  • So Many Emotions
Format: Kindle
I don’t even know where to start with this one. I guess I’ll say, this book surprised me overall, as I didn’t read the synopsis and just dove right in. Though I sometimes struggled to continue reading due to utter frustration and annoyance, I’m glad I finally pushed through and allowed the characters and plot to develop. Devante PISSED ME OFF so bad. I was so annoyed and mad with him and his antics. He was a major part of me having difficulty getting through initially. Reading what he was doing to those young, eager, bright, and beautiful young ladies was just so maddening. I have never been this pissed off and angry with a book character before. I’m glad he finally went away but, I wish he’d been held accountable in the end. Vanessa- Though I was suspicions of her and Devonte’s true relationship and intent throughout the book, I was totally taken aback when their actual relationship was revealed and everything they’d being doing for so many years. At Vanessa’s big age, she should’ve never been involved and dealing with these young ladies. But the actual connection and her importance in the story was revealed and ended up making sense. The author constantly alluded to there being something in the FMC’s past and her identity that was an integral part of the story. Loren and Kammy. Poor girls. My heart broke for them as their light, life, and purpose was stolen from them due to their gullibility and naivety. It’s all too familiar of things that can occur to young students first away at college. I wish Kammy had been found. I also wished that Loren had been able to truly and fully come back from this. Nick was such a delight and I had a feeling he’d be a significant part of bringing the storyline to life when he was first introduced. I was a little annoyed that the token white boy was appearing as the “savior” for the destitute Black girl. I’m glad he was there and he seemed like he was genuine and authentic in his intentions of attending the HBCU and his clear love for Jordyn. His upbringing was a great contribution to his overall character. He was raised by a Black Aunty and it showed. Jordyn. She is a very complex young lady. At times, her decision making was very questionable and I continued to write it off as her being a young lady looking for community and belonging. The author continuously dropped hints that her past was a factor in everything happening. Her constant reflections about Kevin and alluding to no one knowing the real her, added to the mystery surrounding her character and actions. I would’ve never guessed the way it all came out and her true motives. This girl is a force to be reckoned with and clearly didn’t play about her brother. I love her for real! In all, I truly enjoyed this book. I’m glad I pushed through. This is my second read of this author’s work and I see she likes to take you on a deeply emotional ride, while dropping subtle hints of major plot lines throughout the book. She then completely blindsides you with a suspenseful twist that has you questioning and trying to decide if the FMC is a villain or not. Jordyn was complex and, even after her intentions and actions were revealed, I couldn’t help but to still love her character. Overall, this was a solid read and I’ve become a true fan of this author’s work. I now know that I need to be emotionally prepared for new novels as they truly take you through it. Great job! ... show more

  • Wild and crazy
Format: Hardcover
I don't know how The Scammer got onto my radar, but what a trip! It was crazy, unexpected, twisted goodness! Right out of the gate, we meet Jordyn. She has gone against her parents' wishes and dropped the opportunity to attend an Ivy League University to attend an HBCU. She comes from a successful Black family, but they seem to follow the guidelines of success from the white world. Jordyn is looking for more and to start over. While not having her parents support, she immediately is brought in with her wonderful roommates and they click, forming a sort of sisterhood. What Jordyn has always wanted. If only her brother could see her now. But soon, one of her roommates brother's comes to stay with them and he turns their lives upside down. And what transpires is crazy! Well, dang! This book brought me in immediately! I went into it blindly and had no idea what to expect. The fact that it seemed to surround itself in a cult world kept me 100% intrigued, frustrated yet turning those pages to see how it would all be dealt with. I loved following our protagonist, Jordyn and to feel her awkwardness and how she was trying to navigate all new things. I had a love/hate relationship with most of the other characters, especially her roommates who I initially loved. But I really despised Devonte at every turn. And then there is Nick, the lone white boy at an HBCU that seems to be Jordyn's saving grace. Only those 2 both had some kind of weird connection, even when they didn't want to. All I have to say is this was Wild and Crazy! Unexpected and so good. Characters that made me feel all sorts of ways and kept me glued to the pages from the beginning to the very end. And How this all came together….say what?! This was some crazy college cult stuff with one great twist at the end. ... show more

