  • Deco X60 Mesh good for basic setups, not so for more than anything basic
Style: WiFi 6 Mesh, Dual-Band
Decided to change from cable to fiber internet (different companies) when it became available at our home address. Have about 100 IOT devices (dimmers, switches, lights, security system, IP cams, home automation hubs etc) so decided to take the opportunity to transition devices over to a separate router prior to the switch to fiber so that: 1) IOT devices would already have reserved IP addresses associated with said router and router could just be plugged into the new fiber gateway without any down time as it takes many hours to reprogram devices with new IP reservations, and 2) could readily isolate IOT devices from data devices. That was the theory anyway. The Deco X60 seemed to be well reviewed as a moderately priced Wifi6 capable mesh device that also incorporated WPA3 so appeared to be a good moderately priced choice. Hardware was simple to set up, but therein lies the problem. Generally, the hardware seems to be fairly good with respect to 5GHz, but is suprisingly weak in 2.4GHz in terms of range. The main limitation is the router administration software. In an effort to simplify things for the user, many useful options are left out, many of which are very basic to most router software. For example, most current IOT devices even today, operate on the 2.4GHz band. Most routers in this price range allow you to assign separate SSIDs to each of 2.4 and 5GHz bands, as well as having separate 2.4 and 5GHz guest bands as well. The Deco X60 uses the same SSID for both the frequencies, although it allows you to turn off either GHz band. This is not good for IOT devices since even if you use the Guest 2.4GHz band for IOT devices (to isolate them from data devices), the signal is relatively weak on the Guest band and there is no option to allow or deny the “guest” devices from communicating with each other as is common on even cheaper routers. There is also no option to allow certain “guest” devices access to the main network as in other router software. Also documented (as I found out too late) is that the ethernet backhaul does not work with a number of network switche (Tp-link mentions problems with the D-Link switches but I also had problems with several unmanaged Netgear switches. I even had problems maintaining a wired backhaul with my Tp-link “dumb” switch. The satellite Deco keeps losing a signal over the wired backhaul, slowing speeds when it switches to the wifi backhaul since the X60 only has two channels so the 5GHz shares backhaul load (I did not think this would be an issue because I have whole house ethernet). I gave it a 4 rating for Amazon’s “easy to use” ranking as it is extremely easy to set up, but it doesn’t always work or hold its connection. If that wasn’t enough, the worst is yet to come. In my use case, the biggest problem with the management Deco App is that it does not allow you to pre-map IP reservations. This is a real PITA when you have many IOT devices. It would not be such a problem but for another problem with the management software. Specifically, you can only associate an IP address with a MAC address once the device shows up as connected to the Deco. The problem is, in researching this further, and based on my experience, it seems to be a common and known issue that the Deco often fails to show the device as connected in the app even when the device is clearly connected and operating. When this occurs, you will not know the device IP assigned by DHCP to even reserve it. This is particularly problematic if you need to know the device IP to access the device software to program it using its LAN address as you will not be able to find its IP address without using a third party network scanner of some type. This is really stupid on Tp-link’s part especially given the known problem that the software has in accurately showing what devices are actually connected to the network. Anyways, all venting aside, the tradeoff between automated convenience vs. versatility and utility makes this a good mesh system for those who just want a basic, bare bones mesh system that is easy to set up. It gives good range and reasonable speeds when using the 5GHz band, but is not well suited if you have a variety of device that require 2.4GHz (e.g., it constantly loses connection with my Epson Ecotank Wifi printer even though it is in the next room only about 15 ft away with one typical wood construction drywall between them). For the casual “typical” user, this is probably a good fit as throughput is good on the 5Ghz band (at least for the non-guest channel) as I was getting about 430-470mb/s out of 500 prior to fiber. When fiber is installed (we postponed installation until I can sort out more of the problems with this mesh system) I will see if all the hassles in getting IOT devices to work with the Deco X60 was worth it with regards to throughput etc. Until then, I cannot recommend this system to anyone who is thinking of using this as a network for their HA system. So 1-2 stars for an experienced user due to software lack of flexibility and utility, but maybe 4 stars for a novice user due to its simplicity. ... show more

  • I have no dead zones now!
Style: WiFi 6 Mesh, Dual-Band
This router has made my life better. Previously, I had to run two separate wireless access points to cover my house completely. Now, this mesh network handles it, and at faster speeds. The App is good as well. (But, there is still room for improvement.) Pros: The app will notify you when someone connects to your Wi-Fi. The child safety tools do work well. (Once you figure out how to use them.) You can limit what websites they visit, and have the Wi-Fi automatically disconnect all of their devices from the internet at bed time. Best of all, you can give certain devices priority on the network. My zoom meetings no longer have poor signal or degraded video quality when someone else in the house starts streaming movies. My work computer is set with network priority, so if the network is busy, they get the buffering instead of my meeting. Cons: (This really only applies to techs, gamers, and geeks.) I wish the app had easier ways to access more advanced settings. I am an IT technician, so I have setup my fair share of networks. For the average house, this is going to make your life easier. For technicians like me who want to squeeze out every last bit of speed from the network, the controls are a little limiting. But the average person would not likely need access to these settings, so it makes sense they are harder to find and use. ... show more

  • Was problematic for my particular circumstances
Style: WiFi 6 Mesh, Dual-Band
These may be the answer for you, but were not for me. Our house has lots of interior brick walls and wi-fi has been problematic. We switched to a fiber optic connection and bought these. Our experience: created a headache with our Sonos. Because Sonos doesn't see the wi-fi created by the TP (bad abbreviation, at least in the U.S.) link as the same wi-fi signal that was created by the modem. So I was constantly needing to switch between two different wi-fi signals to access Sonos. Someone more tech savvy may be able to put those problems to bed, but I wasn't. Also had to reboot more than I would like to have done. Here's another caveat - the first being my limited technical abilities - the fiber optic never performed as advertised and CenturyLink tech support is from one of the lower circles of hell. So I was never able to sort out which troubles I had were from the toilet paper link and which were coming from the fiber optic connection. Went back to a cable internet connection and haven't needed a wifi booster. Maybe this setup will be the bee's knees for you. I don't want to generalize from my experience. Just consider this a cautionary tale. ... show more
