Description

Go beyond the original Shondaland series on Netflix, Queen Charlotte, with this lushly romantic historical romance and Bridgerton prequel novel written by New York Times bestselling authors Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes as the marriage of convenience between Queen Charlotte and King George of England leads to an unexpected love story and a union that transforms society. In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours.Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she, and her King, needed.Because George has secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.Thrust into her new role, Charlotte must navigate the intricate politics of the court―with the newly-titled Lady Danbury at her side―all the while guarding her heart, because she is falling in love with the King…even as he pushes her away. Now, Charlotte must learn to rule, and to understand that she has been given the power to remake society, fulfilling her destiny as Queen. But she also has to fight for the love growing between her and George as people first, royals second. As she says to him: "Fight with me! Fight for me!" Read more

  • Good read
Format: Kindle
I watch a lot of reels on facebook so have seen most of what the story is. They follow the book really well. Good story. Loved how strong Queen Charlotte was and how she basically kept the kingdom together. Too bad the King had whatever disease he had. Good love story.

  • Similar but different....

While the book's diolague follows much of that is the show, it still carries a very important ingredient: an omniscient point of view. It allows the reader to understand certain actions or simple gestures made that many only speculate if they have yet to read the book. And it is not ENTIRELY the same as the show has some diolague delivered differently in the book. I will say that I was NOT happy that a few characters were omitted in the book, thus omitting a subplot we witness in the show, but it doesn't change the heart of the main plot and its characters, King George III and Queen Charlotte. And I am especially happy that the book does include our favorite closing scene, even though the show gives more elaborate reason for the ending. The book focuses not on the news of securing an heir, but to further cement their memory, their story of a great love, despite all odds. ... show more

  • Historical Romance at its Finest
Format: Hardcover
I will begin by saying that I have not watched the Netflix series because I won’t pay for a streaming service. (Yes, I’m cheap.) But I will admit that I am a long-time fan of Julia Quinn, having read almost everything she’s written. Thus, I expected a wonderful story in Queen Charlotte. I wasn’t prepared for it to be a great story. When Charlotte arrives in England, she is almost ready to run away from the impending marriage to the king. And she does just that. She flees out of the cathedral and into a garden where she tries to climb a wall. Sadly she can’t do it. But an ally appears: a tender young man who talks of stars and planets and farming. They bond in a unique way until she learns that he is the king, her intended, who feels the same way about the marriage as she does. For that moment they become Just George and Just Charlotte. It is this moment when the reader is given a glimpse of the true person behind the royal persona. They marry, but their union is fraught with problems. Their story is tender and passionate at the same time; in essence, a coming-of-age story for Charlotte who must grow up in a hurry when faced with her husband’s secret of mental illness. In quiet moments her love for George grows until, with her support, he faces down those who would manage him and takes control of his own life. The story is full of detailed descriptions of medical ‘treatments’ that are barbaric but were quite commonplace when treating illnesses of the mind during that era. They are not for the faint of heart. I enjoyed Lady Danbury, Charlotte’s Lady-In-Waiting, chosen not because of her title or her husband’s support of the royal family, but because of the color of her skin – the Queen Mother wanting dark-skinned Charlotte to have someone of ‘her own kind’ near her. Through Lady Danbury we are exposed to the rampant racism running through the courts and beyond. Cleverly written, I now feel no need to watch the series. ... show more

  • Not my fave from this author
Format: Kindle
Out of all the books I've read that have been set in the Bridgerton world, this was by far my least favorite. The fact that there were chapters told from other POV's, including those of the two servants to George (Reynolds) and Charlotte (Brimsley) as well as from Agatha who we know from later books as the curmudgeonly Lady Dansbury. Reynolds and Brimsley have a relationship in the books, so those who don't favor a MM relationship, especially is historical romances, will likely not care for this part of the book. I personally don't mind that and found their relationship to be one of the better ones in the book. I felt that Charlotte and George spent far too much time apart from one another during the story and therefore, when they finally did get together, their love, on page, wasn't as believable as it could have been otherwise. I also truly despised the role of Princess Augusta, but I guess every book needs a villain type character, and this book it was her. Had this been the first book I read in the Bridgerton series (which chronologically it should be), then I would have been greatly disappointed and likely not continued with the series. Thankfully, I've read almost all of the other books, including all the original 8 Bridgerton books, before reading this one. I also haven't watched any of the show, save for the first episode of season 1 of Bridgerton, so I wasn't biased by that while reading. Although perhaps that might have made me enjoy the book more. Alas, this one story won't disrupt any of my reading of other books from Julia Quinn. ... show more
