I was given some Walnut and Oak stumps my neighbor had taken out. I have a splitting axe, but it just goes in and gets stuck. I needed something better. I have literally beaten this thing to death. It has taken over 1000 sledge hammer hits. It still works, and except for a few sledge marks where I didn't get a square hit, looks the same except there's no paint on top. I expected it to disintegrate, but I was wrong. This was on of the cheaper options Amazon sells, but it's tough. The tip is easy to get started into the wood, and usually splits wood into 2 to 4 pieces. It depends on placement. I'm happy.

My son and I use it for splitting logs. We used a 4 pound hammer to start it, then finish with a 10 pound sledge hammer. We were able to split long, hard wood logs. I think it is easier to split shorter logs, but this wedge works. If your wood is hard, or logs are large, buy more than 1... use 2 wedges.

I'd never used a wedge before. I had 2+ cords of large douglas fir rounds. These were on average 28-32" diameter. Previously I'd been using a Fiskars Super Splitter for this. That's a great axe, but not well suited to breaking apart large rounds. I bought an 8-lb maul to split the large rounds into smaller pieces. That works on some, but not on others. I found that if the maul alone can't do it, I insert this wedge into one of the divots created by the maul. Then I tap it in with a sledge hammer to get it stuck in a bit. Then I take a few swings with the sledge hammer and it pops them apart almost every time. I also purchased a wood grenade at the same time as this and found the wedge works far better for my situation. The grenade may do better on different wood, I'm not sure.

Works much better than a flat-faced wedge. The moon-shaped point is easy to place in a pierced spot on a large block of wood and the wedge is long enough to really get a split in the 36inch diameter wood pigs I am splitting. Perfect for logging and wood splitting of blocks that are too large for even me to split with a maul.

These wedges appear to be drop forged, then the edge is flame cut. This leaves a lot to be desired. Wedges don't have to be shaving sharp by any stretch of the imagination, but they should be sharp enough to start into the round without undo effort. These were not, and the edges were painted over as well. I went over them with a file and cleaned up the edge to the point it was usable. The angle and length of the flame cut was also very inconsistent, even on the two samples I have. I guess I should have figured on this with such a cheap product.

So, I bought this wedge based on the other reviews. It arrived and a few days later I give a try. My first in impression was "WTF". I would get it started in the center of the round (24+" red oak) with a small sledge then go at it with my big sledge. It would pop out. Literally bounce out of the hole on to the ground. I was very confused and pissed. I was wailing on this thing for a good 10 minutes barely getting it into the round more than an inch or two. On a whim, I started just tapping it down with sledge, only lifting the sledge maybe two feet above the wedge. The round split apart after 5 of these hits. Not sure if it was the round or what, but splitting a round without having to swing a 10lb sledge above my head sure is nice.
