  • A GREAT NEW ROUTER. A GREAT NEW ROUTER.
2015 to now, zero problems ever. (non VLAN , no VPN usages) just a grate fast router, 800Mbps via optimum cable. always keep the firmware up to date, hot patch 7 is it. the product line has ended, so I bought 3 spare Edge max. ( it runs fast and cool) and I now run on FIBER ISP I love mine. and has no exploits like many do.(vast) never keep the default user name or PW ever,.! The best thing to do for home users that do not understand how TCP/IP works, is to upgrade firmware and click on wizard ICON and click basic setup. and now it becomes a working router and not before. the maker has not a clue as to your end uses. home, business or SOHO. (yes complex this is, on a world scale) it even supports 2 ISP connections WAN at one. ( so it can never fail) mostly used by business. it must be configured to work, it is not PnP plug and play. other home only routers, are PNP. (can be)<< consumer grade is is called. A new router is one of the most complex things to setup if no experience here. I do hope this helps. the older versions have no wizard for basics so do upgrade the firmware first. then click wizard. no router made that I have seen has or had better documentation, PDF and on line and is Hugely extensive. I run a bunch of netgear switches in the attic to connect every room to wired GIGA LAN ports. (wall jacks) and 2 AP , Unifi AP , that never ever fail. love mine, I do. happy trails to all ... show more

  • Home/Small Biz Users, Don't Be Afraid!
I can't comment on longevity or anything like that yet, as I've just set it up. But so far I am VERY pleased. I'm a modern guy living in a modern home, and as such I have many devices and ethernet running to three bedrooms. I had been looking at so-called "gaming" wifi routers - I'm not a gamer - mainly to get eight or more ethernet ports. I also wanted better wifi signal, as my old wifi router wasn't getting signal to distant areas of my house. Instead of a gaming router, I got this and a separate UniFi wifi access point, and couldn't be happier. The Ubiquiti stuff is of course designed more for professional users, and does not come truly "plug and play" for home users. But if you have a basic familiarity with networking terminology, you can find great guidance videos online and get this installed easily. I used the fantastic tutorials posted by "Toasty Answers" on U2ube, and I sure hope that guy gets a commission from Ubiquiti because his assistance was the difference that made me buy the router and access point when I was a bit too nervous to try to go it alone. If you are hesitant like I was, watch the video(s) before you decide, and you will likely see that you can get it set up properly. Again, glad I did, it and the wifi access point are working great, with better speeds and greater range than I had before. Plus, I was able to clean up my cabling mess by getting rid of the separate network switch I had needed to connect all my devices. ... show more

  • very reliable, feature-rich, and well made router
Pluses: - Many config options - Can be managed with scripts via ssh - Insecure telnet access not open by default - Reasonable price - Many ports (10 + console) - Has deep packet inspection which allows you to see all devices and which apps/sites they use over time - Proxy-arp between networks - Hairpin NAT support - Many other features, too many to enumerate here - Nice colorful graphs - Fast and very reliable operation - Low power consumption Minuses: - Boot time is slow (~1-2 min) - UI is not the most intuitive. Main menu doesn't have DHCP client-list (hidden under 3-level of clicks). Has unnatural menu-tabs both on top (Dashboard, Traffic-Analysis, Firewall, Servies) and on bottom of screen (Alerts & System). And to add more confusion, some links on the left. Takes time to get used to and find everything you need (They are all there, just hard to find) - Running vyos (Vyatta OS) which is an admin layer above debian/Linux with an additional arcane command-set. This may be an advantage if you manage big networks with many devices, since UNMS (Ubiquiti network management system) allows you to automate everything, including auto-updates, and keep track of downtimes, and much more via vyos. - Naively adding stuff/changes doesn't survive reboots (for that you will need to create a new image, using configure + commit + save in vyos) - Installing some new software is not trivial: e.g. even though this is debian-based (mipsel architecture). e.g. rsync from debian repositories had either too high-version prereqs or too low-versions vs existing libs/software on the device. Need to use the old "build from source" route or find dedicated vyos repos. - Restoring config from backup in the UI doesn't actually change the config. Again: you need to configure + commit + save in vyos which I found quite confusing. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. The ability to really see what's going on on your network is a major plus. Having a Linux system and ssh to it gives you much more control than a limited HTTP interface. If you like tweaking your network equipment and know Linux, this may be one of the better options out there. ... show more

