  • A good all around daily sport watch
Color: Blackout
I'm mainly a Casio fan exclusively, GShocks in particular, and I also own a solid Wenger military field watch (analog, about eight years old now) and a new Armitron sport watch I just reviewed the other day, also great, but Timex usually doesn't interest me, or I've had doubts about their quality. However, they do produce some decent sport watches, the IronMan series, etc., and now the Expedition series which are sort of GShock competitors. I couldn't find any Timex selection near home in LI NY, because Sears is gone, and Walmart had zero watches in stock, and even Target had exactly four (too tiny) Timex watches in stock, so clearly Amazon is the way to go now. Ran across this Expedition on Amazon, and loved the look of it, and size. I got mine yesterday, for $30-40 this is a great watch, it's durable, buttons are great, Indiglo is great, easy to set up, comfortable, and has some bulk to it. The display is a tad hard to read in some conditions, but the backlight is great. It has somewhat of a tactical look, but it's really more of an everyday, casual sports, hiking, driving, travel type of watch. Also the water resistance rating is 100M so that's cool. Strap included is solid, and comfy. For the money I think this rivals many of the budget Casios. Those cheaper Casio Royale World Time watches are also great for the money, but I bought one and the case is smaller and a lot flimsier than this Timex, by far. I still think the Casio though, is also a fine value and a goodlooking piece. But if you want rugged this is a better choice. I had this perception of Timex as a company who had let their quality go downhill for years, but now I'm not so sure, this watch, on the surface, seems to be quality for money, but time will tell, you cannot tell how solid or reliable a watch is unless you give it a few years of wear and tear. That being said I'm not beating the heck out of my watches and tend to switch off all the time, so I'm kind of babying my watch collection. Still, even if you work in construction, the military, handyman work, or welding, etc., you can probably beat the heck out of this watch and if it lasts five-seven years, you're doing ok. ... show more

  • Exceeds expectations
Color: Green/Black
I have 2 other perfectly good watches 1 a 15 year old Fossil analog Chrono and 1 5 year old Seiko analog Chrono (both weigh a ton) but wanted to go digital for an everyday knock around watch. I looked around and decided to give this Timex Expedition a try and I'm glad I did. Most important thing the price was right, I liked the look and size it's so lightweight forget it's there. The Blackout display does take some getting used to but so does a new pair of glasses, the Indiglo works perfect night or day. All in all this seems a good watch but only Time will tell I've only had it a few days so far. ... show more

  • Solid, dark display. Light works great tho.
Color: Green/Black
Solid watch. Display is almost too dark to see in the daylight. The indiglo works great tho.

  • Durability and price.
Color: Blackout
This watch is tough, durable and wonderfully priced. I just want to know what time it is and the date at a glance. The watch does both and seems to be tough enough to work in every day.

  • INDIGLO button on the front
Color: Green/Black
I love that the INDIGLO button is on the front, where it is most easily reached when dark. The digits on the display are larger and easier to read than my other IRONMAN watches, the dark background enhances readability. I had to give up the radio-controlled time setting feature on my Expedition, but it was worth it. ... show more

  • I've been wearing constantly for 2 years - what a great watch!
Good size, very rugged, intuitive functions and easy to read numbers. A great tool. Best of all, the comfortable plastic band is showing no signs of wear or tearing. This is a huge improvement over my other Timex watch bands, which fell apart in under a year.

  • Timex

*** Update 5/2/13*** It is a pleasure to report that it has been almost 4.5 years and this product is still working flawlessly. I used it on a 5.5 mile run and it is as good as the day I got it. See comments to this review -- others have made good tips that I agree with. The bottom line -- if you are still using it after this amount of time, you are either ready for an upgrade or at least won't mind having to buy another unit! Original Review: I'd hoped that getting this new running gadget would encourage me to exercise more often. So far so good. I asked for this for Christmas and, well, it has accomplished it's primary function for me... I've been running almost every day since I got it. I was turned off by the gigantic size of some HRMs, and did not need something to keep track of splits as I run on my treadmill at home and the gym. As a heart rate monitor, the functionality is pleasantly simple. It tracks your heart rate for the whole workout. You hit the big button to start, and it goes to work tracking the length of time, the average heartbeat, and the peak. While you are running, it displays your current heartbeat. That's it -- but sometimes it's better to keep it simple. I should point out that, as a watch, the watch piece tells the time and date only. If you want/need splits and a stopwatch, you should look elsewhere. Here's some other thoughts: I was worried that the strap would break but realized after a couple workouts that I was probably wearing it a little too tight. Since adjusting, it is much more comfortable, has not fallen off, and, as a guy, you *almost* forget that you have it on. My wife cracked up when I took my shirt off after a recent workout. She said that, from the back, it looked like I was wearing a bra (or Manzierre, or Bro, if you prefer). I had no original intention of wearing it while NOT working out, but I've found it addictive, and have enjoyed observing how drinking a cup of coffee while sitting at my desk does raise my heart rate about 10-15 beats per minute on average. Also, as I've started to get in a little better shape over the last 3 weeks, I see that I have to run either farther or faster to get my heart rate up to certain thresholds. And, now my heart rate does not go up as high from merely climing the stairs at home. I believe that these insights, among others, are very encouraging for someone who is just getting back in shape. The encouragement aspect combined with the simplicity makes this a great starter heart rate monitor for anyone considering. ... show more
