Description

From the Booker Prize finalist, author of The Island of Missing Trees, an enchanting new tale about three characters living along two great rivers, all connected by a single drop of water. "Make place for Elif Shafak on your bookshelf. Make place for her in your heart too. You won't regret it."—Arundhati Roy, winner of the Booker Prize In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. With an abusive, alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur’s only chance of escaping destitution is his brilliant memory. When his gift earns him a spot as an apprentice at a leading publisher, Arthur’s world opens up far beyond the slums, and one book in particular catches his interest: Nineveh and Its Remains. In 2014 Turkey, Narin, a ten-year-old Yazidi girl, is diagnosed with a rare disorder that will soon cause her to go deaf. Before that happens, her grandmother is determined to baptize her in a sacred Iraqi temple. But with the rising presence of ISIS and the destruction of the family’s ancestral lands along the Tigris, Narin is running out of time. In 2018 London, the newly divorced Zaleekah, a hydrologist, moves into a houseboat on the Thames to escape her husband. Orphaned and raised by her wealthy uncle, Zaleekah had made the decision to take her own life in one month, until a curious book about her homeland changes everything. A dazzling feat of storytelling, There Are Rivers in the Sky entwines these outsiders with a single drop of water, a drop which remanifests across the centuries. Both a source of life and harbinger of death, rivers—the Tigris and the Thames—transcend history, transcend fate: “Water remembers. It is humans who forget.” Read more

  • Excellent Novel
This book is beautifully written and covers many sociopolitical themes from the past and in the present. The 3 characters are craftily interwoven throughout the book and this adds to the suspense and keeps your interest. One of the best books I have read!

  • Another wonderful book by Elif Shafak, albeit with some shortcomings
4.5 stars, really, but I've decided to round down instead of up. I read "The Architect's Apprentice" last year and was enthralled. The author's ability to take me to another world and time, and to write so beautifully and captivatingly were astonishing. So when I saw the great reviews this book received, particularly on Amazon, I was sold. In "There Are Rivers in the Sky" Ms. Shafak does it again; she is a fabulous story-teller, and once again she takes us to other worlds and times - and in this case it's multiple worlds and times: London in the 1800s, Mesopotamia in pre-history and at various other times, etc., and brings the stories together more or less seamlessly. Her writing is lush and engrossing. I can see how she may become one of my favorite authors. So why not a 5? Well, the work is a bit too much; it is too full of metaphors and similes, using several where one or even two would suffice. Also, Ms. Shafak seems insistent to make all sorts of points, particularly in the last section of the book, where organ "harvesting" and other issues are brought into the plot. While they are worthy subjects, introducing them in the final pages comes across as an afterthought that just doesn't work. Finally, there are sections of the book that seemed a bit overlong and pointless. Still, it's a very VERY worthwhile book that I encourage others to read and savor, and I will continue to read her books. ... show more

  • interlacing of lives with water
This is an extremely well written book with lots of historical references and vivid accounts of events. There are several time period stories that ultimately are laced together using the hydrological cycle. A satisfying read with real life endings.

  • Probably the best Historical fiction I've read
I don't think there are words to adequately explain just how much this book affected me. I'm pretty sure this is the best historical fiction novel I've ever read. I kept talking about it the whole time I was reading it. I told my family. I posted about it in my Facebook groups. I shared it with friends. This is a must read! The amount of research this must have taken is astounding. The intricate way the three stories were woven together was breathtaking. I fell in love with Narin, Arthur, and Zakheelah. It's just such a moving story. Learning about London and the Thames during Victorian times. Learning about the history of the Yazidis. Learning about the Mesopotamian history. The clash of cultures. Who does history belong to? The responsibility of humanity. It is heartbreaking to realize there are horrors happening today. This book has profoundly affected me. It was heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. Read this if you like: - book club reads with lots of great topics for discussion - historical fiction - books that will break you and enlighten you ... show more

  • a history lesson, a love story, a multi-generational family saga, BRILLIANT
I could go as far as to say that this is my favorite book by Shafak so far. Loaded with historical facts, woven with tenderness and humanity, I will remember these characters for a long while to come.

  • Leaves you wanting more
Great read. This book was written beautifully connecting the past to the present. The history of Mesopotamia is fascinating. A lot of the societal cruelties to land, water and people are similar to what has happened to other regions around the world.

  • Un-relatable characters
This book was not up to the author's usual greatness. Two of her other books (The Architect's Apprentice and 40 Rules of Love) are masterpieces, and I think everyone should read them. Then "There are Rivers in the Sky" was different. I applaud the author for, as usual, introducing us to issues and cultures that we may have missed. But, the characters in this book were over-the-top. They we either too good or too bad. I was not able to relate to them. And, as a result I was not drawn into this book. Hopefully her next book will be back to her usual greatness. ... show more

  • I would give this book 10 stars if I could
I just finished today THERE ARE RIVERS IN GHE SKY. This book made a very powerful impact on me and I will sing its praises to everyone I know. This very historical novel is so gorgeously written and packed with facts. This is my second book by Shafak after loving THE ISLAND OF THE MISSING TREES. I will definitely read her other novel as well. I cannot say how much this book about the way water connects us through the centuries has impressed me. There are 3 main characters and several secondary but important characters. Shafak starts with a single drop of water falling on a king thousands of years ago to present day Turkey and Iraq and all of former Mesopotamia. Please read this book!!!!! ... show more
