  • Very Happy With This Router
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
My previous WiFi router was built into my cable modem. It was pretty basic and only provided a 2 ghz band signal with just 8 channels to pick from. I used it to connect my Nest thermostat to an app on my smartphone and to connect my Amazon Fire TV stick to the Internet. I also used it to connect our smartphones and our 3 laptops to the Internet. It worked fine for a while. But then, the WiFi started to disappear every 2-3 days. When I logged into the cable modem, I could see the WiFi signal turned on, but nothing was happening. So, I had to reboot the modem and then everything was fine again. I got tired of this every few days - especially when we are traveling and gone for a while, I like to make sure my furnace or air conditioner is working while we are gone. So, I log into the Nest thermostat where I can see what the house temp is and make any changes I might want. If the WiFi disappears, I don't know if it because the power is off (we live in the boonies) or there is another problem at home which then gets me worried. I don't like dealing with the cable company as they are hard to get someone to come to your house and service their equipment. So, I decided to look for an external router that had more features and would be more reliable. Looking at the reviews, I picked this one. Sams Club sells this same router for $40 more, so this Amazon price is a good deal. It came quickly. It comes with hook-up diagrams that give you different ways to set it up. One way is to use an app on your smartphone and set it up through the app. We have neighbors who installed a different brand of router at their house recently and tried to use that router's app to configure their router and had all kinds of trouble. When they called me, I suggested not using the app but connecting their computer directly to the router and configuring it that way. It worked for them just fine. Having gone through their experience, I decided to go the direct route and just hook my laptop into this router and do the setup as a direct connection. The documentation that comes with the router shows you how. This router has a step-by-step procedure to set the thing up, so you just go through the steps. On the last step, you have to connect the router to your cable modem so it has access to the Internet. You have to reboot it once - and then you are good to go. What I like about this router is that it has both 2 ghz and 5 ghz bands you can use. Most everyone in my neighborhood uses the 2 Ghz band and so the channels are crowded. The 5 Ghz band had only one other household using it, so plenty of spare channels available. There are free apps you can download from the google play store for your smartphone to check WiFi signals around your neighborhood, so you can see who is using what band and channel and pick one that you like. But this is for the more technically inclined and you can get by with the defaults that the router sets up for you and you probably won't have any problems. It is useful to change the password in your router and not leave it as the default. That makes it harder to hack for those crappy hackers who want their hands on your personal info and bank accounts. So, once the router was set up and it connected to the Internet, everything worked great. There is a set of lights on top of the router that show you when everything is working and that you are connected to the Internet. My Amazon Fire TV stick saw the WiFi signal and I set it up on the 5 Ghz band since I was seeing a 100% signal strength. The Nest thermostat also saw the 5 Ghz band, so I have it connected there. Our laptops are too old to use the 5 Ghz band, so they are set up on the 2 Ghz band. Our smartphones see both bands so I am using the 5 Ghz band for those too. Nice to have a choice. So far, after several weeks of operation - no problems at all. This router has been very reliable and I am extremely happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Blazing Speed - long range!
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
I was getting dropouts and occasional low speed issues with my Spectrum supplied modem/wifi router. I added a 9 year old wifi router to replace the wifi from Spectrum - still had some dropouts. I had Spectrum service come out a month ago and they replaced the cable to the modem/router - still some dropouts. A couple weeks ago, I took the old Spectrum modem/router to a Spectrum store and swapped it for a new spectrum modem (no wifi - save $5!), but was still experiencing issues, so I started looking at routers, including mesh systems. Since this TP-Link router was significantly less money than a mesh system, I decided to try it first. My house is 2400 sq ft, but it's not spread out like a ranch. I do use wifi in the backyard frequently, along with streaming tv in the living room and the bonus room over the garage. I put this TP-Link AC2600 router in the kitchen on top of the cabinets (same place as the old router) - it's fairly centrally located between the backyard, living room and the bonus room upstairs (and you can't see it!). Set up was fairly easy using the iphone app. I reused the names and passwords of the old wifi, and my existing wifi gadgets hooked up automatically (wifi cameras, plugs, firetv sticks...). So - I pay the lowest price for internet only and I'm supposed to get "up to 200mbps". As I sit here in the living room, on the 5gHz band, I'm getting 243mbps and on the 2.4gHz band, I get 107mbps! I got rid of both my ethernet-over-powerline and my wifi extender, since the 5.0gHz band now reaches both tvs. On the old router and Spectrum router, I couldn't use 5.0 much since the range was so limited. To say I'm thrilled with this router is an understatement! If anything changes, I'll update this review. ... show more

