  • Amazingly Well Done
This is not a movie to watch for pure entertainment, like a Marvel film. It's not funny. It's not light. It's not for kids. This is a bald look at the poor treatment women receive at the hands of men. And the fact that the men are oblivious to it, of how malevolent and flat out wrong it is. And how it never crosses their minds that they're not entitled to behave in that manner. Overall, a lot of the time, I found that while watching I felt the same way I feel if I'm walking down a street with a strange man following me: very, very uneasy. I wouldn't say this is suspense in the classic Rear Window way, but more an artifact produced by skillful film-making. By really, really good acting--microexpressions are often better than any other form of acting. I recommend this movie. Maybe not for date night? As a plus, it's an Australian film, and simply interesting (at least to me, an American) for its same-but-different culture portrayal. ... show more

  • At What Point Do You Admit That This Isn't Ok? - 3.5 Stars
I really enjoyed this movie. I actually would give it 3.5 stars but want to manage expectations. It's honestly not quite 4 but better than a 3. I am a huge fan of movies like this. I would kind of describe this as a drama with thriller elements or more of an arthouse thriller/horror. It's a very quiet, slower-paced film (except when its not), and I don't think its plot-driven so much as character and situation-driven if that makes any sense. This is about 2 young 20-something young American women, friends, who are living a nomadic lifestyle for the moment and traveling. They end up in Australia but run out of money. They decide to take on work at this gawd-forsaken old hotel/bar situation in the middle of the outback. The one character, Hanna (Julia Garner) has some apprehension but away they go. Yep its in the middle of nowhere, and its rough. Creepy, nasty and odd hijinks abound. I really like how this movie brings the discomfort and trepidation and kind of "what would YOU do?" sort of feeling and discussion. To me, it kind of investigates the line between "Hey this is an authentic and uncomfortable experience" and "Ok we are in DANGER and this could go very very badly." We are socially trained to discount our gut, often for the sake of social conformity, often right up until the moment its too late. At what point do you realize that no, this isn't cute anymore, this is dangerous, and what do you do about it? At what point does something become just "rough and scary" and start being life-threatening? There are a few movies like this that I feel ask this question in different ways and I really enjoy that exploration. This works powerfully as a film seen through female eyes yes but also simply through human ones too. Heck anyone who's ever been told, "You need to chill out! Everything's going to be fine" - while abroad especially - can relate. The leads here were quite good, Garner already mentioned I think is the standout, and for me in more ways that one. She obviously has an absolutely striking look. I think I've seen the actress on a fashion or perfume advertisement or something and I have to say she's a great choice. But beyond that her character was most relatable to me - the cautious person who wants to have an experience but is not-so-down-for -anything-goes. She goes back and forth between being open and accepting and clearly being Noped out by a lot of things. She is the more grounded, cautious one. The other character Liv (Jessica Henwick) is also beautiful and does a great job, but I have to say her character got to a point that irked me. Her character is the more, "caution-to-the-wind/let's-just-roll -with -it -because -this -is what- living's- about" type. But again, there needs to be a point... Yes, the world absolutely needs to be safer for women. And we're working on that. In a perfect world, we can let our guard down completely and all get home alive. But this world ain't perfect, and we need to be careful, unfortunately. And hey if you've been there you've been there, when you're 20 and you have a girl friend of yours who seems to be determined to end up on a milk carton due to some VERY terrible, sloppy decisions, leaving you to always have to the protector. Yes I can very much relate to this dynamic. Though I enjoyed this film, it left some things to be desired though. There obviously was some sort of background to the girls' story, and I don't think we ever got the whole story? I really wanted more info, as it would've explained more. Also, as many will point out, yeah, it's kind of a slow boiler, it takes its time. And I don't know if a lot of people will be satisfied with the journey. And I do kind of get that. I did want more too. But hey I really enjoyed this, it made me think during and after and I thought it was time well spent. I definitely recommend it if you like more artsy, slooower, non-traditionally paced out darker films. ... show more

  • Movie rental night
Good actress . See the Ozarks. Good storyline overall . Worth renting. The only thing is , the movie builds up to what a viewer would then probably expect A big explosive climax ending , but unfortunately we’re left kinda scratching our heads instead . Think if it like you’ve lit all these cool smaller fireworks the when it’s time for that big Roman candle to shoot out in a glory of sky- filled sparks and colorful mushroom , but instead the viewer gets a …. Well nevermind , Anyway, it’s still a good movie and worth renting. ... show more

  • Self indulgent tripe
You cannot help think that the director feels she is delivering some soulful messaging on toxic masculinity. Instead she delivers a nonsensical, episodic mess from a troupe of undeveloped losers. If you are going to center a movie on drunkenness, alcoholism and bar culture try and have some small handle on the topics. As a once raging alcoholic I understand how binge drinking works and girlfriend it’s not this weak pee. Watch the excellent Hotel Coolegardie documentary instead - the wasted basis for this flusher. ... show more

  • Falls Short of Expectations
This movie has an intriguing concept, but unfortunately, it failed to deliver on the potential. The pacing was sluggish, and the storyline lacked depth, making it difficult to stay engaged. The characters were not fleshed out enough to connect with, and the plot felt overly predictable. I expected more, but overall, it left me disappointed. Wouldn’t recommend spending your time on it unless you’re particularly interested in the genre. ... show more

  • Love the actresses
Saw the documentary and saw the movie and loved them both. Hats off to the real girls who survived such utter disrespect and objectifying behavior from a lot of very u savory men. Hats off to 2 lead actresses that are super talented and never disappoint. Creepy movie but I loved it.

  • Just ok
The cast was decent but the story wasn't that believable and the plot line kind of dragged.