  • Not sure how I feel
Format: Kindle
I'm torn between really liking this book. The writing was good because I was drawn into the story and didn't want to put it down but the plot shifting to it being a planned setup is weird. The switching of the pills and the whole line about the ex boyfriend knowing the plan just seems too far fetched. What truth does she have to reveal to Nick, that she knew who Vanessa was? I have so many questions and the book left me so confused that I can't say I enjoyed it. I definitely didn't enjoy the ending. Maybe it was written for a part two because part one didn't make any sense. ... show more

Format: Kindle
🛑SPOLIERS🛑 ⭐️: 4.25/5 Guys I lie to you not, I finished this book within 24 hours. I do not regret a thing. One thing about Tiffany D. Jacksons books that I love is she know how long to make her books. She doesn't try to extend them or make the plot repetitive. But I can say for this book it could have at least been an extra 50 pages. I have said this multiple times. I dont think Jackson knows how to end books. Everything seems so rushed and ends with unanswered questions. At the end of this book I have alot of questions. Like how did Devonte escape and will he ever be found. Also, where is Kammy and Legacy? We're they removed because they knew the truth of trying to escape. Also, what happened to the followers that were manipulated like Loren. Did they return home or stay on campus? I enjoyed the book very much but it could have continued. But this book was great and I didnt expect anything less. Jordyn almost had me a few times. I genuinely thought she was this naive 18 year old who went to a city school and was being manipulated. She almost was and she stood true which I was happy about. I liked that the book explored predators on both sides of the spectrum. You have those out against our community just because of the color of our skin but then you have those within our community and capitalizing off of our issues and look like us. You have Black "actvist" who can care less about Black issues and just see catering to it as a cash cow. I see it on the daily basis with people earning millions to put into there pocket instead of our communities. Its annoying but I respected Jordyn sticking to her agenda to get justice for her brother. Also, her parents I tell you all skin folk ain't kin folk and like Jordyn said you can dress up and accumulate as much money as you can but you will still never be the same in there eyes. I have people in my family that think White communities equal safety which is annoying. Jordyn parents literally were not supportive and couldn't see through there own prejudice against there own people. There was so much go on with side characters like Nick. I didnt trust him at first but I did grow to like him. He was cool but I wish we could have seen a little bit of his background but him being a rich White kid with a Black nanny was not what I expected but wasnt surprised by specifically with the way he spoke at times. Man I still have more I want to read from this book and I hope Vanessa and others who let she Devonte get away with scamming rot in prison. At first I was triggered with the religious aspect but then it became apparent what was going on. I just hope Jordyn can go on finding herself while avenging her brother. But I definitely recommend this book. I could not put it down. Another 4 star for Jackson, baby! ... show more

  • Great story
Format: Kindle
What a story! Just when everything seemed beautiful at the start, it turned into a torment in an instant, unintentionally and without anyone even noticing. I should add that I tried to put myself in Jordyn’s shoes many times to understand her perspective or perhaps her immaturity, because I was already struggling to make sense of her actions. And just when I thought things wouldn’t escalate any further, the story took a tremendous turn that left me speechless. ... show more

  • A good suspenseful read 😎
Format: Hardcover
This book was highly anticipated on my shelf and it was a quick read at work. It was shocking, quirky , crazy and funny all combined. What a plot twist at the end that I wasn’t expecting and I kinda wish we got hinted into closer but hey I like surprises either way. For a standalone it’s solid but I hate being left with questions unanswered and it’s up to my brain to put something together to satisfy it. I wanted better closure for all characters stories but I see how it can make or break a book so that’s the only reason it’s not fully 5 stars for me but still a great book and I think everyone should read it. ... show more
