up as I was just letting it try to clear anything that might be left and cable forced its way out starting a loop that by the time I let go of the foot switch twisted grabbing the glove in the twist and tried to rip it off. For the safety of this machine a locking clamp needs to be added to the nose of the cage. Also the two bladed starting cutter basically stops working the moment it makes contact with toilet paper. I would say the spade bit did the best yet that even stopped at the same place 3/8" hand auger got the last time line got blocked. I would say with a way to lock the cable this could be really good but I didn't want to risk drilling and taping a hole then finding it was a bad cable. I did notice although the cable seems to lay in the cage when freshly wound that when out it has a lot of slight kinks. I might have to rent a larger one or buy one with the drive mechanism. This is also kind of heavy for it to have no wheels and if you have it outside in grass or dirt it will move around on you. Also, the switch is labeled CW and CCW instead of forward and Reverse so make sure when you start it the basket moves in the direction of the arrow. For me if it was more than about 12-16" from the hole then you might have issues with it trying to twist on you. I can see why a 3/4" or 1" cable is more favorable if you have an actual obstruction. ... show more

    • Ok I guess. It works.
The media could not be loaded. It works, Came with the belt off. It was Pain getting it back on. It was a 2 person job. After I tightened up everything that was loose I noticed the top wing nut that holds the housing in place that covers the belt pulley was broken (the plastic was broken not the nut). But that’s no big deal. The air switch worked abut after about 15 seconds. Not minutes BUT SECONDS the motor was hot to the touch. I guess for something made in China it works ok. It will burn out quickly so go slow on your jobs and let it cool off. The blockage will still be there. The red paint job is nice. I’m going to put wheels on it to make transporting it easier. Make sure you clean the snake and apply WD40 or something else to prevent cheap Chinese metal from rusting. If you ever bought ANYTHING from Harbor Freights you already know what I’m talking about. It is open faced so don’t get anything stuck in there while it’s running. Fingers will be broken! (Unless the motor burns out). Got one use out of it. Cable got garbled up when I pushed it back in. Then it would not come back out. Sold it on marketplace for 175. Get the auto feed one folks. This was a pain ... show more

    • Strong easy to use and enough for tough blockages.
It took out a very hard clog in the waste water system. I was going to get the model with the aito-feed, but the ms usl feed gives you more control when navigating the turns in the system. I'll tackle roots in my mainline this spring. I don't think it will have a problem.
