  • A short, fun read
Format: Kindle
A cute story in which a woman who is seperated from her husband buys an old travel trailer so she and her teenaged daughter can go camping together for a little bonding time. What they don't know is that the trailer can transport itself and its occupants back in time while they are sleeping. They take a few short trips into the past t, which givge some interesting insights into life in the 1950s and 1960s. But after an argument, the daughter uses the trailer to run away into the past. Her parents must work together to go back into the past, find her and bring her home. This book turned out to be beter than I expected. Decent action, good characters and interesting storyline. The only thing lacking is any real explanation, but that is a minor item. This is more of a fun fantasy than real science fiction. Really nothing to dislike or complain about, ... show more

  • Wow! What a great book!
Format: Kindle
Wow! What a great book! I love time travel movies like T2, Back to The Future, and Time Crimes just to name a few, and I was happily surprised with the story in Time Travel Trailer. This is the first time travel book I've ever read, in fact, it's only the second fiction book I've ever read. I've read plenty of non-fiction books, and I've even written three, but I'm not a fiction reader--although, I have listened to many on audio. Something drew me to this book and I found myself, for the very first time, immersed deeply in a fast-paced, fun tale that kept me turning the pages, or actually, clicking next, on my Kindle. The characters are well-developed and likable. I feel like I've met Dinah, Lynne, and the entire cast. I think this would be an excellent one-hour TV movie. Thank you, Karen Musser Nortman, for opening my mind to reading more fiction! ... show more

  • Engaging, mind-tickling trip with well-drawn characters, tight plotting, & alluring possibilities make for a fun armchair vacay!
Format: Kindle
When Lynne McBrier acquires a vintage camping trailer, she can’t imagine that her camping trips will be journeys not just to new places, but to former times. Struggling to raise rebellious teen-aged daughter Dinah after separating from her husband Kurt, Lynne buys the 1937 camper on impulse from her old friend Ben, who used it to take trips with his now deceased wife, Minnie. Dinah, who like most adolescent girls considers anything her mother wants her to do as boring, agrees reluctantly to go on one sentimental weekend camping trip before Lynne converts the trailer into an office. It’s pretty cozy as Lynne and Dinah settle into a local campground and tuck in for the night. But when they wake up, things around them have changed—there are no big trees, no paved roads, and the large cement bathhouse is gone, in its place, two wooden outhouses. They are forced to realize that, impossible as it seems, the trailer has transported them back in time; people talk to them about their fear of Russian spies, and everyone is dressed in outmoded costumes. Certain clues to the transformation allow them to reverse the process and return to 2014. They agree not to talk about their misadventure. But Lynne secretly takes a time trip on her own and Dinah wants visit the past once more, having become obsessed with classic books about time travel. Each jump lands them in a different portion of the twentieth century. Lynne tries to get the truth about the trailer from Ben, but he is in hospital, raving incomprehensibly about Minnie. Then Lynne and Kurt are forced together to test the mysteries of time travel when Dinah goes missing, almost certainly carried away by the camper. Author Karen Musser Nortman has cleverly constructed this fantasy with many small but important particulars. Mother and daughter, whose testy relationship is realistically portrayed, visit a vintage store to get mid-century clothes and add an old-fashioned radio and other details to the camper so they’ll seem plausible to people they encounter in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Reminders of historical events—teen hobos in the Great Depression, Roger Bannister’s four-minute mile, the McCarthy hearings—contribute authenticity to the story, while touches like the strong family similarity in appearance and rebellious temperament between Dinah and her then teen-aged ancestor add poignancy. Well-drawn characters, tight plotting and the alluring possibility of returning to, and possibly changing, the past make "The Time Travel Trailer" an engaging, mind-tickling trip and a fun read for an arm-chair vacation. ... show more

