Did two batches of peaches. First we followed the instructions. Then we tried several different temps. But regardless of our efforts to try everything, the only peaches that dried nicely were the back third. Everything else either turned black or didn’t dry or both. Which was very weird. I have used those cheap plastic dehydrator machines before. They work and all, but there is an enormous difference between those machines and this machine. Setting up the trays is about the same, just space things out so there is air flow around the items. Slide in the trays and then the difference comes in. The plastic things have an on switch and a little knob that lets you set the temperature range. This allows you to set specific temperatures and set specific times. Then as I walk through the room I can look in through the glass door and watch the progress of what I am drying. This machine does get hotter than I thought it would get. My plastic unit would get hot, but nothing I couldn't pick up. This gets hotter than I want to touch. I don't think it's an unsafe heat for the area around the machine, just don't want to use bare hands to pick the thing up when it's hot. Also, while I don't think the heat will cause any scorching of the countertop, I put a 2 inch bamboo cutting board underneath the machine. So far no scorching, but it it is going to scorch something I would rather it be the replaceable cutting board. I have not tried many of the recopies in the book yet. All I had ever done before was beef or meat jerky. A buddy is an avid hunter and has about my skill level for butchering, so he ends up making a lot of jerky. He likes to grind and make jerky from that. I prefer using large cuts sliced down for jerky. Both are good and both are tasty. I'm sure as deer season comes up this year, this machine will get good use there. One other thing I notice different between this and the cheap plastic machines; the fan is in the back and it winds up making the back dry quicker than the front. So you need to rotate the trays half way through. Now I'm going to try some vegetables. I am a huge zucchini fan, so that is first up on the non-meat dehydration schedule. Overall, this has the look of a quality piece of equipment sitting on your counter. And it works like a champ. Set up the trays, slide them in, set the temp and timer. I set the timer for about half the dry time so it reminds me to rotate the trays and I can inspect the process at the turn point. Then I can set the remainder time. ... show more

I have been a lifelong dehydrator and light "prepper" - not because I think the world will go down the tubes, but just because I like to have things available at all times and really don't care for processed foods which tend to have too many chemicals added. That said, I have had several dehydrators over the years. This one is better than most for several reasons 1) LOTS of shelves. If you are going to dry anything, you might as well go whole hog and do a lot. Once it is dehydrated, it lasts a long time, especially if you know how to store it properly after drying. 2) The shelves are metal mesh, which doesn't collapse when they are laden with food and it allows a lot of air to pass through. 3) The unit comes with trays to use with fruit puree dehydration - this is not a given with most dehydrators. The trays allow you to puree fruit, dehydrate it and essentially make your own "fruit roll-ups" for the kiddos without all the added sugar and chems. 4) Extra fine mesh comes with it... this is necessary for a lot of the things you will make. For example - ground beef, seasoned and extruded into strips, make really nice "beef jerky" but if you were to extrude it onto the metal shelf, the soft ground beef will wrap around the wire mesh and never come off in one piece. The fine silicone mesh allows for it to sit on the fine mesh until it is semi-dry and then you can remove the mesh and put it directly onto the metal mesh trays to dry fully. 5) It has an adjustable temperature control (LED) which most units have, but this has a timer setting, which is nice because it shuts off when the timer is done... face it, sometimes trying to remember to turn something off 3 days later is a chore and luckily, over dehydrated stuff is not a big deal... it is not like burning something... it just gets drier. 6) This dehydrator has a strong fan, which helps the drying process go faster. 7) Nice recipe book which has lots of good ideas from meats to desserts and snacks. You can always find more recipes on the internet, but this is nice. The "not so great" - The unit gets hot when drying, but most do because it is basically a low temp oven with a strong fan that runs for days. You just need to accommodate that fact by putting it in an area where you are not heating up your house unless it is Winter, in that case, put it right next to Grandma so she won't complain about the cold. Overall, a very nice dehydrator that will get a lot of use in my house. ... show more

I bought this brand due to rankings. That was a mistake. It only handles 12lbs which is for me not a lot for 12 trays. Very odd how to turn on. I have to turn on light first for the unit to turn on. We now get to performance. There is no way to produce quality jerky when the device will not cook evenly. I was really excited about this purchase but left in utter disappointment. I do this for a living so I know dehydrators and this one besides its”dual fans and 1300 watts” is garbage. ... show more
