NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION “Brilliant, beautiful, heartbreaking.”—J.Courtney Sullivan, New York Times Book Review “TRESPASSES vaults Kennedy into the ranks of such contemporary masters as McCann, Claire Keegan, Colin Barrett, and fellow Sligo resident, Kevin Barry.” —Oprah Daily Set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, a shattering novel about a young woman caught between allegiance to community and a dangerous passion. Amid daily reports of violence, Cushla lives a quiet life with her mother in a small town near Belfast, teaching at a parochial school and moonlighting at her family’s pub. There she meets Michael Agnew, a Protestant barrister who’s made a name for himself defending IRA members. Against her better judgment, Cushla lets herself get drawn in by him and his sophisticated world, and an affair ignites. Then the father of a student is savagely beaten, setting in motion a chain reaction that will threaten everything, and everyone, Cushla most wants to protect. Read more

  • Heart Wrenching!
This is a wonderfully written and heartbreaking fictional account about Belfast and the complex narrative that defines Northern Ireland. The book arrived as stated and on time. I would definitely recommend this seller. Great read.

  • WOW!
FIRST TIME WITH AUTHOR. THIS IS A HEART RENDERING STORY. I WISH I COULD ADEQUATELY EXPRESS HOW MUCH I ENJOYED THIS STORY. THE CHARACTERS ARE REAL AND THE SETTING IS HEART BREAKING.

  • Not Recommended
Sometimes I became frustrated with terms I knew nothing about. They were Words used in the Irish language but I had no idea what they meant. I tried googling them but found no explanations most of the time. Had me losing interests sometimes. Good story but too slow in the first two-thirds of the book. This is not a book I would recommend to anyone I know. ... show more

  • Couldn’t put down!
Slight Spoiler Warning! After watching Derry Girls I have wanted to read and learn more about The Troubles. I personally loved this book. Cushla is young and naive, she’s still grieving her father. Working full time as a teacher, part time at her family’s pub, all while being a caregiver to her mother. It made sense that she fell into the arms of Michael. I hated Michaels character (I found him to be extremely selfish) and I hated that Cushla was belittling herself for him. However, I was sad for his outcome and it caught me by surprise. I truly loved the McGeown family and was sad for their outcome. I enjoyed reading the tension between Tommy and Cushla, and at some point found myself shipping them. His actions at the end of the book felt random though. There wasn’t enough build-up to truly justify what he did to Michael. It just felt unbelievable. I finished this book in a week. I enjoyed learning more about The Troubles and more about the culture of Northern Ireland. It’s a book about religion, politics, family, love, and grief. I would highly recommend this book. Louise Kennedy is a gifted storyteller, this isn’t a book that I would be quick to forget. ... show more

  • Authentic History and Greist Character Development
Believably set during the Northern Irish Troubles of the 60s, the is the story of the impact of the violence on a young non-political Catholic school teacher and her family. At a time when too many novelists feel compelled to beat a drum for a particular cause, complain about a gradience or draw attenuated parallels to current events this author avoids such off putting pitfalls. I stayed up far into the night to finish the story because I had come to care about the characters. I highly recommend this book for enjoyable reading. ... show more

  • Excellent writing, compelling well-drawn characters
I really can't say enough about the author's writing skills -- she will place the reader in the midst of Ireland's Troubles where the reader will really understand what it was like to live in Belfast at the time. You will care about all of the characters and their particular troubles. My only quibble is that I felt a little let down by the ending. It just didn't feel an organic ending to the story. Probably, though, most readers won't mind and it certainly didn't taint my overall enjoyment of the book. ... show more