  • Light and enjoyable time-travel fantasy
Format: Kindle
Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a lighthearted fluffy read, something that doesn't take a lot of brainpower to enjoy. "The Time Travel Trailer" is just such a book -- not a lot of substance, but still an entertaining, funny, and cute read. The time periods aren't always portrayed exactly faithfully, and some of the plot twists feel a bit contrived and unrealistic, but for the most part it's a light and enjoyable book that even non-sci-fi lovers will enjoy. Lynne is trying to find a way to reconnect with her teenage daughter, Dinah, in the wake of her separation from her husband... so when she buys a vintage camper trailer, she hopes that a camping trip with Dinah will do the trick. But after spending a night in the trailer, Lynne and Dinah find themselves transported back to the 1960s! The trailer apparently has the ability to slip back in time whenever someone spends the night in it, its time period always fitting whenever the latest renovation was done to its interior. As Lynne works on restoring the trailer to its original condition, she and Dinah are able to visit other decades... but when Dinah decides to use the trailer to get back at her mother in an act of teenage rebellion, it lands her in a world of trouble... The writing in this fic isn't the best, but it flows well and serves nicely to tell this kind of story. The author has obviously done their research on the various time periods on display, though occasionally the slang feels either forced or wrong for the time period. And some of the plot twists feel a bit contrived, or forced for drama's sake. Still, it's entertaining and fun, and I never felt completely jarred out of the time period as I read. Lynne is pretty much an everywoman, without a lot of established personality but still with a relatable drive to identify with her daughter and juggle her responsibilities as a mother, wife, and working woman with the mystery of the trailer. Her daughter, Dinah, is a brat, and while I understand that she's fourteen and most fourteen-year-olds are a bit rebellious and defiant, it feels like that's all there is to Dinah's character. Other characters are enjoyable, if somewhat flat, though I do appreciate that while Lynne and her husband, Kurt, are said to be having difficulties in their marriage, the plot doesn't vilify him to an absurd degree. "The Time Travel Trailer" is nothing groundbreaking, but it's still an enjoyable time-travel story with a fun twist. If you enjoy time-travel stories or just want something relatively lighthearted, this is a good option. Sometimes you just want a bit of brain candy, something fluffy to enjoy between heavier reads. ... show more

  • Time travel for a weekend armchair
Format: Kindle
Time travel is great! I love the conundrum of it all. The Time Travel Trailer (TTTT) is a fun look about time travel without all the confusing science. In fact, there is no good explanation about how it works with this trailer. Other than sleep, remodeling, and jewelry we don't know HOW. But then, does anybody know HOW? TTTT is a fast fun novel. Though I must admit that it could probably be told just as well in a short story. There are a few things that needed more exploration: How did Minnie and Ben meet? How did Minnie get back? How could Ben and Minnie sit on the porch swing but nobody noticed he was married? Did Lynne and Kurt get the counseling? How could the trailer be in 2014 AND 1962? There were others, but since I wasn't taking notes I don't remember. That is not to say the writing was bad, it was quite good. For me, the fact that as a movie it would be rated PG14 is another reason that I enjoyed it so much. I get so tired of trying to skip those four letter words in most books. Four stars instead of five because the first 2/3 of the book is basically the introduction. We don't get down to the 'real meat' of the story fast enough. The only character we really get to know is Dinah. The fact that she is 14 and a girl tells enough to get a good start on her behavior and moods. With the voice changing to third person for Dinah, we get to know more about her thinking process which helps us get to know her. However, Mom and Daddy we don't know much about. We know their situation (work and separation) but we don't get to know them. I truly enjoyed TTTT and can't wait for Ms Nortman's sequel. ... show more

  • The Time Travel Trailer
Format: Kindle
I love time travel books but this one was different and very interesting. I loved how they went to different decades and finally got back to 1937. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

  • A fun little story of time travel and family
Format: Kindle
~H.G. Wells had a Victorian time machine. Doc Brown had a DeLorean. Lynne McBrier, well, she has a used 1937 travel trailer…works for me! ~I liked this one because the time travel was not planned. It happened and was a major surprise for mom and daughter. There were some family issues that came up…and the author dealt with them realistically. ~There were no time traveling super villains that had to be fought and overpowered to save humanity…however, there were some bad people. No spoilers, let’s just say it all worked out. ~I like it! It was good escapism reading…made for an enjoyable story. If you like down to earth main characters, sci-fi, problems that can be solved without blowing something up, and a story with a good plot including some twists and turns…this one is worth looking into. ~Excuse me, I need to look at the newspaper ads…I’m interested in a used trailer! ... show more
