  • The Vantrue N4 Pro S is essential driving equipment. You need this.
I recently purchased the Vantrue N4 Pro S 4K three channel dash cam as an upgrade to my seven year old Vantrue N2 Pro Uber Dual Dash Cam from 2018. While the old unit was still working perfectly, I felt the technology, resolution, and camera chip sets have all greatly improved in the past 7+ years. Also, the addition of hardwired rearview cameras in the newest high end dash cameras on the market convinced me it was time for a change. I’ve now had the N4 Pro S installed for about a month and here are my qualified observations of Vantrue‘s newest and greatest dash cam: Unboxing. The unit comes in very nice packaging with a very detailed and thorough and readable owners manual, although personally, I never did anything more than scan through the manual. Typical male behavior. The main unit is compact, heavy and very solid with a rubber exterior. The primary camera is a very large 40 mm main frontward facing camera using a 4K Sony Starvis chip set. The rearward facing cabin camera is adjustable up and down and has a very wide field of view without distortion. The built-in IR night lighting also produces very clear videos of your passenger cabin. The main unit is secured into a windshield mount using 3M double-sided tape. Power is supplied through the beefy windshield mount unit. The remote rearview camera is very small measuring roughly 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” and can be mounted either externally near the license plate, etc. or internally, which is how I installed it. The rearview camera is water rated for outside placement. Everything is very high-quality and as I said earlier, I’ve been using Vantrue dash cams for about seven years now so I can attest to their quality and durability. Be advised that the N4 Pro S comes with a cigarette lighter power plug as standard equipment with a USB C plug on the end that goes into the cigarette lighter so you can plug in your phone or other accessories. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DASH CAM DOES NOT COME WITH A MICRO SD CARD. Vantrue says you can use up to a 1TB microSD card but a smaller card is more than adequate. I picked up a high-quality 500 GB micro SD card on Amazon for about 40 bucks. Installation was very easy, basically involving hiding the wires along the top edge of the windshield and fishing them down to a power source along the passenger side A pillar. I did not buy the optional hardwire kit because I don’t have a need for the 24/7 parking monitoring which is built into the unit as my car resides in a garage. For the few times I am parked on the street or in a parking lot it’s easy for me to just turn this function on/off as needed. I found my old unit had an early version of this parking feature had a tendency to drain my battery, so I learned to pull the power plug if the car was going to be garaged for any length of time. The new N4 Pro S has a newer feature that prevents the battery from going below a user set minimum battery voltage to prevent dead batteries. As I live in Park City Utah, it can get pretty cold here and I don’t like risking having enough juice to start my van. If your car is going in parking lots for extended periods or spends overnights in lots or on-street parking, I would strongly suggest getting the hardwire kit and utilizing the parking monitor feature. Vantrue sells a 40 mm adjustable polarizing lens filter for the main camera which can greatly reduce sun glare. So far, I haven’t found sun glare to be a problem and I live in a very sunny high mountain desert environment. If we ever get any snow, I may rethink the need for the lens filter. The small form factor of the N4 Pro S allowed me to mount the main unit directly below the rearview mirror mount which gives it a clear interior view for the cabin camera and a centerline view of the road ahead. I usually set the camera to turn off the onboard monitor after 30 seconds to keep the camera from distracting me from the road. Running the wire for the rear view camera in my 2015 Honda Odyssey was also pretty straightforward, running it between the trim and the headliner from the front passenger side A-pillar all the way to the rear tailgate pillar. I decided to mount the camera inside the rear window, which even with a limousine tint provides excellent resolution, clarity, brightness, and nighttime vision which is simply amazing due to the Sony Starvis chip sets. The rearview camera came with more than enough cable to run it to the rear of my minivan, but I would think that it has more than enough length for a Suburban or Expedition. Setup. There are four function buttons on the bottom of the main camera unit which are easily identifiable by touch. All of the functions are very intuitive and set up took me about 10 minutes without ever needing to refer to the owners manual. There is also a large orange button on the left side of the main unit which is an emergency button which when pressed will archive the video that immediately proceeded the pressing of the button preserving accident footage if necessary. I have my camera set to five minute loop recording. I also prefer to disable the interior microphone as this could possibly be used against me in court if I’m ever accused of being at fault. If I was a professional driver or Uber/Lyft driver, I would think this would always be on. The N4 Pro S has a neat new feature that uses an algorithm to identify license plates with exceptional clarity over previous units, even ones with 4K resolution. This can be key evidence if ever needed for a hit-and-run, etc.. As for the price, Vantrue markets the N4 Pro S for $380 but I found a discount which brought the price down to just under $300 including shipping. That makes the unit very cost competitive with other 3 channel dash cams IMO. Vantrue’s products and accessories for the N4 Pro S such as the 40mm polarized lens filter and hardwire kit can be purchased directly from their website or from Amazon in the Vantrue store. The Vantrue N4 Pro S is essential driving equipment in my opinion. You need this. ... show more