  • Used as an access point, works fine, slightly quirky interface
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
I only need one wireless router (one-BR apt) but because it's an old building with thick brick and concrete walls (even on the inside), it needs to be positioned just right and that's not near my modem/router. That being the case, I have run an Ethernet cable from the non-wireless router to this one and positioned it where it works well. I have been using an older TP-Link wireless router, also as an AP, and never had any problem with it, but wanted something faster, and this was on sale for $110. Because I'm only using it as an AP, I can't really address all of the capabilities, however a couple of things: PROS: I was able to update the firmware *without* losing all of my settings, which is a big deal to me because I use MAC filtering and didn't want to have to re-enter them again. My older devices all required starting from scratch. Something else I like, though not everyone may, is that there is only one list of MAC addresses, and it's used for both 2.4 and 5GHz bands. Easy to turn off all of the lights, which is good because I use it in my bedroom. However, the instructions say "press this button" (though that's on the peel-off film) but what it should say is "hold this down until they go off". Still, it works, and includes the power LED also. I've only had it a few weeks, but I've yet to have a device drop a link to it for no reason. (I had a never-used Netgear Nighthawk X4 sitting in a box and tried that but gave up after a few days because for no reason I could discover, devices would drop their connection to it and that nixed it for me.) CONS More things seem to require a reboot (or a very long delay) than I require in past routers, and the reboot on this is very slow. I think I had expected it to be faster than my older ones, but that's not the case. Still, it's not necessary to do it often. Minor thing, but I found the interface on my older TP-Link to be more intuitive, which is odd as it was much more complicated. This one is simpler but feels less well thought out. All in all, for what I paid, this feels like a nice competent router. At $140 (usual selling point it seems) I'm not sure I wouldn't look around a bit more. ... show more

  • Works Great until is does't
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
I used this flawlessly for about 3 months. I already had a router from my Internet Service Provider (ISP) so I just used this as an extender. I recently changed my ISP and started using this for its designed purpose, a Wireless Access Point (WAP). It worked great, setup the WAN connection with no issues, setup the Wifi with no issues. About 30 minutes after getting my everything setup (smart home, ring doorbell, all Mobile phones, tablets, Roki, Apple TV, Smart Plugs) I went downstairs to get online and play some games. The router stopped broadcasting Wifi and all the Ethernet ports died. I rebooted the unit and everything came back up. Phew.. It's just a glitch.. right.. nope.. This has happened several times and continues to happen. I reset the device more than 3 times setting up everything new. As soon as I utilize the Ethernet ports is when everything goes south. Wifi continues to stop broadcasting and the Ethernet ports just die. No DHCP, no ability to connect to the router to troubleshoot. So I just have to reboot the router and use it while its up and then reboot it again every time it decides it no longer wants to work. Support is a joke.. I get them having to go through the proper steps but after trying a few very remedial things they gave up and said they would need me to go through mail support. I am very frustrated tat this point. I will be contacting my ISP and having them send out there WAP and just keep pinging support until i get a refund a replacement unit. TP Link products have been really good to use in the past, guess I just got a bad one. Seems to just get overloaded and stops working. OH.. and the logging is a joke.. Diagnostic is just ping and tracert. So no real diagnostic for the device itself. Maybe they have some proprietary way to get in and take a look, but they havent gotten to that. I will be calling back today.. hopefully I can get a replacement unit sent out.. but I think since my ISP will provide a unit I may just request for a refund. ... show more

