  • So Much Fun!
Format: Kindle
Imagine a cruise where the passengers aren’t just humans but a host of magical creatures, and in the midst of luxurious dinners and sun-soaked decks, a murder mystery unravels. This book captivates from the first page, blending elements of intrigue, fantasy, and a slow-burn romance into an intense narrative that keeps you hooked. At the heart of it all is the main character—funny, endearing, and impossibly brave. Their charm is infectious, bringing warmth and humor to even the darkest corners of the mystery. With a sharp wit and a tendency to leap into danger, this protagonist feels like a trusted friend you're cheering for from the very beginning. They face challenges head-on, navigating not only the complexities of a magical murder investigation but also an unexpected romance that simmers in the background, adding layers of tension and heart to the plot. The murder mystery is brilliantly paced, with clues that keep you guessing and a diverse ensemble of magical beings that add intrigue to every twist. Each character feels rich and contributes to the high-stakes atmosphere on the ship. The romance subplot is especially noteworthy—an electric chemistry between the protagonist and their love interest that blossoms gradually but intensely, leading to moments of both tenderness and longing. Overall, this book is an irresistible blend of humor, mystery, and magic, set against the backdrop of an enchanting cruise. If you're a fan of stories that make you laugh, keep you on the edge of your seat, and leave you with a full heart, this one is a must-read. ... show more

  • Murder Mystery Meets Magical Fantasy
Format: Kindle
The Voyage of the Damned is a delightful romp filled with humor and adventure! The main character’s sassy and self-deprecating charm makes him incredibly likable, and his quick wit keeps things entertaining. My favorite has to be Grasshopper, the adorable 6-year-old with a loyalty that melts your heart. Set during a 12-day voyage that is a pilgrimage for the "Blessed" rulers of the provinces of Concordia. This story is packed with unique characters and a mystery that keeps you guessing. That said, the pacing can feel a bit sluggish at times, especially early on, but once you hit the 70% mark, the excitement kicks in! Overall, I’d give it 3.5 stars—great characters and a fun plot, just a little slow on the uptake! ... show more

  • Phenomenal
Format: Hardcover
My favorite book of recent years. It's both funny and addictive. While it's a genre blend, I think it'll serve mystery readers better than fantasy readers. But the world building is still enticing in my opinion. Also as someone who doesn't care much for sprayed edges, the ones for this book are gorgeous! ... show more

  • Wanted to love this pretty book...
Format: Hardcover
..but it was just OK. Fantasy x mystery set at sea - I love all that and expected to love this. Started off well, but as I was reading, had to keep referring to the cast of characters to keep them all straight. The main character started out as a snarky underdog, but becomes less and less likable, and even worse, proves himself not very clever at figuring things out. Really didn't like the latter half of the book. World-building was thin, characters two dimensional. ... show more

  • A good book from a new author
Format: Kindle
12 different provinces in a country represented by 12 different animals. Each area has a “Blessed” - must be legitimate and the Blessing is passed down from parent to child and usually manifested when the child is in single digits. All except the Imperial heir, the leader, where the Blessing is passed down upon the death of the Blessed who is responsible for fueling and keeping in tact the “Bandage” - a belt of land that keeps out the Crabs. The Crabs allowed a bastard be Blessed and it all went badly. Now they are shunned and outlawed. Now the 11 newly Blessed and the heir are on The Dragon’s Dawn, the Imperial’s ship taking them to the Goddess’s mountain to give thanks for her bestowing of Blessings. Except Ganymedes of the Fish Province, commonly known as Dee, has been lying about his Blessing - he doesn’t have one - his father has numerous bastards and he doesn’t want to become another Crab Provincetown and outlawed so he convinced Dee of lie. Now on a ship with 11 other people and Imperial servants someone, another Blessed, is killing the Blesseds one by one and Dee has made it his mission to find out who before they find out his secret. ... show more

  • ARC Review
Format: Hardcover
Firstly, I'd like to thank the publisher for the eARC Netgalley of this book. I LOVED THIS!!! Let's just say that if you mixed an Agatha Christie type murder cruise but made the characters magical, diverse, queer and sassy, you'd get this book! I personally found the voice of the narrator hilarious but also very relatable at times. We get to see inside a character who, to the world, appears to not care about anything, but to his core is hurting pretty deeply inside. I really enjoyed how we got to get an inside look into many of the characters during the investigations. The magic/fantasy aspect of the book was very unique to me as well. I kept finding myself trying to guess what kind of world this takes place in, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it, however it kept me intrigued throughout. There were a few instances where I thought the timing/setting was a bit iffy (i.e. poutine and "walking away from an explosion" mentions). Regardless of any of my concerns, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would honestly love more on Ganymedes! ... show more

  • A fantasy murder mystery
Format: Kindle
I definitely didn’t see the ending to this book coming, and I count that as a win! Ganymedes is definitely my favorite character from this besides Grasshopper, and I love seeing all the character growth that he went through! He deserved everything, and I’m glad that he was able to survive everything! So. If you love murder mystery books with a hint of fantasy, this book is for you!^^ ... show more

  • My favorite book this year
Format: Paperback
No spoilers: Probably my favorite book I've read this year! I laughed out loud many times. I LOVE the main character. So much humor but depth as well. The mystery is fun to piece together and solve. The solution made sense and isn't frustrating. The characters are believable with their character growth as well. After reading it once, I want to read it again knowing the ending. I do have a few concerns with the world building, but those were easily ignored because I had so much fun going along with the main character. ... show more
