Description

He puts his hand against my chest. "It's still beating," he whispers, his words a soft kiss against my lips. "As long as it's beating, you're okay."When Cora Lawson attends her sister's birthday party, she expects at most a hangover or a walk of shame by the end of it. She doesn't anticipate a stolen wallet, leaving her stranded and dependent on her sister's fiancé, Dean Asher―her archnemesis and perpetual thorn in her side. And she really doesn't anticipate getting knocked out and waking up chained in a madman's basement, Dean in his own shackles beside her. After fifteen years of teasing, insults, and never-ending pranks, the ultimate joke seems to be on them. The two people who always thought they'd end up killing each other must now work together if they want to survive long enough to escape. But Cora and Dean don't know that their abductor has a plan for them. A plan that will alter the course of their relationship, blur the line between hate and love, and shackle them to each other long after they are freed from their chains. They're in this together―no matter what their unexpected bond might cost them. Read more

  • Amazing book
Such a good book! It's so captivating and easy to read. I love that the intensity of the book started right away. I really liked that some of the rougher scenes of the book were so descriptive and intense as other darker books I've read. Everything was worded so good. The love story and beautiful things said had me crying multiple times throughout the book. Definitely recommend. ... show more

  • Traumatizing, but well worth it!
Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ This book is full of trauma and heartbreak. I felt like I was on a roller coaster of emotions, praying our FMC and MMC come out the other side. Once they do, it seems it’s one obstacle after the other after life changing trauma. But, you feel the love that had obviously been budding from way before the incident, even though much of the time they acted as though they hated each other and the ending is well deserved. It is well written and the story is heart wrenching, like so many books by Jennifer Hartmann. This is a dark psychological thriller romance and is not for the faint at heart. There is non-consent, dark matters of a serial killer, kidnapping and so much more, so if you have triggers, check them. But, if not, read it, you will be on the edge of your seat! ... show more

  • Captivating from beginning to end!
I have to say this book was hard to put down.... with every page and chapter it keeps you hooked and reeled in, making you want to keep reading more... The only thing I could have done without was how detailed the "spicy" scenes were and how much cussing was involved, but other than that, the story line was awesome and beautifully written! I love the story line and how Dean and Cora fought so hard and hung on to each other, never giving up on the other and I loved watching their love blossom into how it ended. This story does stick with you, it's that good! You can literally feel the emotion, and chemistry between them from beginning to end. I'm just glad they end up living happily ever after in the end together after all they went through and conquered together. ... show more

  • Beautifully vulnerable
Such a beautifully written book, it has such raw elements in it that will make you laugh, cry, rage and mourn for these characters. Jennifer writes about such hard topics but it's real amd powerful. Horrendous pain, but incredible healing as well; a full circle. What an incredible story, strong characters, and amazing message of hope and love. ... show more

  • from enemies to unexpected allies
I’ll never forget this book. Still Beating is one of the most emotional and intense love stories I’ve ever read. It’s dark, heartbreaking, and beautiful all at once. Cora and Dean were enemies for years. But one night, after a terrible twist of fate, they’re kidnapped and locked in a basement together. What starts as hate turns into something much deeper as they fight to survive. Their bond grows in the darkest place imaginable. Even after they escape, the story doesn’t get easier. The pain, guilt, and trauma follow them. Dean was Cora’s sister’s fiancé. Their love isn’t simple; it’s messy, forbidden, and full of emotion. But it’s real. This book isn’t just about surviving horrible things. It’s about healing, finding love after pain, and learning to live again. Jennifer Hartmann writes with so much heart and honesty, it’s impossible not to feel every word. Some parts are hard to read. But the way Cora and Dean hold on to each other makes it worth it. They’re broken, but they still find something beautiful together. This isn’t a light romance. It’s heavy, but it’s full of hope. And the ending will stay with me forever. Trigger Warnings: Kidnapping, sexual assault, PTSD, suicide, animal abuse ... show more

  • heavy topics. please check triggers
4.5 stars! Beautifully written trauma bonding. But please please please read trigger warnings, this book has a lot of graphic content. And while some scenes do not go into detail, if this triggering there may be parts you need to skip. But in doing so it does take away from the overall story, But overall this was a beautiful book. Jennifer Hartmann put so much beauty into her writing here. The MMC&FMC are always pranking each other and playing around, which instantly makes you think about their connection. The FMC has too much to drink one night and calls the MMC for a ride. They both wake up locked up by a serial killer. They start to bond and be each other’s saving grace through this time. While I loved the mental health aspect and how he was so willing to help her overcome everything she had been through, I really felt like we could have made the sister’s relationship shorter. I know this is trauma and they fell in love in it and that’s truly beautiful and how it was handled was beautiful. It was a good read, but it just seemed like everyone knew these two held feelings and the sister was blindsided and left by her fiancé, even though it was a comfortable love and not the way he loves the FMC, we just tossed a 15 year relationship. So that part I felt could have been tweaked in my opinion. But overall a good read, if you can handle heavy topics I do recommend this book. SPOILER AHEAD: I did love the epilogue and getting to see these characters in the future and knowing they overcome it all and have a family. I love seeing they are truly in love and not just a comforting love. I also loved getting to see the sister was able to find her true love as well. ... show more
