Honestly, I just needed a big knife to cut brisket, but I am pleasantly surprised with this find. Seems really good quality, blade is long enough, the handle is beautiful, and it fits well in the hand. But probably most importantly, it cuts extremely easily. Almost no effort is required to hold down what you're cutting, the blade just glides right through. I would definitely pick this up if you're in the market for a larger blade for cutting bread, or meats

I bought this for my wife. She has increasing joint pain and had mentioned that a couple of her knives were hurting her hands when she had to use them for more than a few minutes. We are not knife snobs (most of our knives are Victorinox, Global, etc.) but we *do* care about them. I was leery about buying a cheap Chinese knife, but I took a chance on this knife, mainly because of the handle shape and the decent reviews. She also mentioned that she wanted a longer paring knife. All of her paring knives have been in the 3 to 3.5 inch length, and usually with relatively thin blades. This was a bit of a departure, more like a utility kitchen knife than a traditional paring knife. She has been very pleased. We've only had it for a few weeks so I can't say about long-term durability or edge-holding, but they came out of the box sharp enough (again, not snob sharp, but as sharp as our Chef's Choice sharpened knives), and they've held up for a few weeks now. The thicker, rounder handle feels better in her hand, and she appreciates the balance, with the center of gravity a bit more toward the handle. The handle is attractive enough, but know that it's not really what a normal person would call "wood" (that is, cut from a tree and put on a knife). I'm not *exactly* certain what "pakkawood" is, but if you told me it's really a composite material (you know, sawdust and plastic binder), I'd believe it in a second. The color and "grain" are printed on, which is not what I expected, but it *should* have been what I expected when you consider the (very low) price. Frankly, we're both fine with it: you can't expect more for this price, and it's probably a lot less fussy this way anyway. Besides, fit, balance, sharpness and durability mean a lot more than handle material. For what we've been able to experience in a few weeks, this knife is certainly good enough, even before you consider the very reasonable price.

I'm not kidding, this is a fantastic knife for the price. I wanted a not-too-small-not-too-big general knife. The pairing knife from my otherwise excellent German knife set was too small and the small chef knife was too big. This knife is just right for many of the misc small cutting jobs. Jobs when you only need to cut a few of something like cucumbers, mushrooms, celery, carrots etc. The handle is easy to hold and doesn't slip in my medium sized hands. Besides, it looks beautiful with the fiery-red coloring. It very much stands out in the otherwise boring black block set. The blade is very sturdy. Far less flex that the smaller German pairing knife I'd likely compare it to. It's sharp... and has stayed sharp. Keep in mind that I'm not a knife neanderthal that can't be bothered to grab a cutting board. I use a cutting board, but also use the knife a bunch. I've not felt even close to busting out the knife sharpener. If you have made it this far in the, I have to note that this is now the second knife from this fiery red style that I *purchased*. No freebie knife-for-review here. I bought the second knife, since I loved the first so much. Here's my only very minor issue... I'd like to have the handle coated/protected/poly'd... I never let my wood handled knives set in water nor dumb enough to place in the dish washer. I use them and immediately clean then dry them. On the other hand, the feel of that wood handle is very good.

Have both the santoku and the nakiri. Fantastic fit and finish for $30 knives. Attractive, well balanced, and razor sharp right out of the box, which is itself giftably pretty. Tapered bolster makes for a comfortable pinch grip and the smooth wooden handle fills the palm nicely. I'll be using these for life.