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Dash Cam – Easy Setup and Awesome Clarity
I’ve been using the N4 Pro S dash cam for a bit now and I’m really happy with it. Setup was super easy, everything connected smoothly, and the app made it simple to get going. Quick tip: make sure you like the camera angles before sticking on the adhesive, especially for the rear and cabin cams. Once it’s on, it’s not coming off easily, so take a minute to line things up just right. The video quality has gotten way better than what I was using before. The triple STARVIS 2 sensors really make a difference. License plates are crisp even at night or when the sun is bright. The 4K, 1080P, 2.5K setup captures everything clearly which is perfect for driving daily or doing Uber. I like that you can switch to just Front & Rear (4K & 2.5K) mode when you don’t need cabin recording. It runs cooler and records longer which is nice. The rear camera also holds up well in all weather and gives really clear video. Parking mode has been surprisingly useful, it starts recording a few seconds before something happens which is great for catching anything around the car when it’s parked. Knowing all three cameras stay active 24/7 gives some extra peace of mind. The app updates are quick, and sharing videos to my phone only takes a few seconds. Overall, it feels like this dash cam was made for people who drive a lot, commuters, rideshare drivers, road trip lovers, anyone who just wants solid protection on the road. The 18 month warranty and helpful support are also a nice bonus. Final Thoughts: ✔ Very easy to set up ✔ Video quality is excellent day and night ✔ Double-check camera positions before sticking it on ✔ Parking mode works great ✔ Would make a great gift too ... show more

  • mostly very nice camera aside from few small insignificant nuances
Mostly very nice dashcam. Only thing a bit annoying about it is any small bump (like speed bump or uneven road) it makes the sound that its locking the video footage, thinking its an accident. Not sure if there is a way to turn it off or not, haven't looked yet. Also for some reason the camera view mode on display sometimes resets for some reason. Otherwise its decent shape, has display, takes up to 1TB of microsd, the image quality seems fairly decent, and fairly easy to check footage via phone. Mostly recommend it. ... show more

  • Quality
I’m extremely disappointed with this Vantrue dash camera. The rear camera and interior camera quality are very poor and absolutely do not match the high price of this product. The front camera quality is also below average, which is unacceptable for a premium-priced dash cam. The biggest issue is overheating. In sunny or hot weather, the camera randomly shuts down and stops recording completely. This makes the dash cam unreliable when it’s needed most. A dash camera should work consistently in normal summer temperatures, especially at this price point. Overall, the video quality, reliability, and heat resistance are far below expectations. I would not recommend this product to anyone looking for a dependable dash cam. ... show more

  • Major Upgrade from My Previous Vantrue Cam
I upgraded from my trusty Vantrue E2, which I’ve used for years and loved for its front and rear coverage. This new model adds an interior cabin camera, which I’m really excited about. Packaging Everything arrived well organized and individually protected so nothing was scratched or damaged. The camera itself feels solid and premium with a nice weight and high quality materials. Installation Super easy for me since I already have the Vantrue OBD adapter installed and the cable routed to the rear. I’m glad they continue using USB-C because it made the upgrade plug-and-play. Removing the electrostatic mount from my old dash cam was surprisingly simple with no adhesive mess and no risk to my windshield tint. I applied the new sticker, aligned the camera, and that was it. Before hitting the road, I downloaded the latest firmware from the Vantrue website and updated the camera, which was quick and worked perfectly. I also like the SD card slot being tucked under the power button for a cleaner look. Footage and Usability The video quality is excellent. Watching the footage on my 57" monitor feels like watching a movie. I installed the rear camera inside, but the fact that it’s waterproof and can be mounted outside is a great option. The interior camera is perfectly clear and great for capturing anything happening in the cabin. I typically use an SD card reader to review clips, but the 5GHz Wi-Fi and mobile app make it easy to download recordings without removing the card. The menu layout is familiar from my previous model, and the button spacing and tactile feel are very well done. Conclusion This is a major upgrade from my previous camera, which my dad will now enjoy. The video quality is crisp, the build quality is excellent, and the included accessories are thoughtful. I may not personally need the optional LTE module, but it’s a great feature to have available. I’m confident I’ll get many years of use out of this dash cam, and I don’t think anyone would be disappointed choosing it. ... show more

