    • Can’t reopen umbrella unless you fully retract and reset the springs – and this takes some effort.

This umbrella has a push button that makes it a snap to open and close. One push and it pops open. One push and the canopy folds close. But also be aware that the umbrella doesn’t retract on its own. You need to use two hands ( or one hand and your hip) to pull the canopy section back to the base. This manual action resets the springs so the umbrella is once again ready to open with the push button. I’m not a frail person, but I found it took a little bit of effort to pull the canopy back to the base. So this is not an umbrella you want to give to a child or an elderly person. Another problem is the Velcro strap that holds the umbrella closed – it is just not long enough. It is a struggle to twist and compress the fabric and ribs enough to secure the two ends of the Velcro. It really needs to be 1/2 inch longer. But I do like the water shedding coating on the fabric. The water just beads up and rolls off the fabric. No more messy puddles of water on the floor of my car. The umbrella is also a nice size both when open and closed. It is small and light enough to carry around in my backpack (you never know when it is going to rain), and large enough to offer protection from the heaviest downpour. ... show more

I love Totes umbrella for their longevity and construction, and while I cannot say how long this particular umbrella will last, it seems as sturdy as the others that I've owned. The umbrella folds to a relatively compact 12 3/4 inch long cylinder and fastens closed with a Velcro tab. It opens with a whoosh when I press the button and collapses when I press the button again. (It does not get compacted when closed -- you have to do that part.) The polyester material does indeed repel water as advertised to keep the fabric as dry as possible. It's not "never wet," but rather briefly wet. It dries quickly. The rubberized handle is especially comfortable and slip-free with its pocked texture. It does take effort to pull the umbrella flaps tight enough against the body to engage the Velcro closure, but it can be done without problem. This umbrella isn't as large as its extra-large cousin that measures only an inch longer in the handle but which extends to almost golf umbrella size; however, two people can squeeze under this one in an emergency. -- Debbie Lee Wesselmann ... show more

This seems like a sturdy, well-made umbrella. I really like the ease with which it opens and closes at the push of a button (the button extends and opens the umbrella, but does not retract it when it closes). The handle that tapers outward at the base will make it easy to hold on to even in strong winds. As for the "NeverWet" fabric, it works well but isn't as revolutionary as the description would lead you to believe. The performance is actually quite similar to my LifeTek Umbrella with Teflon (which also has similar push button open and close); it doesn't stay completely dry, but the water droplets that remain on it are smaller than they would be on untreated fabric. I also like the wideness of the velcro strap, which helps to keep the closed umbrella more compact. If you're questioning whether it's really worth spending this much on an umbrella when you could easily find one for half the price or less, my answer is: absolutely. You don't want an umbrella that turns inside out every time the wind blows. You don't want to struggle with finding the release to close it when you're trying to get in the car in the rain. You don't want to have to worry about replacing it when it gives out on you in a few months (or being stuck in the rain without one at the moment it gives out). ... show more
