  • Best mass produced tenor metal mouthpiece?
Style: Med. Chamber MP Kit
I have been playing tenor off and on for the past 30 years. I have a mouthpiece drawer full of pieces that I have kept over the years and it includes a few hard rubber Otto Links, a Dukoff and even a Sugal Super Gonz. In the past I’ve had a handful of metal Otto Link STM and New York models and even a Barone Hollywood but no longer had any of those. Recently I wanted to go back to the metal Link sound but wasn’t sure about getting an actual new Otto Link vs a more refined Link-like Theo Wanne or other boutique metal piece. While doing my research I came across the Vandoren V16 lineup and saw the medium chamber T7 was pretty much what I was going for. Most folks were saying it nailed the core Link vibe with higher quality and half price of the boutique pieces. I have been playing on it for the past few days and I agree. This piece leans toward the darker side but has a rich sound with a great tonal center. It doesn’t have some of the tubby/flabby character of other Links. It can easily get into brighter territory a bit when pushed. The low and high end of the horn are tamed...no more shrill highs and blatty low notes. The workmanship on the piece is very nice which is refreshing because that isn’t always the case at this price point. I got the kit with the optimum ligature and the whole setup just sings for me. I cannot recommend this enough for someone chasing the Link tone but doesn’t want to spend 2X to get it. ... show more

  • Amazing mouthpiece!
Style: Med. Chamber MP
I bought this mouthpiece after I read a SOTW thread on the piece: http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?201665-The-new-Vandoren-V16-Metal-Tenor-Mouthpieces as well as Steve Neff's review: http://www.neffmusic.com/blog/2015/02/vandoren-t7-medium-metal-tenor-saxophone-mouthpiece/ This mouthpiece looks beautiful and I find it easy and comfortable to use. It produces much warmer tones than my high-baffled mouthpiece but I would not characterize it as a particularly dark sounding mouthpiece. When pushed, it can produce bright and edgy sounds. I don't think that the "vintage" sound, whatever it means, is built-in in this mouthpiece. It responds well and allows you to sound like yourself. Overall, I enjoy playing on this mouthpiece very much. It is not as expensive as boutique metal mouthpieces out there, but this well-made mouthpiece is all I need. I am just a hobbyist and use Vandoren Java Green 2.5 reeds and the Vandoren optimum ligature on this mouthpiece, by the way. ... show more

Style: Small Chamber MP
This is a decent mouthpiece, but nothing special. I tried and fell in love with Drake mouthpieces. Drake pieces are the best I've ever played.

  • Highest Quality
Style: Small Chamber MP Kit
This is a revised review, which was posted a while back.. Vandoren metal T7 Small chamber, full kit with ligature. First off, the quality is superb. Beautiful, heavy piece. I got the small chamber, hoping it would sound bright enough. I like medium bright, not Dukoff bright. I have a link STM 7*, and this is a similar feel, but more refined. I put an Apoxie medium height baffle in the Link, and it plays great. I was hoping this one would not need it, due to the small chamber, and I think it passes the test. With the right reed, it sounds great, but for me, that is normal. Attributes are; Nicely finished, perfect quality, fairly thin, even rails, flat table. An elegant, refined version of an Otto Link, which is good or not so good, depending on your desires as a player. It has that little bit of extra width that the Links have, which I love. Feels right to me in that respect. If you are looking for a medium bright piece, or if you want a high quality Link, this might be your ticket. I measured the tip opening, it was .102.. My Link 7* measured .103.. Ligature is great, though pricey. It has slipped a few times when working with a large neck cork, whereas a Rovner will not slip at all. I should also mention, that although I am extremely happy that it came with a plastic cap, it is the thinnest plastic I have ever seen on any mouthpiece cap, not even close to the quality of cap that comes with a Rovner Ligature. Hope this helps. ... show more
