We have these on a small arbor vitae on our patio in place of an indoor tree this year. The 72 foot strand is just right for a 5 foot tree so if your tree is larger you could add the second strand. I plan to use the second strand at our cabin. These lit up out of the box as soon as I covered the solar panel. The lights themselves are very small but surprisingly bright after only a few hours of spotty sunlight. Waiting to see how long they last tonight but so far look great! UPDATE: SUBTRACTING STARS. THE FIRST DAY WE USED THESE THEY LASTED MOST OF THE NIGHT. THE NEXT DAY THEY LASTED A FEW HOURS. I MOVED THEM TO OPTIMIZE SUNLIGHT AND THEY LASTED A FEW HOURS. THEN TONIGHT IN THE SAME LOCATION THEY LASTED LESS THAN AN HOUR. I CAN ONLY ASSUME ONCE THE FACTORY CHARGE WEARS OUT THE BATTERIES DO NOT CHARGE EVEN AFTER SUN ALL DAY. VERY DISAPPOINTING AS THEY LOOK VERY PRETTY FOR THE FLEETING TIME THEY WORK. BUT NOT EVEN WORTH CALLING THEM A CHRISTMAS DECORATION ESPECIALLY FOR THIS AMOUNT OF MONEY. This is the second time I've purchased lights like this. As they were shipped, the last set lasted me 3 winters, while also being used during the summer the last 2 years. This last summer they stopped turning on, having had them for awhile, and wanting to expand a bit on my lights, I decided to purchase another set. I do wish there was some sort of easier way to select the patterns, but that's a minor detail to me, they're easy enough to match up just switching the power off and on again. They do get a bit overshadowed by the lights I have on my inside windows, however, I recently discovered that they do not ship full of batteries. The compartment has room for 3 Rechargeable AA batteries, but only includes 1 on shipment. Now, the image I posted is both sets of lights with only one battery charged. ( I just purchased new batteries tonight and don't want to insert them before they can be charged during the day) The lights come on and hold their current level of brightness for about 4-5 hours. Around the 6 hours mark they are noticeably dimmer, and around the 8 hour mark they are off for the night. That said, I still love these on my house, even with only one battery in them, I'll be installing more batteries tomorrow and hoping they get a bit brighter, but won't complain if they don't. ... show more

We bought these for our mini tree growing in the back yard. It’s about 6 foot tall with full branches. This was just the right amount of lights. We enjoyed coming home to see the tree lit up. Highly recommend.

These worked okay for a season. The lights were dimmer than I expected and lasted about 5 hours overnight. The lights stopped working after about a year.

    • Do you get enough sun?

If you intend to use these as Christmas lights, there is one big thing you should consider: Do you live in a place that gets ample sun in the winter? I live in Arkansas, where winter is not a season with an exceptional amount of sunlight. The lights are also detecting when it is night to turn on. So, the more gradual the transition is into night, the longer it takes for them to acknowledge the change and turn on. They design these to run until they drain the power, which means they will not be lit through most of the night. I would say that is a good thing. However, I completely and totally love the idea of solar powered lights, and theses are excellent for what they are (I bought two more after my first one). The parts to help stake the solar panel are kind of flimsy, but I did not find this to be an issue for installation nor for overall appearance (for the first year of use). Reusing them every year will probably mean at some point applying some black tape to the mechanism that adjusts the tilt of the solar panel. This does not bother me. These have enough sophistication in their appearance that they warrant permanent installation, such as stapled along the inside of a screened-in porch, or integrated into a seating area in your garden. The biggest strength of this product is how it looks when it gets a good charge, given the excellent array of settings. In fact, the settings are so diverse that I think you could string these inside of a frosted plastic tube and create an effect outdoor like you would normally see at an indoor movie theatre. It has some settings that are really slow in a way that makes them appropriate to use in other ways after the holidays. So, I am pleased and I recommend this item, but just be aware that your choice to go with off-grid Christmas lights means that you have to sacrifice the reliability that the lights will do their thing when you pull up to your house. Do you have a young child that goes to bed before the sun does? If so, they may not see these shine very often. You can't just put these out at Thanksgiving to get a jump on sunlight leading up to Christmas, because they drain their batteries completely overnight. Cool product, but just plan wisely or you will be like me running out there with a flashlight occasionally just to get an hour of my son seeing his home's holiday lights. ... show more
