    • Decent microscope, but barely usable at high magnification
1000x magnification is barely usable as there is not enough light for it, and you can forget about looking at anything with 2000x zoom. The built in LED lights are not powerful enough and the angle of the top light is not very practical as the samples get shadowed by the lens. A standalone LED light is needed for high res viewing. With that said usually most of samples (both included and collected otherwise) can be viewed at lower zoom and this microscope works well in that range. Additionally I got 5x and 10x replaceable eye pieces for various lower zoom combinations. My kid loves it. Now he collects dead insects and is determined to find a live water bear. ... show more

    • Not sure if the high power objective works
The scope is not set so that the stage does not bump into the objectives. It seems like it is very easy to attempt to go from medium power to high power and break your slide into the high power objective lens. If you focus on medium, you will probably be too close to the top to rotate the high power into position. I was not able to. I was also afraid to try really hard because I was afraid of damaging the slide or the lenses. As far as beginner scopes go, it set up easily, the light worked well, and it is fun that you can change the color of the light with the diaphragm. If you want to be able to see single-celled creatures, it will probably not work well for that, unless they are huge. Because of the stage rising into the lens issue, I would highly supervise beginner students using the scope to make sure they do not ram a slide into your lens. I can't complain too much as I paid less than $100, so the scope almost met my expectations. If you want to see if you like microscopy, this scope might be good for that so you don't spend too much on a start up hobby. ... show more
