This is a nice auger. The screw is properly tapered so it starts in the wood easily. The weld for the eye is centered and it has about an inch of hex if you want to turn it with a wrench. I was able to easily bore holes in oak and maple. The scotch eye is supposed to be used to help make your tenons and the edge is fairly sharp. It works well enough to get the last little bit of wood off so that your tenons are round and fit in the holes you bored. I like the size of it because you are able to make holes in fairly large pieces of wood. Going with me on my next camping trip. The pouch is made from flimsy fake leather but there is a part that wraps around the screw so protect it.

This tool is a “must have” tool in everyone’s bushcraft kit. The tapered screw starts the hole and draws the auger bit into the wood as you rotate the tool. (Hint: make a short handle from a branch to gain additional leverage as you drill.) The auger bit is extremely sharp and cuts through the wood like a hot knife through butter thus forming a perfect hole. Once you have your holes drilled you can use the scotch eye on the reverse end to make a dowel that fits perfectly in the holes you created. With this tool and a small camp axe you can easily make stools and small table for use around camp. Well worth the money for those who want to elevate their bushcraft game.

Quality, quality, quality! It's all one piece of metal with no joints to worry about working loose. The craftsmanship is really nice. Also nice are the genuine leather blade wrap and sheath with a carabiner attached. The hole for the stick is slightly over one inch wide and tapered on one side. It comes out of the box very sharp so please be careful. I think it is super easy to use. Just find a sturdy stick (or rod) that will fit snuggly in the hole, press down, and turn. I found it worked great using a one-inch wooden dowel. The tip is self-tapping and makes quick work of starting the hole. After the hole is started, just keep it straight and press down as you turn. Obviously, harder woods will be tougher to drill into than softer ones. This is a very well-made item and will last for a long, long time. I'm very pleased.

First thing I did was went out back found a down tree and started drillin I had no idea how easy it actually was to drill this big of a hole into firb by hand im completely shocked, I drilled untill my hands hurt, I needed to get it out of my system I guess.

Just used it to make a "swedish fire log" and did the trick. It does require alittle downwards pressure to continue drilling deep. And it channels the excess out well. Kinda large ofcourse.

the welds are not structural, by any means the peg maker isnt usable Unless you want to break it I’m going to weld it back on because I am a welder. get what you pay for
