A marvelous debut—imaginative, ambitious, and begging to be savored."" — Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Last ApothecarySteeped in mystery and rich in imagination, an exhilarating historical novel set in Georgian London where the discovery of a mysterious ancient Greek vase sets in motion conspiracies, revelations, and romance.London, 1799. Dora Blake, an aspiring jewelry artist, lives with her odious uncle atop her late parents’ once-famed shop of antiquities. After a mysterious Greek vase is delivered, her uncle begins to act suspiciously, keeping the vase locked in the store’s basement, away from prying eyes—including Dora’s. Intrigued by her uncle’s peculiar behavior, Dora turns to young, ambitious antiquarian scholar Edward Lawrence who eagerly agrees to help. Edward believes the ancient vase is the key that will unlock his academic future; Dora sees it as a chance to establish her own name. But what Edward discovers about the vase has Dora questioning everything she has believed about her life, her family, and the world as she knows it. As Dora uncovers the truth, she comes to understand that some doors are locked and some mysteries are buried for a reason, while others are closer to the surface than they appear.A story of myth and mystery, secrets and deception, fate and hope, Pandora is an enchanting work of historical fiction as captivating and evocative as The Song of Achilles, The Essex Serpent, and The Miniaturist. • Easy read, kept me interested and cute romance

I am a fan of historical fiction and fantasy. This was a nice combo with a little romance. It was a light and easy read. I have recommended it to several friends. Very much enjoyed it.

 • Mash-up of Greek Mythology & Georgian Historical Fiction
Format: Kindle
3.75 stars This is a very enjoyable, atmospheric mystery with loose ties to Greek mythology. Some elements of the mystery were unpredictable, some were wholly predictable. The impeccable sense of place and interesting characters kept me engaged the entire time. I loved Dora. She felt entirely appropriate for her age and station in life during that time. I loved her spunk and determination! And her artistry made me smile. Hermes is the perfect companion for someone like Dora. Edward and Cornelius were fun in their own rights but something felt lacking with both of them. They seemed a shade underdeveloped compared to Dora. It didn't bother me as much with Cornelius as it did with Edward, since we see Edward's PoV from time to time. But I wish I had a stronger understanding of this story before diving in so I could temper my expectations accordingly. The ties to Greek mythology are very loose. I kept looking for stronger ties, more inspiration, to direct the story's trajectory. I thought there might be a magical realism bent to the story, too. Instead, there's a much subtler relationship with the Pandora myth. I wish the author had leaned into that subtlety a bit more and utilized the elements of Pandora's Box to greater effect. It took something away from my experience to constantly look around for more. All told, it's enjoyable and I'd recommend it to fans of historical fiction! ... show more

 • Fun historical fiction with a bit of mystery
Format: Kindle
"Better we women have the upper hand in matters of the heart, don't you think?" I received a NetGalley arc of this book. Thank you to the author and HarperCollins! Pandora follows the story of Pandora Blake who lives with her uncle above the antiquities shop called Blake's Emporium. Dora's uncle, Hezekiah, inherited the shop from Dora's parents after their deaths at a Greek dig site and has driven the formerly well respected shop into the ground with forgeries and fakes. Dora is shocked when an ancient pithos makes its way to the shop. After Edward Lawrence is guided to Dora by a mysterious bearded man, they begin working together to figure out exactly where the pithos came from and how deep her uncle's crimes go. While I did enjoy Pandora, I found that it took me quite a while to get through the book. I found that I enjoyed the mystery of the plot, the development of the characters, and the writing. I just don't think this particular brand of historical fiction is for me. I did enjoy that Dora was a strong female trying to break out on her own. Her struggles with honoring the legacy of her parents while knowing she had to leave their shop behind to truly be independent felt relatable. She had her moments where her youth showed through, particularly in her grudge towards Edward. I felt like these emotions could have been explained in more detail as I, personally, did not see why it was such a big deal if Edward was keeping names out of the paper. I also enjoyed Cornelius's character arc throughout the story. It was great to have an LGBTQ+ character in a historical fiction novel and have the main character accept this person for who they are. The talk felt like a defining moment for both Cornelius and Dora. It will be interesting to see if Susan Stokes-Chapman chooses to write a sequel to this book. We don't know what happens to the pithos at the end of the story, so it seems as if some more chaos is ready to ensue! 3/5 stars from me. ... show more

This historical novel was such a delight to read. I spent several chilly afternoons following the storyline. I’ll look forward to any future works by this same author.

 • Slow Burn
Format: Kindle
The book starts with a cinematic opening sequence, but then takes a meandering path to initiate the "action." But when the truths are revealed one by one, your patience is rewarded. I would have preferred a more detailed resolution. But enjoyable nonetheless.

 • Really good time!
Format: Paperback
Pandora is a new adult Fiction story. It is told from multiple perspectives, one follows Dora, who spends her nights designing jewelry, hoping one day to sell her creations and get out of her uncle's thumb, who became her guardian after a tragic accident took her parents. She knows he has been selling illegal merchandise out of his shop, but things seem to get worse when a large crate arrives. It's taken to the forbidden basement, but Dora has had enough of being kept in the dark and sneaks down one night to discover what's down there. This book was entertaining, I liked the twists and using the old story of Pandora's box in this new story. Dora and Edward make a great team. Edward is a scholar, sweet and giving and has an instant connection with Dora, and wanted to help her in any way he can. I liked his personality and thoughtfulness. He was not overbearing and trying to force and make decisions for Dora but still offering ideas and help. Dora was quiet and did not want to upset or rock the boat, so she tried her best to just go along with a situation and bare it but somethings can’t be ignored and I think she really discovers a voice and dealing with some trauma from past she has put off for a long time and I don't think she could have done it without Edwards unrelenting support and Dora helped him in his own ambitions. I loved following them in this book. I liked the Greek history and antiquities in this story. Super interesting take with some great exploration and archaeological digs made it exciting and mysteries. It was really woven into the story, and I liked where it took us. The jewelry and poetry were described in beautiful detail, so it really painted a picture of how amazing and wanted these pieces were. I would really recommend this book. The writing was good, great pace and some surprise twists. If you're into Greek mythology, exploration and hidden secrets this would be a good one. Trigger warnings: child abuse, animal abuse, gore. I received this advanced ebook, via Netgalley. This review is my own honest opinion. ... show more
