  • School Quality
This was a nice upgrade from our older microscope. Simply the fact you have dual eyepieces is a plus. It also has 4 objective lenses, and higher quality (so they say), professional lab grade lenses. The eyepieces can be viewed from many angles, and from farther back--there is no need to be squinting and stabbing your eye with the eyepiece. The high precision mobile caliper lets you move your slides by small, infinitesimal amounts instead of a manually pushing it around the observation deck. Instructions were clear, and there were no functional issues with any of the components. For the price, it is a good buy for a beginner scientist, or school setting. ... show more

  • I dont think this is worth it or the cost
Lots of improvements need to be made here before they ask 200 for it like they are. The bulk of it is plastic with a metal base. The lenses are beyond dirty and irreparable. I've tried to clean them only to find that wasn't the problem. It's nonfunctional from the slide platform up. I think there's better things you can spend 200 dollars on this year and this isn't one of those things. the closest I ever came to a magnification of anything was my eyelashes and the little floating squiggles in my eyes. It could be possible I was sent a damaged and defective product. But I really don't think so. It came packaged and in a case filled with thick foam meant to be used as a protective carry case. I thought it would be cool to use this for some soil samples from my garden so I can find and target specific things in my soil that would or could cause damage to my crops and need to no longer be there also as something my kids can use to learn with. But none of that will be happening because this thing doesn't work at all anyways. ... show more

  • For the budding scientist
Overall, I feel like I had to work way too hard to get a decent image with this microscope. The lack of rubber eyecups for the eyepieces made it very difficult to see an image without light creeping in and my eyelashes getting smushed against the lenses on the eyepieces. I was also never able to get a good stereo image, even with the distance between the eyepieces adjusted for my eyes. I also found the knob that adjusts the distance between eyepieces to be very stiff. With the two longer objectives, light was cut to the point that only the most translucent specimens were visible enough to achieve focus. With the two shorter objectives, I was able to get a decent image that was fairly sharp. The iris diaphragm under the specimen stage helps a lot with contrast, but is of limited usefulness at higher magnifications due to how much it reduces light passing through the specimen. A more powerful light would help tremendously with the longer objectives. In fact, I think it is safe to say that you will almost never use the light dimmer knob. The X/Y-Axis adjustment knobs are a nice touch and very helpful in getting smaller samples into the field of view. That being said, I experienced a lot of trouble bringing specimens into view with the two longer objectives. This is just how it is when dealing with extreme magnification. The blur from being out of focus is so extreme that you cannot tell if the specimen is coming into view, and because you can't focus on nothingness, you also cannot pre-focus to make it easier to see the specimen as it shows up. This is not to say that the X/Y adjustment isn't nice to have, but rather that its usefulness is greatly diminished when working with longer objectives. The unit slides around pretty easily due to the hard plastic feet. Hard plastic feet were not a sensible design choice. The plastic head that accepts the eyepieces is pretty flimsy. But honestly, it isn't so much that I mind that the head itself is plastic; rather, it's that plastic was used for the portion of the head that interfaces with the microscope body. This should work more like the part that holds the objectives, with smooth movement and detents rather than set screws and a head that falls off during adjustment. I would have preferred glass slides to the plastic ones included with the kit. It won't take long for the plastic to get scratched. Some sample specimens (fly wings, etc.) would have been nice as well. Unfortunately, none are included. The smartphone holder is not very useful. You can't just place it on the eyepiece; you have to hold it in place to keep the image centered. The documentation lacks detail and is honestly not very helpful. At the time of my order, the price on this kit was $200. That, I feel, was way too much. Its current price is better, but still slightly too high. This might be an OK - but not great - entry-level microscope for a young person who is interested in science, but if you can budget for something of higher quality, you might consider that option, if only to spare yourself and your child the frustrations of this microscope's limitations and questionable design choices. ... show more

  • Build quality is solid.
This microscope is powerful enough for detailed home science projects. The wide-angle eyepieces make viewing comfortable. I love the included phone holder for taking pictures. Build quality is solid. Great for students or hobbyists

  • Optics are terrible, but it's a pretty package.
When it comes to microscopes, the number one priority should be optics. Unfortunately, this microscope falls well short of providing clear images and is essentially worthless. I can't tell if the lens are scratched or if it's just dirt and debris on the inside of them, but it makes it impossible to see a clear image. I'm less concerned with the materials of the microscope itself, but I really would have expected more metal for something in this price range. As it is, there is an awful lot of plastic. It does come in an extremely convenient carrying case, and there are plenty of blank slides. But all of this is largely irrelevant if you can't even see what you put under the objective. Lastly, the instructions are completely useless, so if you were to give this to someone with no previous microscope experience, they would be lost. ... show more

  • Great present for my 14 year old niece.
I bought this for my 14-year-old niece and she loves it! It looks professional and comes with a lot of pieces and settings, but it's not too complicated to use. The magnification is powerful enough to explore a lot of interesting things, especially for a curious kid. The included case is excellent—everything fits snugly in its own spot, which makes it easy to keep organized. ... show more

  • Dirty lenses made it unusable
I found this microscope almost unusable. The lenses are dirty and there is no way to clean them so I can't magnify any slides. The product is basically plastic and while it came well packaged, it isn't something that I have been able to use because of the dirty lenses. I was really hoping for a better product but this falls far short of my expectations ... show more