  • A Cool running router
I bought this router because of it's 10 ports (9 after you designate the WAN port), and I wanted to use it as an internal router in my network (to isolate the 'parents' network from the 'kids' network for security reasons). Advice: read the online setup documentation BEFORE you try to set up this router. PROS: 10 ports (9 after you allocate the WAN port) Runs very cool, after running it for a week, I can barely feel any heat coming off of it. Easy to update firmware. Easy to set up using the Basic Set up wizard (but more complicated after the wizard) Factor installed firmware is recent and works (unlike other Edgemax Routers I've used) Fast. My network is a bit snappier after installing this router. Web pages load faster. Excellent online resources for managing and setting up Ubiquity Routers. CONS: No quick startup documentation comes with the router. You need to look it up online. Slow to reboot. Takes about 5 minutes. User interface is difficult to use and understand, not as nice as the Ubiquity Unifi interface, not simple like consumer routers, not for a non-techical user. ... show more

  • Unreliable even after replacement
I used this as a basic router between some Ethernet devices and a WiFi AP, connected to a standard cable modem. I did nothing but the basic setup wizard. Everything would work fine and the GUI is nice until some point after a week or so it would lock up. The switch would fail and the GUI or SSH would not work. It would usually take many reboots to get it back up sometimes I would have to hard reset and start again. I blamed my ISP for a long time, but I bought a new modem and it still happened, then went to an old router and it was fine. I went back and forth with support and they eventually replaced it with another one. Same deal. I gave up with it since it is out of return time and I don’t think replacing it for a third time will do anything. Nice idea, good price, if only it were more reliable for a home network! ... show more

  • Wonderful 10 port Router for Tech minded (wired only)
If you know how to program routers, this one is wonderful. You can implement a fail-over, has 10 ports, 512 mb RAM, fast and efficient. Works so well. I connected my Amplfi Alien in bridge mode to it. Works great. I made if fail-over from Comcast to a local internet provider. So if Comcast goes down then it flips automatically to another provider and back when it comes back up. Awesome. Great build quality. Comes with power supply. This unit is not a wireless router, wired only, but it can be connected to a wireless access point. ... show more

  • Great router and not difficult to setup
I know some of the reviews suggest that this router is geared for a more tech-savvy user but I disagree. Every router has its approach to managing settings and Ubiqiti EdgeRouters are no different. I didn't find the learning curve with this router to be more difficult than other routers. In fact, the EdgeOS interface makes a lot more sense to me than the UI of my last router, an Actiontec MI424WR. If you just want to get up and running with some sensible default settings, run one of the wizards, change your admin user ID and password, and you'll be good to go. I'm using the EdgeRouter 10x with to power a Ubiquiti AP-AC-Lite access point using over a ~40 foot run of CAT5e. It works great and it's so nice to not have to use a PoE injector any more! ... show more

  • No Jumbo Frames
After exchanging messages with Ubiquity tech support I bought this device after being told that it would support jumbo frames on its ethernet ports (i.e. MTU 9000). It turns out that it doesn't support MTU 9000, but only MTU 2018, just like the ER-X model. Therefore I returned the product. I don't think you get your full money's worth for all of those extra ethernet ports if it doesn't support full jumbo frames for switching on your local lan. I wanted jumbo frames for the local lan as that speeds up large file transfers between computers. I ended up buying an 5 port ER-X (for $50 less) and an 8 port switch that does support jumbo frames. I connected the local lan devices to the switch so that they can utilize jumbo frames when transferring files between themselves, and then connected the switch to the ER-X to supply internet access. ... show more
