Description

With this sublimely stirring fable of desire and creativity, Jane Campion became the first woman to win a Palme d’Or at Cannes. Holly Hunter is achingly eloquent through silence in her Academy Award–winning performance as Ada, an electively mute Scottish woman who expresses her innermost feelings through her beloved piano. When an arranged marriage brings Ada and her spirited daughter (Anna Paquin, in her Oscar-winning debut) to the wilderness of nineteenth-century New Zealand, she finds herself locked in a battle of wills with both her ineffectual husband (Sam Neill) and a rugged frontiersman (Harvey Keitel) to whom she develops a forbidden attraction. With its sensuously moody cinematography, dramatic coastal landscapes, and sweeping score, this uniquely timeless evocation of a woman’s inner awakening is an intoxicating sensory experience that burns with the twin fires of music and erotic passion. • A poetic and haunting masterpiece
I saw “The Piano” when it was first released and I absolutely loved it. I recommended it to all my friends and when I took my boyfriend (now husband) to see it, I was surprised that he did not like it and it was all I could do to keep him from storming out after THAT scene (if you’ve seen it, you know the one). It was then that I learned that some films can be polarizing and tastes differ. I still think the film is a masterpiece. I haven’t seen it in over a decade and I was excited to hear that it was getting the Criterion treatment. Although the 4K disc would not play for me, the Blu-ray disc looks spectacular and I appreciated the beauty of the film even more, especially the cinematography. There is so much to admire about the film and I won’t rehash the plot. In addition to the exquisite cinematography, score and storyline, the acting is a stand-out attraction. Holly Hunter is a revelation (in the commentary, director Jane Campion and producer Jan Chapman admit that she was aggressive in her efforts to win the role and that they first did not consider her seriously because they felt she was not physically right for the part). Hunter (playing a mute character) expresses so much with her stern and penetrating eyes as well as her graceful sign language. Sam Neill and Harvey Keitel are both strong as acquaintances who are polar opposites. As the daughter, Anna Paquin gives an amazing performance for a child actor. She actually has the bulk of the dialogue and is enchanting, whether dancing across the screen in angel wings or telling elaborate fibs in rapid-fire delivery. She provides a bit of comic relief (much needed) and also is the catalyst for the shocking outcome. As expected, there are many extras. A full-length commentary by Jane Campion and Jan Chapman, interviews with Hunter, Keitel and Neill as well as composer Michael Nyman, costume designer Janet Patterson, production designer Andrew McAlpine, Maori advisor Waihoroi Shortland, the short film “The Water Diary” (2006), several featurettes and more. ... show more

  • This is probably my favorite film ever. So unique and outstanding in every way.
I had it on DVD but bought this for the commentary and other special features, as well as the Blu-ray quality. I've already watched it three times.

  • Great restoration
Jane Campion's masterpiece has now been given the 4K restoration treatment it really deserved. The result of that restoration is very highly recommended by me!
