  • Easy Peasy Speedy and setup is cake
I admit I already have one Unifi WAP (AC Pro) and needed to replace my other 10 year old WAP, so bought this one this time around. As I have the Unifi software already configured and running on a home server, it was cake to plug this into the network. That was the hard part. In the setup website, I had to 'adopt' it, then wait for a short time while it provisioned. Then I had to click to update the firmware which it downloaded and installed, then reprovisioned itself. Done. One tip I would give anyone looking to buy a Ubiquity WAP. You don't have to wait for your WAP to arrive, I installed the software on my home server and configured my home wireless on it while I was waiting for the first WAP to arrive. So when I got it, I was already familiar with the software and had it setup already. For these, you need to go online to read the setup instructions, and download the software if not buying a controller. Please don't fault the device for this and give a bad review because you didn't know something. I even read one review where the person was expecting to directly setup the device, he was looking for it's IP to log into it so he gave a negative review because HE didn't know how these work. The beauty here is a single point of control for ALL the WAPs, and Ubiquity's other devices if you use those. Adding this second WAP was as easy as breathing as the wireless was already setup. This WAP feels nicely made, it's smaller than I thought it would be, and has good coverage. My house isn't that big, but it's an older house with lots of walls (and they are not paper thin like new homes). Lots of antique heavy wood furniture in the bedrooms (some are ceiling height) and the wireless gets eaten alive. So two WAPs on the same SSID give me coverage all the way out to the covered front porch, and out on the back porch. UPDATE- it's been 5 months, and my to UNIFI WAPs, (this, and an AC PRO) have been working flawlessly. I ended up ordering a couple of Intel based PCI NICs for a couple of my computers so they can take advantage of AC (I've been using N since before AC existed and these are my first AC WAPs) and I have good coverage. ... show more

  • Plug in, adopt, update, and forget about Wi-Fi issues
After going through a few iterations of UniFi gear for a two story attached townhouse (plus basement), I’ve presently settled on a pair of these to provide Wi-Fi and a bridge between two wired network segments (main + second floor, basement lab). THE GOOD: small form factor, mesh link speeds between 640-800 MBps, PoE allows for flexible placement and power, great coverage from a single device, easy management with UniFi SDN, rock solid performance above and beyond regular consumer or ISP offerings, comes with PoE injector if you don’t have a switch with this capability, easily handles higher device counts THE BAD: a bit pricey if you’re just starting into the UniFi ecosystem THE BOTTOM LINE: The UniFi product line offers a good balance between function and ease of use, and the Flex HD APs are my go to recommendation for anyone looking to up their network game without running face first into heavyweight enterprise devices. The ecosystem is well rounded, and while there are some components that are less capable than alternatives (USG, I’m looking at you), none match the ease of use for management. Plug in, adopt, update, and you’re off and running. ... show more

  • Clean unit with good wifi performance
I debated 4 stars due to 1 RJ45 port with no pass through. Fortunately I have 2 Cat 6a ports in office drop so can commit one to the Flex HD. I have a pro in the living room. The pro services many more clients and rock solid performance. The Flex HD is on medium 5ghz vht 80 and low 2.4 40. Primary services first floor office and second floor above I have a pro on low. Performed site survey with NetSpot Pro and used Android Wifi Analysis app. I turned off power to all AP's except Flex HD and wall penetration is low which isn't consistent with transmission and antenna gains. The pro should not have superior coverage, but it does in my testing. So why did I give a very expensive AP 5 stars. Cute little unit that I have sitting on a table and most people would not realize it is an AP. I wish it had a black wrapper or ability to paint and would be perfect. The Nano HD is still my favorite access point for performance vs cost. Nano HD does not have pass through and limits implementation for individuals that want to leverage Unifi POE switches ... show more

  • THESE THINGS FREAKING JUST WORK!!! I like, nay, I LOVE these little guys!!!
I got a UNIFI DreamMachine pod and two of these little Access Points and they worked so well at work, I got the same setup at home. I had been having all kinds of problems with WIFI at home, and these have eliminated the WIFI issues I used to have... You can have as MANY SSID's (Wireless Network Names) as you like, and you can choose if each SSID is either 2.4ghz, or 5, or both. I had some legacy equipment, so they got their own SSID to connect to, which meant the newer stuff could still speed test out at 700-900 megs down on internet speed checks. THESE THINGS ARE AMAZING!!! And I LOVE that they all are managed by the UNIFI Network App... And now I can manage all of the UNIFI devices from the one single app. THAT IS AMAZING STUFF PEOPLE!!! I can log onto the app, change an SSID and have it go to all the Access points and Wifi devices at the same time. I can log in and change the color of the light on the top of the device or I can ban a single device that I don't want to be able to communicate with the outside world. AND THAT folks--- is magic. And it works. And I love it. ... show more

  • Discreet and powerful for home use.
Works great for my use case. I have an outdoor Ring camera which, being on the opposite side from my other UniFi APs, has trouble connecting to my WiFi. This cute little cylindrical AP looks perfectly at home on a windowsill in my kitchen. It has boosted my WiFi signal in that end of the house, and has even projected it outside which is very convenient. I would highly recommend this AP. It is very similar in functionality to the Nano HD APs. I actually wish these had been available back when I first bought my APs, I would not have bothered with the Nano HDs because these fulfill my needs just fine. ... show more