  • Stay Safe and Protected on the Road
Really nice dash cam system with honestly more features than I cared to use. The main reason why I liked this one was because it includes a high quality, wired rear camera to make sure you're fully covered. We've had a few close calls on the local freeways with aggressive drivers just going way too fast or weaving through traffic, figured it was finally time that we got one of these. It happens more often at night especially, so the night vision is key. So the cameras are very good, you can get all the detail that you need from the exterior front and rear angles - those are the areas I'm most worried about so that you can capture other driver's behavior AND get their license plates. The interior camera is more of a novelty for us, but TBH if you are doing any gig work like Uber or Lyft then that interior camera is a huge value for keeping you protected against rude riders. The hardware is high quality, I've taken a look at some of the cheaper models and it's simply night and day. What I will say, however, is that you have to be mindful that you're not going to get like GoPro levels of fidelity - that's just outside the purpose of a dashcam. The cameras are wide angle so you'll get a of periphery footage as well. Something else to note, installing the rear cam does require a little bit being hanye around the car if you want to get a clean installation with the rear wire hidden. Vantrue does include a trim removable tool - you can grab your own pack from an auto parts store but honestly it's nice that it's already there. No more breaking things and trying to pry on your car's trim panels and breaking them with a screwdriver! But yeah, definitely take your time if it's your first time doing this. Someone noted in a different review that you can to be careful to point the cameras the way you want before sticking them in place - 100% do that! You do NOT want to accidentally damage the defrost lines or anything on your windows. Overall an awesome buy that gives you a lot more peace of mind. ... show more

  • Surprisingly Impressive 4K Dash Cam
I didn’t expect to be this impressed by a dash cam, but this one really stands out. The 4K video quality is pretty awesome—everything looks sharp, and you can clearly make out details like license plates and street signs without having to zoom in and distort the image. Even at night, the footage looks way better than what I’ve seen from other cameras in my other car. Setup was simple, and the whole thing took me about an hour but that is because I can 80% of the time reading instructions and videos. The app is actually easy to use (which isn’t always the case with tech like this), and transferring clips or adjusting settings is pretty much effortless. It’s small enough that it doesn’t take up much space on the windshield, and once you set it up, you pretty much forget it’s there. Overall, this dash cam just does exactly what you want it to do, and it does it really well. If you’re looking for clear video and a straightforward setup, this one is definitely worth it. I will add pictures as soon as I get a chance to take some. ... show more

  • Sceptical, at first, but came away impressed.
Pros: -Excellent build and sharp video quality. The internal camera has a wide enough angle to record side impacts. The voice commands work without a hitch, e.g. "Turn off screen". -I paired this with a Vantrue OBD hardwire kit to enable Parking Mode. While 'Collision Detection' left something to be desired - it's slow to record - 'Motion Detection' works great (although you might want to lower the sensitivity when parked in busy areas). A Samsung Pro Endurance 256GB microSDXC card works as the storage device. It was installed and formatted with no issue. -The USB cable included with the rear camera was long enough to install in my 4-door sedan, with almost a full foot of cable left in slack. Cons: -The dashcam can only be set up using the car charger adapter (included) or a hardwire kit. Connecting it to a power source via USB will power it up, but it will restart constantly - making setup via USB improbable. -It runs hot. So hot, that I won't be able to use the 'Collision Detection' or 'Motion Detection' feature during the hottest days. (I live in the desert.) Recording in low bitrate or low fps, however, is still an option. -The built-in WiFi feature cannot connect to another WiFi network. It works only as a standalone network to which your phone connects. Range is limited to 2 meters. ... show more