  • High-end quality without the high price
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
What an amazing router at such a great price! I did a lot of research before I bought this. Because my previous router was a TP-Link router also, I was skeptical about this one at first. I was actually leaning towards a $300 Asus gaming router (I don’t game that much, I just wanted something powerful). But truth is, my previous TP-Link was just end of life—almost five years old. I’m pretty certain that WiFi tech was going out. I found an article titled something like “Best 2020 Routers” by Tom’s Guide and this was his #1 ranked router out of 10! After reading some other reviews and resources about it, I pulled the trigger. This router quadrupled my speeds (which wasn’t hard to do I suppose since my previous internet speed was so intermittent and slow). I am extremely satisfied with this router. I’m a lv 4 IT engineer for a big company, and I can tell you that this is a quality product. You are getting the quality of these expensive gaming routers for half or quarter the cost. And the newer admin interface is very easy and simple. The setup for this router was easier than I’ve ever experienced. I have 25-30 wireless connections by the way and this thing is handling it like a champ. My other router really struggled with that. I highly recommend this whether you’re technical or not, and whether you’re needing lots of bandwidth or just for basic internet usage. ... show more

  • Great router for a
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
We had an old router that my wife and I used in our university days and were just too cheap to buy a new one, despite the fact that our home was bigger than any apartment we have lived in previously. We noticed that on the other side of our house (about 40 ft from one side to the other with several old lathe and plaster walls in between and one floor up) we would get horrible signal. This old router would only provide about 40 mbs when right next to it, and when in our bedroom (on the other side of the house), maybe 1-2 megabytes per second (when tested using google’s speed test). Passable for Youtube, but it wasn’t til we were both working from home that we discovered how thready and weak the signal was. We purchased the tp-link archer A10 and were very happy with the difference. In these far extremes of our home, which were once 1-2 Mbs—if we got signal at all, we were getting ~50 Mbs on the 2.4 GHz channel. On the 5 GHz channel, we were getting 100+. The 5 GHz channel was a bit weak compared the 2.4 GHz, but that is to be expected by the inherent differences in the signals. Even so, it is still plenty strong enough on the second floor and for farther reaches, the 2.4 GHz band stays strong. ... show more

  • Old School but New School Simple Setup
Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
Background: I am a Cisco CCNP, and have been working in Networking since the days of Vampire taps, Token Ring and FDDI. I know my way around networks old and new. When my 75yr old mothers Linksys WiFi router failed mid-pandemic and across the country, I was fearing the "remote" walk through and setup of a new router. So many of the current routers by the big names like Linksys, Netgear, Asus, D-Link, Goole all want to 'intrude' on your privacy & setup via cloud cloud cloud and fancy phone apps. -Or their interface looks like a bad Tron interface with too much convoluted cloud and AI marketing related features. TPLink offers an old school, SIMPLE, setup interface that I was able to walk a non-technical person through in about 10 minutes over the phone. Yes, TPLink has an OPTIONAL new school 'app', and the final screen of the setup asks you to sign up for an OPTIONAL, cloud service, but you can skip it. This router CAN be installed 100% standalone, free from vendor meddling and preventing sending information about your network to China. In every way, compared to the Linksys it replaced this router is simply better. From a range perspective, this is installed at the absolute furthest point in her house, up a floor, from her TV's FireStick. No issue streaming Netflix, HBO, etc from 200 feet up and over through walls, ceilings and a utility room. Easily covers 1700 sq. ft. Way to go TPLink for keeping things simple but with the necessary modern features. ... show more

Style: AC2600, Dual-Band
Download the Tether app. Setup is fast and simple. The range is excellent. I have a TP-Link TL-WA855RE extender over 100 feet away for my Ring Floodlight cam. Great signal. There are 7 devices using the router. Speeds in 5ghz are over 200 Mbps. I had the Router of the year for 2018. The Asus RT-86U. After less than 1 year the 2.4 ghz band stopped working. I needed a router until Ausu sent a replacement, over 3 weeks. I saw this TP-Link on Amazon for under 120.00. My Asus RT-86U replacement arrived. It's in the closet as a backup. The TP-Link is much easier to set up. The signal is great, as good as the Asus, and it's much simpler to use than the Asus. It provides just as good a service as the 200.00 Asus. I would buy another. ... show more