  • It has its own problems - Resolved
This product would be 5-star worthy, until I discovered a glitch in its behavior and tech support on the matter has gone silent. I am using the device with 4 SSIDs, each using both the 2g and 5g radios. One of the SSIDs is on a schedule (WLAN for the kids gadgets). When the schedule turns the SSID back on, the 2g radio appears to drop all connected clients for a period of time (as if the radio is restarting). Not happening with the 5g connected clients. This might not seem like a big deal until you recognize most of your home automation runs on a 2g radio. I have reported this to Ubiquiti, with 2 follow-ups requesting status over the last 3 days. I have not even gotten so much as an acknowledgement of them having received the email. The rating will be reviewed and updated based on Ubiquiti’s handling of this issue. 2/13/2020 - Update Since writing the original review, Ubiquiti Tech Support finally got back to me. The issue is not resolved. No update on that front. The support rep is going back and forth with the "try this" and "check that" mindset, which is all OK to be thorough, but they have thus far refused to answer my question regarding if they have reproduced or otherwise verified the issue exactly as I have have described to them. Obviously I have to take a non-answer as a 'no'. Meanwhile, I think they have run out of things to check and verify, where they are now going to have really investigate the problem. I figured out how to reproduce the problem in a controlled manner with about 5 minutes of effort, so I suspect they either have as well, or are doing so now. The bigger problem I see is the firmware in use in the product is the same firmware in use in many, if not all of the UAP products, and there are many. This little glitch I found, while seemingly simple, is likely a nightmare for them to address across all their product line. Pure speculation on all that. Given the lack of tech response to my questions, and no resolution, or pathway to resolution provided yet, the review remains 1-star quality. Stay away if your requirements include SSID operations on a schedule! Another update will come when Ubiquiti does something worthwhile on this case. 2/22/2020 (11:30pm) After much back and forth, Ubiquiti Networks FINALLY acknowledged the issue as I reported it. The weird part is they said “something is not quite right”, rather than acknowledging a bug in the firmware or the product. They are supposedly reviewing internally. I continue to wait for progress. When I know more, I will again update the post. 4/25/2020 I should have wrote this review several weeks ago before the quarantine started, but it does not matter as there is no change as of today. Tech support after acknowledging the problem indicated to me that they had no timeline for fixing the issue. They would not even acknowledge that the issue was in the pipeline to be addressed. Nice job UBNT. 12/11/2020 Earlier this week I noticed a firmware update was available. For those not in the know, the Unifi Controller will show this detail, but you have to specifically look for it. Anyway... I installed the firmware update (v5.43.19.12493) and presto-magico the issue I reported is now resolved, or so it appears to be. Time will tell for certain and I will update this post again if I figure out that the problem remains in some form, or if it has been exchanged for a different problem. I have updated threating on this item to 4 stars, because UBNT support has proven to be very hit and miss, nearly impossible to get on the phone, and there was zero communication to me regarding the firmware change telling the issue I pressed so hard for was actually addressed. But, at least they got to it. You do have to be more competent with networking concepts to configure this device beyond what the everyday home user would otherwise do - but you can use it like that too. In all fairness, this is really the best AP I have ever used and I suspect the entire line of Unifi APs are equally as good. As I noted in the original posting, this device would have otherwise gotten a 5-star review. I chose this model as I do not have the wiring in the ceiling space, or the POE switch to drive that type of installation (next house!), and the device provides a fairly sleek look without gaudy antennas or the look of a space ship. There are a ton of features on this device I still do not use, so no telling if there are more hidden gems of defectiveness, but for my usage, this thing is a perfect as I could ask for. I use 4 SSIDs each allowing usage of the 2g or 5g radio when the client connects, each SSID on a separate VLAN. I have the FlexHD trunked to an EdgeRouter 4 (yes - I went outside the Unifi bubble for the router, better throughput) where each of my 4 VLANS is segregated so I no longer have the concerns of the kids gaming gadgets interfering with what is important to me, and I do not have applied QOS as that just slows everything down a bit. With this latest firmware, I am able to turn on/off a specific SSID on a schedule and not affect anything else. Translation, no more concern for the kids being on their gadgets too late at night (or too early), and my IOT network for the house remains online. One device is adequately covering a 2-story 3000 sq ft house, with a 40'x45' footprint. The device is located in the upper lever, slightly toward the front of the house. 5g signal weakens a little in the farthest indoor location, but it does work. 2g is rock solid everywhere, including up to about 20 feet way from the exterior walls of the house (front and back). ... show more

  • Small, powerful Wi-Fi access point that goes anywhere
This Unifi FlexHD access point recently replaced a Netgear WiFi router being used as in access point mode to provide wireless access to my home. The Netgear unit was giving me some performance issues, and I wasn't using the router features as my internal Internet routing was being handled by a Ubiquity EdgeMax router in my home office connected to my cable modem. The access point is connected to the router via a Unifi 8-port ethernet switch which is hardwired to the router from my family room. After replacing the uplink cable from an old Cat 5E with obsolete Cat 5 connectors to full Cat 6, I ended up with a full 1000 Mbps connection to the access point and extremely fast Wi-Fi throughput in and around my home. The Unifi system provides a management tool called Unifi Controller, which manages the access point and two Unifi 8-port Ethernet switches. All configuration is performed from the controller application, and the feature set is incredibly deep for the price. (Suggestion: you should install the Controller on a system that's available 24/7 for local management and to take full advantage of the Controller's remote management capabilities). My Controller instance runs on my Synology network attached storage device which runs 24/7 in my home, but you can install it on any computer. The Controller is completely web enabled and accessed with any modern browser. If you have a large home, you have the capability of adding additional FlexHD access points that will link with the main unit and provide strong Wi-Fi signals throughout your residence. Mine is place in the middle of my house and on its own provides a very strong signal throughout, even reaching distant bedrooms and my garage. I have not had the need to contact Unifi support, but there is an active user community that can provide advice and assistance in the event it is needed. Highly recommended. ... show more
